There it was, the main building⌠right there, so why didnât he move from his current spot? It was like his feet became part of the concrete step as he looked up mouth slightly agape, the wind blew lightly which woke him up out of his moment of blank nervousness. A sigh left his lips as he looked about towards the rest of the packed quad, a collective of smiling and teary eyed faces. Concentration etched his soft features whilst he clutched onto his cardboard box of oddities.
âIâve circled this damn place 3 times already and Iâve checked the directions, what is this building invisible or something, though that would be cool.â He thought to himself all the while not looking where he was going⌠âYAH! Jesus watch â oh Iâve never seen you around before, you lost?â The voice seemed pissed off at first and then softer once realising the situation, Tae looked up to see where  the voice came from a paler looking guy staring right at him, the paler boy had fluffy pistachio green hair and almond shaped eyes, even though he had a hard demeanour  he actually looked quite easy going to Tae.
Tae nods at the stranger and opens his mouth to speak but as always mouth before mind: âHe kinda looks like the ice creamâ he quickly covers his mouth and starts giggling, luckily the hard faced stranger didnât hear him so he clears his throat to re-word his sentence; âHi, Iâm Kim Taehyung, Tae for short and yes Iâm very lost could you please help me?â To the mint haired boy Tae looked exhausted and quite nervous as he looked at him while sipping his iced coffee; he nods nonchalantly before kind of grunting and gesturing to his paper.
âAha! Room 113? Youâre Jin hyungâs new roommate, follow me, kid.â Tae reveals his (award winning, show stopping!) boxy grin, followed by a giggle at how he has finally found his room and roommate.
The two boys find themselves walking down a straight corridor and around a right turn then to room 113, on the front of the door is written KIM SEOKJIN in big block letters just below the number. âSeokjin⌠My new roommate?â Yoongi nods at him as he sees Taehyungâs face turn into a grin.
Tae set down his box and looked around his new place of residence taking in all the Mario merch and plushies whilst Yoongi sat down on a swivel chair, his phone in hand.âThank you for showing me where my room is, I was about to give up, you practically saved me so much headache. Oh yeah! Whatâs your name you know mine but what about yours because letâs face it that woul-ââ Tae says this without taking a breath as his energy has gone from 0 to 100 very quickly? Â
âShut up for a second! Iâm Yoongi, but my friends call me Suga. Damn, you talk a lot huh?â Yoongi shakes his head as calmness washes over his inviting features.  âYeah, sorry I get too excited⌠I tend to do that a lot, you see I donât talk to people a lot. I come from the countryside, well my familyâs farm to be exact so Iâm nervous and hyper⌠Sorry.â
At that moment Yoongi now understood why this kid went from mute to puppy in 0.03 seconds, he saw his past self in Taehyung the shy aspect especially and it made him pity the younger boy a little bit.
âHey, Tae seeing as you have yet to make friends and whatever, do you wanna hang out with me and some of my bros? Plus youâll get to meet your roommate.â He doesnât make eye contact with the wide eyed country boy as he says this with a monotone but soothing voice making the offer more homely. Â
At that second Tae slowly stops taking his belongings out of their box, his face lit up like a tree at Christmas time at the friendly gesture.
âYes! Thanks for the invite butâŚâ The boyâs full smile slowly started to fade away as reality started to throw painful jabs at Taeâs heart. ââŚIâll have to see, ok⌠how about I text you if Iâm not too busy sorting things out here?â Yoongi nods understanding his situation and proceeds to give his number to Tae; after this Yoongi takes his leave mentioning something about music class. The room seems empty now.
Tae perches on the windowsill and he starts to feel nervous again just then his phone chimes the theme to Overwatch. Â âWho is it now? I thought I put this thing on silentâ He thinks to himself eyebrowsâ furrowed a bit baffled at the device. He answers voice slightly shaky as he clears his throat.
âHey, eomma!â He plastered a fake smile on his face to hide what he was pondering about just minutes before the call. His mother smiling at the sight of her sonâs beaming face.
âHello, Tae! How are you finding it? Are you settling in well? What classes do you have? Have you made any friends yet?â
There it was that dreaded, burning question⌠âHave you made any friends yet?â Taehyung gulps and blinks a couple times before answering the bombardment of questions; he brushes back his tousled hair nervously. âWellll, itâs ok I havenât met my roommate yet and I did meet one guy named Yoongi heâs quite cool actually he also invited me out to meet his other friends but⌠honestly eomma, Iâm shy and a little bit scaredâ His motherâs smile disappears and she becomes concerned automatically.
âTaehyung-ah, donât be afraid remember what we said⌠people love others who are themselves so be yourself youâre a lovely boy and have a kind soul so please donât over think this too much I donât want your first memories to be about you worrying.â Tae nods at her words and perks up slightly, what has he got to lose? Itâs his first day and heâs already made one friend so heâs obviously doing something right. Â
âYouâre right eomma; I think I will go later on.â This time his smile was legit and meaningful. âAnd make sure you eat something, I donât want you to become paper thin while youâre at schoolâ. He shakes his head and pouts at his motherâs request. âItâs Uni, not school and I promise Iâll eat well, anyway I have to go, love, you loads, âThey both say their goodbyes as they blow kisses to the screen until itâs blank.
The mid autumn sky was turning into a mix of blues, purples and pinks, a part of the season Tae enjoyed the most due to it looking like a favourite Vincent Van Gogh painting of his. He checked the time on his phone: 5:35 pm he plucks up the courage to message his hyung that he would go with him to meet his friends.
And with that Yoongi met a shivering but excited Taehyung by the campus library; both boys start walking to their destination Tae fizzing with questions stays quiet already learning that his hyung appreciates the silence. âI wonder if theyâll like me, remember confidenceâŚconfidence people like those who are themselvesâ the freckled boy thought to himself whilst fiddling nervously with the lint balls in his jacket pocket.
âTae, youâll be ok⌠I get it youâre a little apprehensive but donât be.â Taehyung was brought out his daze by his elderâs wise and true words, Yoongi was right he shouldnât be nervous or afraid this was a new chapter for him; new scenery and all and taking chances and trying things came with it, himself and his family worked hard to send him to university and heâd be damned if he spent it being too afraid to take chances and meet others.
âAm I that obvious? I mean youâre right Iâm just gonna be myself 100% and I wonât care what others have to say about itâ Yoongi looked at the younger boy whose features had gone from slightly shaken to a smiling state and he couldnât help but smile as well at Taeâs new found confidence, he chuckles before speaking: âThatâs the right attitude now câmon before we both freeze to death.â
The boys walked a few blocks more until they ended up at outside a frat house with the name Kappa Kegga on a plaque above the door, Yoongi went ahead to the door whilst Taehyung stopped and stared at the building in awe⌠this was a frat house, was he about to be a pledge or worse will they make fun of him?! Suddenly, every scene from every movie he saw about frat boys and how they were flooded his mind and his head switched to Worse Case Scenario.
âTaehyung! What the hell? Câmon lets go instead of standing there like a cod fish huh!?â The shook boy nodded at his hyung and rushed inside removing his hat, scarf and jacket, Yoongi did the same. To Taeâs surprise, there wasnât any loud music or rambunctious girls throwing themselves at guys or anyone doing anything stupid and dangerous, instead, it was just rap music in the background whilst 5 other guys were talking and drinking amongst themselves. Very surprising indeed.
âGuys, this is Taehyung heâs new and he isnât from around here so I thought maybe he could hang out with usâ Yoongiâs calm tone made Tae snap back into reality and his surroundings as he cleared his throat to speak up next. âHiâŚEveryone I hope we can all be friends and get along togetherâŚâ he mustered up a shy grin as blush painted his freckled cheeks, instead of an awkward silence Tae was bombarded with bro hugs and pats on his back; afterward four of them left the room to conversate in the kitchen while two others stayed in the spacious living room playing video games.
âHey, Taehyung wanna play video games with us?â A silver haired boy asked with an inviting and warm smile, that reached his eyes, Tae couldnât help but smile back this guy had an infectious but hospitable aura that he couldnât say no to. âIâm Jimin by the way, and this one with his eyes glued to the screen is Jungkook but we call him Kookie for short heâs the baby of the groupâ The purple haired boy had strong but soft features with doe, Bambi like eyes that had a playful glint in them, Tae could tell he was the youngest. Â
âI am NOT a baby! At least I donât get hammered after two beers, Taehyung doesnât listen to himâŚJimin hyung is talking outta his assâ With that the two start a quarrel between themselves Tae ends up giggling at the sight and how childish they are.
âHey Tae, you donât wanna hang out with them, theyâre just as immature as each other, come hang out with us in the kitchenâ A tall, rose red haired guy jokes as he stands against the door frame smiling just enough to see his deep dimples, his tanned skin complimenting his distinctive hair nicely. âIâm stealing the new kid away for a bit, câmonâ Taehyung follows him into the kitchen âIâm Namjoon and this is Jin, Hoseok and you already know Yoongi.â
Taeâs eyes immediately went to Jin, âSo thatâs my roommateâ he thought to himself as he carefully scanned the boy with the bottled blonde hair, Tae tried to guess what subject he might be studying; Â judging from his broad shoulders he looked as if he could pass off as a jock or sportsman maybe.
âHi, sorry I couldnât meet you today at your introduction my class ran lateâ Jinâs round alert eyes met with Taeâs mahogany orbs, âItâs ok I understand how busy it must be with all those responsibilities and prioritiesâ Taeâs expression was warm and understanding just then Namjoon grabs a cup and pours in a bit of soju and gives it to Tae, his delicate features riddled with confusion but he remembered what he told himself earlier on his way there.
An hour later all 7 boys were around the island in the kitchen all laughing, drinking and sharing silly stories with one another, all of them had a light rosy tint to their cheeks signifying theyâve all had a few drinks. âI have the best idea! Why donât we play a game!!?â Hoseok cheered his mouth shaping into a heart shape with a wide grin while finishing his sentence off with a little laugh.
âIf it involves more drinking count me out because most of you guys are already half gone and SOMEONE responsible needs to watch you, plus I have class at 9 am.â Yoongi pipes in, fairly tipsy enough for him to show off his gummy smile anytime one of the boys did something stupid or idiotic.
âAish! Hyung doesnât be such a stick in the mud! SoâŚwhoâs playing?~ â A mischievous air loomed in Hoseokâs voice, Jimin was the first to put up his hand curious as to what this crazy game was, then Jin followed, Kookie, Namjoon and then Tae who in fact was very giggly at this point and quite vocal to the group he became acquainted with, he felt like he fit perfectly with these boys, in the way that he could tell they all looked after each other and that they were like a little a family, in this circumstance of being away from family being close to a group like them⌠it was family despite only just spending a few mere hours together he could feel the love, and the welcoming vibe. Â
Hoseok brushed back his molten orange locks as he began to describe said game âOk so, we all think of a dumb sentenceâŚ*chuckle* and whoever laughs at their sentence has to drink depending on how many people laughed and then take a dare, so for example I say a sentence and 3 people laugh I drink 3 times and someone gives me a dareâ They all nod understanding.
A few minutes later theyâve all written their sentences and the game has been set into motion, âHobi hyung lemme go first! Pleaseeeâ Taeâs hand shot right up a cheeky grin plastered across his face, âOk sure, make it as dumb or funny as possibleâ Kookie and Jimin are already giggling at god knows what. Everyone pipes down and Tae downs the rest of his soju.
âNamjoonie hyung *hic* you⌠from this angleâŚno mistaking it⌠egg.â Jin is going red in the face, literally like he was about to combust, Jimin clasped a hand over his mouth, and Kookie opposite him took a mouthful of grapes to keep from breaking. Namjoon sat straight faced for a while but Hoseok and Yoongi burst into a wheezing fit of laughter and soon after everyone was holding onto their stomachs, Jinâs windshield like laugh setting everyone else off even worse.
âAhhh, ok ok calm down guys. Tae you gotta drink 6 timesâ Kookie said this whilst trying to catch back his breath, the drunk country boy didnât hesitate as he drank 6 times and awaited his dare from another member of the group.
âI dare you to⌠smack Seokjin hyung on the ass with the baseball bat over in the cornerâ this time the dare came from Yoongi who was surprisingly silent until Tae said his sentence.
âHAHAHA! Oh my god! OkâŚâ Tae covered his face and went to grab the bat, Jin shook his head cursing at the rest of his friends for letting this atrocity happen he stood up and awaited his unjust punishment, without thinking about it Taehyung did a little flip trick with the bat and let the end of it land on Jinâs butt with a (not too) loud PAT!
The morning after Taehyung woke up with a hurricane of a headache symptom of a killer hangover, he got up to see Jin in their shared kitchen busying himself with breakfast, if it even was breakfast time all sense of time seemed to had vanished last night when he was hanging out with his new found friends.
âYouâre awake; finally I was beginning to think you really did pass out. Now sit down and eat you need to soak up all that soju and get some energy back.â Just as Tae was about to devour what was in front of him his phone rang, he immediately put his hands to his ears everything seemed 10000 x louder but he answered it anyway.
âEomma, itâs too early. Is everything ok?â He sniffled and ran a hand over his bed head hair. âEarly? Taehyung-ah itâs 1:00 pm, you look exhausted what happened?â Just as she asked that question Taehyungâs thoughts went to his new found friends and how they welcomed him with open arms and a cheery disposition, he felt whilst being there last night that it was something that will be long term he finally knew that he wasnât awkward and mismatched anymore.
âI made some friends.â His smile grew as the words fell from his lips softly. Â

Prompt: after Yoongi fought with Kookie he found out later on that day that he got into an accident.Â
âWhat sick satisfaction are you getting from this? To bear his pain⌠I have never asked you for anything. I donât even come within a foot to places like this, but you pushed it this time. You punished those that have nothing to do with youâŚmeddling in peopleâs lives! I didnât ask to be hurt this way! Itâs pathetic how people beg you for forgiveness and help! When you donât do shit! WHY DO YOU TAKE THINGS FROM ME THAT MATTER THE MOST TO ME DAMN IT!â He didnât even notice the weather that matched up to his mood but on any other day, he wouldâve called bullshit on the clichĂŠ. The ash haired boy couldnât even steady his erratic breathing, at this time all he saw was red and the pure juvenile motivation to fuck shit up. Others would say he was young, stupid and angry but in his defence, he would say that it was none of their fucking business. The light cast a shadow on one side of his face as he looked up and it was as if the Virgin Mary herself was looking down and taking pity on the delinquent like she was asking him why he was so hateful.  Beaten up state which showed up on his pale tell tale skin, a scar painted across his cheekbone, one across the bridge of his nose and on the corner of his pouty pink lips. âI didnât ask to be your mistake or fuck up⌠In your eyes, Iâm a waste of atoms or an outcast and youâve forsaken me of any happiness or a sliver of peace!â He looks down at his bloody, shaky hands his eyes shed tears of which the porcelain-skinned boy was unaware of, his body started to move as his sobs and cries were carried out through the cold stone walls of the enormous hollow church. He let himself crumble in front of the soft forgiving features of the motherly saint. The storm raged on and so did Yoongiâs cries of disdain and hurt, he ended up lying at the altar whispering words of apology and regret hoping that some forsaken soul like his would come in and just save him.
You sat down up in the royal box of the audience, being the daughter of a mafia boss had its perks given you were a âloose canonâ in your familyâs eyes but you had to be in the environment your were raised in.
But tonight you had a chance to forget about all that shit and just focus on the one thing that actually served as a source of therapyâŚmusic, your surroundings consisted of intricate designs on the balconies of the higher tiers, colours of royal reds and golds shine despite of how many years theyâve weathered through.
You looked around before the show started seeing how much history was in one room, just as you were beginning to get more intrigued the lights dimmed down and the conductor walked outâŚwith an air of eleganceâŚhe held himself with complete confidence and grace you could only compare it to that of a dove almost.
He had turned to face the audience with a smile that matched the brightness of the very spotlight that shone on him if not more, his high cheekbones painted a slight hue of pink as he bowed to the audience his jet black hair moved as he did.
You had forgotten for that moment what you had come here for and you were brought back to earth as the first chord was struck he moved with the music, and he wasnât dancing he was simply one with the music each time his hand moved to guide the orchestra the shape of his mouth grew wider almost to the shape of a heart.
Each cresendo and dimenuendo didnât phase you because you too busy looking at the cute conductor, you couldâve sworn you almost got up from your seat. What you couldnât get over was his vibeâŚdespite being so high up you were effected, in the back of your mind your morals were shouting at you for being so sappy and gaullible but right now you didnât give a fuck.
You held your breath.
As each part of the song became more rougher, the conductor became more one with the music with frantic movements but he still managed to keep his cool and calmness which amazed you because he was panting like mad. The song began to slow and come to a close and its like you both took a exhale⌠you fanned yourself with the programme in your hand and you didnât realise it but you were cryingâŚwhy you had no fucking clue.
He had finally turned back around, he heaved in air to try calm himself down his bangs slightly disheveled but that changed when he swept a shakey hand through his locks.
âIâm Jung Hoseok, thank you all for comingâŚmy team and I worked really hard and it means a lot to see so many people come and enjoy my work so thank you.â
You felt like you could hear him talk for an eternity, you silently repeated his name but your morals again screamed at you to wake the fuck up and stop being to sappy. Unfortunately, you didnât choose to listen.
It happened every time Sukuna would nap, his stomach mouth would awaken like another whole entity itself and start talking to you, somehow sensing your presence every time.
Its voice, deeper than Sukunaâs yet still extremely similar, drawled out slowly. âI have always wondered what youâd taste like, woman.â
Your throat bobs nervously. âCanât you taste things from both mouths?â
He hummed ânoâ, lip twitching up into a smirk. âCare to appease my wishes? I can already feel you throbbing on my thigh.â
You shift upon Sukunaâs lap, the man himself still deep in sleep. He remained with his eyelids fluttered closed as you slipped off the silk robe you were wearing and discarded your underwear, slowly shuffling up his abdomen until you were hovering over the stomach mouth.
âDonât leave a starved man waiting,â the stomach growled beneath you, breath touching in between your legs and making your thighs squeeze against either side of his torso.
Hesitantly, you lowered yourself down until the thick tongue pressed flat against your heat, sinking into your slick and licking a long strip fron your hole to your clit. Your nails dig into your husbands skin immediately, lower lip tucked between your teeth to try and quieten your moans.
âAre- are you sure about this?â You ask tentatively, glancing up at Sukuna sleeping soundly.
âMmm,â the mouth hums in pleasure. âVery sure.â
You writhed and moaned atop him, head tipping back in ecstasy, any remaining sensibility leaving your brain the second the long, thick tongue delved into your hole and ate you out as if you were its last meal and it was the sweetest thing it had ever tasted.
Youâd finished twice already when Sukuna grumbled on the bed, hands twitching and eyes flickering, threatening to open and expose you of your current act. The speed at which you pull off his stomach makes the bed shake violently, throwing the discarded robe over your naked body as quickly as possible.
Itâs your erratic movements that causes your husband to fully wake, slipping from unconsciousness and blindly reaching for you. You settle down next to him casually. âIâm here, Ryo.â
âHm,â he grumbles sleepily. âDid you rest?â
You nod. âMhm.â
âGood.â
Thereâs a beat of silence as you both settle down to sleep again.
"what's going on over here?" jack sidles over to you and javadi, interrupting your animated conversation. javadi's eyes go wide before she awkwardly stammers, forcing on a smile.
"oh nothing. um, we were just talking about-" she immediately closes her mouth
"the omegaverse." you answer when javadi stops, suddenly embarrassed about telling your attending the topic of your conversation
"the... omegaverse?" he questions with that boyish sideways grin already forming, his arms already crossing over his chest as he waits for an explanation
cw: omegaverse talk, no use of y/n, reader is an r1, awkward flirting, probably ooc but it's silly and funny
wc: 1.2k
"Yeah, I heard about the furry convention." You remark to Santos with an amused look in your eyes as she side eyes you. You're doing rounds, talking about day shift patients and the goings on.
"You know about the convention? Just casually?" She questions. You can only imagine the comment she's about to make.
"Furries?" Javadi speaks up, appearing beside you. Her eyes are wide like she's interested in thr conversation she's inserted herself in. You don't mind, not really. Not the same way Santos does, made obvious with the way she walks off with a huff muttering something about charting.
"Uh yeah, apparently." You answer Javadi, your hands in your pockets.
"Have you ever heard of alpha, beta, omega?" She immediately shuts her mouth when she realizes that her words have come out faster than her brain can stop her.
You hold in a snort of laughter.
"Yeah, I have actually," You tell her. The fact that you haven't dismissed her yet causes her to visibly relax. "Are youâŚ.?" You start to ask trailing off without finishing the entire question.
"Oh-!" Her eyes are wide again before she starts shaking her head. "Me? No. No, no, no. I just.. know a lot. About itâŚ"
You're not one to judge anyone on what they do outside of the hospital so you merely shrug, giving her the benefit of the doubt.
"Right. Yeah, being uh, chronically online does that to a person," You quip at her. She looks up at you like she's terrified that you're going to make fun of her. But you shrug your shoulders. "Knowing a lot about niche topics, I mean. Going down rabbit holes and such."
"Yeah, exactly! Rabbit holes! One thing leads to another -" She laughs awkwardly but the smile isn't quite there.
"What's going on over here?" Abbott sidles over to you and Javadi, interrupting your animated conversation. Javadi's eyes go wide before she awkwardly stammers, forcing on a smile.
"Oh nothing. Um, we were just talking about-" She immediately closes her mouth.
"The omegaverse," You answer when Javadi stops, suddenly embarrassed about telling your attending the topic of your conversation.
"The... omegaverse?" He questions with that boyish sideways grin already forming, his arms already crossing over his chest as he waits for an explanation.
While Javadi looks like she wants the ground to swallow her up to get out of the conversation, you take it in stride.
"Yeah," You nod casually like it's the most normal conversation to be having with your attending. "You know, alphas, betas, omegas."
Abbott's eyebrows raise in both humor and curiosity.
"Yeah, I have no idea what you're talking about."
Of course.
Javadi looks between the two of you, torn on if she should answer or not. While she fidgets with her fingers you have an internal war with yourself. Give an in-depth answer, or just a surface level one that'll satisfy him?
"So it's basically-" You start, uncertain.
"A writing trope." Javadi cuts in. She gives you an apologetic look when you glance at her.
She's not wrong, technically, and it was correct enough. Abbott looks at her with a hint of mirth in his eyes, a hidden smile pulling at his lips.
"A writing trope⌠Explain it to me." He says.
You and Javadi share a look before you slowly nod and turn back to direct your attention back to him.
"It's like⌠alpha males?" Abbott asks.
"Well, technically anyone can be an alpha." Javadi begins to answer. When Abbott's eyebrows raise again you let out a sigh through your nose.
"Alphas are the ones who are the most dominant. TheâŚ" you begin to trail off as you think of the least humiliating verbage to use.
"Tops." Javadi chimes in with a smile. Abbott snorts a quiet laugh and you want to die right there. You have half a mind to tell Victoria that she's not helping.
Okay, maybe there are some things that are hard to talk about with him.
"Yes. The tops." You practically grit out.
"So then, who are the bottoms?" Abbott asks. The smug grin on his face makes you deadpan at him.
"The omegas." You respond flatly.
Is now a bad time to wish for an emergency?
"So, the betas areâŚ.?" Abbott lets the question trail.
"âŚ. Neutral ground." You decide on with a thoughtful half shrug.
"Okay, hold on." Abbott holds up a hand while simultaneously holding in his laughter. "So alphas are the.. dominate ones, the leader of the pack so to speak."
You groan internally and wonder if Shen will give you a glowing recommendation for another hospital.
"So to speak." You agree.
The silence that follows feels all consuming as Abbott shifts on his feet.
"How does it work then?" He suddenly asks.
You hesitate before asking, "How doesâŚ. what work?"
"Mating."
You nearly choke. Javadi goes stock still before looking at you, but you can't look at her, not yet.
"How does mating work?" You ask for clarification.
He nods once, smug grin on his face, "Yeah. Mating."
That's how you - and Javadi - end up spending an excruciating lifetime (re: ten minutes) explaining to your attending the ins and outs of the omegaverse. Scent marking, ruts and heats, claiming bites, and finally
"Knotting." Abbott says like it's the most normal thing in the world.
You and Javadi both stare.
"You⌠know what knotting is?" Javadi asks, jaw slack. All you can do is blink.
"Of course I do." Abbott shrugs like he just told that be knows what 2+2 is.
"H-how?" You stammer.
"I mean technically it's similar to a dog-" Javadi starts to answer for him but the smile on his face makes her stop. That a-ha moment hitting her that that isn't the reason he knows what knotting is.
The reality hits both of you at the same time.
"YouâŚ. Already knew all of this, didn't you?" You ask. It's equal parts dismayed and resigned because you just spent almost twenty minutes of your shift embarrassing yourself.
Abbott doesn't reply, not verbally. He just nods once with that smile turning into - what you could only describe as - an evil wicked smirk.
"But-⌠how?" Javadi asks. That's when Abbott shrugs.
"What, you think I've lived this long without learning a thing or two?"
"So why?" You ask slowly.
"For fun." He remarks.
You purse your lips together and nod in defeat. Javadi, still next to you, scoffs out a laugh and a quiet "oh my god".
"You're evil." She tells him with a shake of bed head.
"You think so? I don't think so." He quips back quickly.
"No, she's right. And if not evil? Definitely fucked up." You're quick to chime in from the whiplash you just received.
"C'mon, that's not nice to call your alpha." He croons sarcastically.
"M-my- my alpha?" You sputter. Javadi laughs again.
"Oh I am.. leaving. Bye!"
Now she leaves, of course.
Abbott takes a small step closer to you, not enough to crowd but just enough to drop his voice so only you can hear.
"Gonna let me scent mark you later after shift?"
"Abbott!" You snap as heat starts to flood from your chest to your face.

a/n: something sweet and silly i thought of. enjoy!
cw: idiots falling in love, Roy is oblivious, reader is patient, gn!reader
masterlist ao3 requests
PREVIEW:
...he's just got to figure it out first.
Roy Harper/Reader
Roy Harper doesn't realize he's in love until he's neck-deep. Figures for a man like him who dives into everything headfirst and with nary a caution to the wind, fighting caustic instincts weathered by a life long-lived and hard-endured.
Of course it would be this emotion that eludes definition by him greatest of all. Because he doesn't realize what it is until it's far too lateâand he doesn't realize what manner it is, because Roy drowns by degrees.
The first notch is when he's driving you both home from Dinah and Ollie's vow renewal. That n itself was a tidy, loving affairâsomething you were happy to dress up for with him as he played distantly reticent seat-warmer.
You carried point for social interactions on behalf of you both. This was something he was grateful for and communicated through the familiar clasp of his hand intertwined with yours. Savoring the soothe of your thumb as it became familiar indentation on the curve of his palm.
But it doesn't make impact right away. Not until the two of you drive back to home under the blanket of stars, in the dappled interval of streetlights that illuminate you in dotted flashes down the highway.
It's when he glances over you to you at a stop-light, turning in to confirm what he observed in his peripheral. To see you, slumped in the safety of the carriage, asleep with a soft, lilting snore.
The coalescing of red and amber streetlight bathing you in warm, ethereal glowâa you at peace, who carried him to sheltered harbors.
As he watches you, something twinges tight and low: but then you are bathed in the iridescence of green and he must continue the voyage home. And the moment lingers in the background of his mind with poignant, opaque quality, comprehension of it denied until further notice.
The second moment is when the two of you are in his apartmentâyou are not 'moved in' but you are in the limbo of 'constant visitor,' and familiar one at that. Familiar enough that you are no stranger to Lian who trundles about the room fighting off the necessity for sleep, even though Roy has gruffly hinted and made dry suggestion to wayward daughter.
This is why he feels something odd and stymied when you open your arms to her. And then, without hesitation, Lian scampers over with a grin and giggle, her own arms yearning outwards.
He can only watch with blunt mystification as you heft her into your arms against the full of your hip and a fond hum against your mouth. And in affectionate fashion, look on as you tuck a wayward lock of hair behind the curve of her ear.
"Time for bed, Lian, huh?" You ask with the firm kindness that takes him twice as long to adjust in his own inflection. Soft, effusive laughter that tumbles from you easily as Lian sighs and agrees with battle-weary, "Okay, okayâ"âand recovers with bright, chipper request.
"Read me a story?" She asks in effort to stall for more timeâyou both exchange furtive glance.
"Does Dad want to read you one?" You defer to father in name and blood. And the way you say 'dad' stirs something paternal in regards to Lian.
But in regards to youâit signifies an emptiness that needs filling. And he cannot comprehend what it is, a dearth of realization as he goes to trade hands for Lian and shares a quiet thank you with his eyes. One that you return by virtue of knowing smile.
And it eludes him still when he reads Lian to sleep, to find you watchful audience to the cozy scene, leaning in the span of the doorframe. When something twists with such painful want that he knows he is crossing the path of no returnâbut still he remains unaware.
The third time is when he's shambled back from patrol with a bone-aching exhaustion. A physical malaise that commands him to collapse to the acreage of his well-worn, well-loved couch with nary a thought but to nose his feet out of his shoes and take tumble on the cushions.
He's done it beforeâLian is over at her mother's. No one is there to need him greatly, so he deems this suitable haven for the night.
It's only when the gentle tread of fingers strokes down the apple of his cheek that he is roused from sleep. That he blinks the drowse from his eyes, to find you leaned over the back of the couch.
"Hi, good-lookin'," you murmur in dulcet tones, careful not to greatly intrude. He manages acceptable grimace, a groan interwoven into his broken delivery.
"Could say the same for you." He returns back. This is the only thing he doesn't do by halves, limbs splayed in capricious fashion on the couch. This is the one thing he means with every stitch of him.
"How about we get you to bed?" You ask gently, but it is clear from the way that you are encouraging his arms up: this is no rhetorical question.
"Who says I'm not there?" He grumbles in good-natured cadence, but he lets himself be led. It's no difficult task when the curl of your fingers make divots of heat on his arms, a heat he gravitates to on instinct.
"I do," your grin is evident in your voice, "Because bed isn't complete without you."
It's this that makes him mentally draw up short, your statement taking repetitive echolalia in his head, tumultuous in the foreground of his mind.
As you dab the dried blood from his temples, bid him brush his teeth, coax him from his clothes. Draw the covers over his body in need of the convalescence of a good night's sleep in dimmed lighting. And then, to devotedly slink under the covers with him.
It is as he holds you, limbs entangled between each other, his leg sliding between yours, his arms trucking around you in possessive manner that he realizesâ
âNo other has done this for him. Not Ollie. Not Dinah, not Dick, not Jasonânone. And the thought makes something grow wantingâand makes him clasp you like buoy in dangerous waters. Only then is he able to finally succumb to sleep once more, with the metronome of your soft snores to lull him back to dreams.
There are more to come, that help him to realize. But they are so numerous it becomes death of a thousand cuts.
It is when he comes back to find a note stuck to his apartment door, message scrawled in your handwriting that says 'See you later, Rocodile.'
It is when he finds you and Lian sprawled asleep on the couch, lost to the drowse of slumber as she rises and falls with each breath you circulate through your body.
It is when you make him lopsided, misshapen homemade pizza but he doesn't care the dough is underbakedâit's the best damn thing he's ever tasted.
It is when his set of keys has yours paired besides his and he realizes he can't remember what it looked like alone.
But the final nail in the coffin is when you have to go visit Kara in Metropolis for her bachelorette partyâand the house feels empty. And Lian is with Ollie and Dinahâand he wanders the cavernous apartment that once felt cozy, driven barren once more.
You're busy all nightâsending him pictures, text updates that blip across his screen with less attention to grammatical accuracy in continuous interval.
Each of them he clutches to like lifesaving buoy, memorizing the shape of your face, the curve of your smile, the slant of your eyes in boozy joy. And he realizes what he's missingâhow it stokes a ravenous fire in him, how it curves under the caging of his ribs.
How it emboldens him on his drive to the airport the next afternoon to pick you up, as he waits for you in the terminal in baggy hoodie and roomy sweatpants.
Disheveled in both appearance and thought, though this is all chased from his mind as he sees you, hungover and radiant as the sun to him. He ambles with marked doggedness to you, accepts your hazy greeting, shuffles your luggage around his arm, and locks gazes with you.
Allows you to gauge the rigid set to his jaw, the determined cant to his eyes.
"Hey," He declares. "I love you."
Without preamble, without distinctionâjust so. Just Roy, as he battens down the hatches and waits for the proverbial other shoe to drop.
And your smile crests over your face like the dawn. "I love you too."
"Will youâ"âHe has no use for noble vocabulary when he can offer thisâ"Will you move in with us? Me 'n Lian?"
Your smile grows by degrees, your eyes brilliant with sparkling quality. How he'll never tire of this sight.
"I thought you'd never ask," You chuckle in good, patient humorâallowing him to realize what an oblivious fool he was. And how he'll never make that mistake again.
And when Roy kisses you, committing the shape of your lips to his in as many times as he can remember, he knows he's in deep. And he's just fine with that.

the day starts off as they always do. abby stands over the stove, preparing breakfast for you, herself and junie. your daughter sits on her booster seat at the table, her arms and legs too short to reach on the normal seats. crayons spilled over the dining table, paper strewed over the surface, a piece covering a red doodle junie made âaccidentallyâ.
âmorninâ, baby,â abby says softly, feeling your presence behind her as you wrap your arms around her white wifepleaser clad torso. your head finds itself against her shoulder, gently inhaling the sweet scents of your morning feast. you place a kiss where your head lays and pull away, turning your attention towards your daughter.
âhi, babygirl. what are you drawing?â you ask, smiling sweetly down at her paper. you attempt to make out what it is, you see three stickmen and a house â your little family. except, the stickman who looks like you the most has a little bump on her belly. you bite back a laugh, pointing at the picture.
âwhatâs- whoâs that, baby? is that mama?â your eyes shut tight, lips inside of your mouth as you attempt to remain serious. junie nods, picking up her paper to show you, proudly.
âuh huh! âs my new baby sissy! or brother.. not sure,â junie says, nonchalantly. you hear abby choke on her own breath as she looks over her shoulder at you both.
âyou want a new brother or sister, huh?â your wife walks over from the stove and crouches down, reaching eye level with you both, shooting you a look you know all too well. junie nods feverishly, forcing the paper into abbyâs hands. ignoring abbyâs gaze, you keep your eyes on junie who bats her eyelashes up at you, her eyes flicking between you, abby and the drawing. âmy friend at nursery has a baby sister! junie wants, too.â your daughter, annoyingly, has abbyâs face, and who are you to say no to that face?!
âi donât think itâs a bad idea.â you can hear abbyâs shit eating grin in her voice, you turn your head the opposite way, knowing full well youâll fold as soon as you see both of their faces. you land a quick elbow nudge into abbyâs side.
âoh, iâm sure. junie, baby. you wanna be a good girl?â you ask, changing the subject. she nods, immediately standing up, off of her seat. âgo sit in the living room for me, baby. weâll eat in there, yeah?â you place a kiss on her head as she runs off, giggling â unaware of what sheâs caused.
âi stand by what i said. i donât think itâs a bad idea at all,â abby laughs, standing you and herself back up as she walks back to the stove to finish breakfast. you land a slap on her ass, pinching it after. âhey! what was that for?â she asks, innocently.
âoh, you know. youâre in for it, later.â
âdo you have any names picked out, junie baby?â your wife shouts to your daughter who immediately stands back up to come in.
you groan, unsure if itâs a pleasant groan. your head lays on abbyâs shoulder. maybe it isnât such a bad idea.

The emergency department is not where you thought youâd find yourself at four in the morning. Especially not after you had made such a fuss to your friends about getting home early and going to sleep immediately afterwards.
It had been such a nice night. You had had a nice dinner, ran yourself a hot bath for the first time in ages. Put on a matching pajama set that felt silky on your freshly-shaved legs, curled up beneath a fluffy freshly-cleaned blanket. Sleep had come easily. That is, until the vibrating of your phone woke you up.
Miss Robin had lived in the house next to yours for four decades. As soon as you had inherited the house you now lived in, she had waddled on over, a Tupperware of still-warm cookies in her hands and a bright smile on her face. You had returned the favor by bringing over some leftover lasagna and your friendship had only sprouted further and further.
She was widowed young, her husband passing away from cancer when they were in their forties. Her only son had grown up and moved out, now a lawyer in New York. He was only a six hour drive away, but his job and family seemed to keep him too busy to come and visit his mother. You thought it was bullshit, but Miss Robin had constantly reassured you that her son had reached out enough to keep her happy, so there wasnât much more to say.
Over time, she had become a close confidant of yours. It was silly, especially with the drastic age difference between the two of you, but she was kind and had wisdom you couldnât even fathom. It made the lonely nights in your large house just a bit less haunting.
Which is why her voice over the phone, wavering about how she had fallen and she didnât believe she could get up, had immediately gotten you out of bed. You had slid a baggy hoodie over your pajamas, slid your socked feet into the ugliest pair of sandals you owned, and immediately raced over next door. Luckily, she had given you a key a couple of months ago when she had decided to go on a trip with some friends from her book club, so you were able to barge into her home and find her.
After sending her off in the ambulance, even as she had protested and ensured you that she was fine, you had jumped in your own car and driven to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Ruffled, still donned in the rattiest clothes you own and hair entangled in a ratâs nest, you had been brought back to her room to wait until she got back from a CT, whatever that meant.
Luckily, Miss Robinâs doctor seemed to be nice. A bit ditsy and attached to the coffee in his hand, but competent and kind. She couldnât stop gushing about how handsome he was, anyway, so there was no time to question his doctor-ing between her trying to play matchmaker.
The clock on the wall now reads seven-thirty in the morning. Three and a half hours of sitting in this room after being woken up and youâre feeling it in every part of you, your elbow perched on the railing of Miss Robinâs bed and your chin in your palm. Every couple moments, your eyelids drift closed without your permission, only to be jerked open again a second later at the beep of the heartrate monitor attached to her finger.
You sit up at the sound of the curtain rustling, squinting at the extra bit of light that streams into the space. All of their rooms had been filled despite the early hour the ambulance had come in, meaning that you and Miss Robin were occupying a make-shift room made up of three curtains and a dream. It was loud, especially with the man on the other side of the curtain retching every few minutes.
How lovely.
âHello, Miss Sheffield. Iâll be taking over your care from Dr. Shen so he can head home.â A voice hits your ears, perking up for more news. Hopefully, that meant you could leave soon and catch at least a few hours of sleep before work tomorrow. âIâm Dr -â
âFrank?â His name spills out of your lips before you can stop it, shoulders tensing as you sit straight up.Â
âDr. Frank? What a silly name.â Miss Robin muses playfully. You pass her a look and watch as she mimics zipping her lips closed.
Frank Langdon. Dimpled chin, thick eyebrows, blue-eyed Frank Langdon. He realizes who you are the minute you speak his name into the air, lips parting in surprise as his eyes flicker between you and Miss Robin. Heâs frozen for only a moment, recovering with a shake of his head.
The corners of his lips tilt up in an almost sheepish smile. âDr. Langdon.â He gently corrects the older woman as he looks at her. Then, he finds you again. âItâs nice to see you.â
It almost irks you, the professionalism radiating off of him while your heart thuds harder in your chest. You squirm as a blush naturally creeps up on your cheeks, reaching up to run your fingers through your hair. Your fingers snag on a couple of tangles on their way through and you make a mental note to shift into a ponytail as soon as possible.
Miss Robinâs eyes flicker from the both of you as you sit in an awkward staring contest, your words caught in your throat. âDo you two know each other?â she asks.
âYes.âÂ
Langdon speaks at the same time as you, although his voice is way less squeakier than yours. He gives you a crooked smile before looking back at the actual patient. âI shouldnât admit this as your doctor, but I used to get the answers to my math quizzes off of her.â He moves closer to the bed, pulling his stethoscope off of his neck.Â
With intense focus, he presses the bell to Miss Robinâs chest, situating the eartips into his ears. He murmurs a quick âbreathe deepâ as he slides it along her chest and then back. His gaze flickers from where his hand is placed to her vitals, taking mental notes.
You stay quiet as he works, not wanting to interrupt. It was odd, seeing him after all these years. Taller, more muscle curving along his arms from what you could see through his scrubs. His hair had been constantly quiffed up as a teenager, but now it was settled into a mess of a middle part, loose strands falling over his forehead. Just as handsome as you had found him in high school, although manlier.Â
âYour secretâs safe with me.â Miss Robin sweetly responds, practically beaming as he gives her a soft laugh.Â
Youâre not the only one that has been swooned by his charm, it seems.
âI appreciate that.â Frank looks between the two of you as he grabs a tablet off of a cart, gaze constantly moving. âHow do you two know each other, if you donât mind me asking?âÂ
Your throat feels dry as you swallow nervously, clearing it before you speak. âSheâs my neighbor,â you answer.Â
A loose string at the edge of your hoodie has become the victim of your nervous fidgeting, tugging on it and feeling the sleeve constrict just a bit. âAnd my friend.â You add, suddenly bashful about your friendship with a woman decades older than you. What if he thought you were a loser who couldnât make friends your own age?
Robin hums her agreement. âSheâs a darling,â she gushes. You pretend to miss the pointed look and smile she flashes at you. âSheâs the one who called the ambulance for me today. Ran in there like Superwoman, you shouldâve seen her.â
The urge to sink into your baggy hoodie consumes you, but instead you finally snap off the thread and turn it over in your fingers.Â
âItâs nice that you have someone to help you out, Miss Sheffield. Although I doubt you need it most of the time.â One eye closes in a quick wink and youâre pretty sure you see a blush on her cheeks. âNow, Dr. Shen briefed me quickly on your case, but Iâd like to hear from you what happened this morning.â
Your neighbor gets into a way-too-peppy ramble of everything that led to her fall and happened afterwards, clearly inflating your role in this story. Despite her hyperbolic storytelling, Frank listens intently, nodding in response.
Once sheâs done, he gives her a friendly smile. âAlright. Looking at your vitals, youâre looking good. Your heartrate is steady, your blood pressure is stellar, and you look great to me. We are still waiting on your CT results, but I know you two have been here for a while, so Iâll see about getting a rush on them so you can get home before our morning rush.â
Youâve dozed off without closing your eyes as the two talked, eyes hazy as they try to focus on him. Youâre brought back by his attention suddenly turning to you, sitting up straight and glancing away for a moment to cover up the fact that you had been staring. Not on purpose, of course.
âDo you want me to show you where you can get some coffee?â He offers, brows raising. That crooked grin blossoms again. âYou look like you could use it.â
Miss Robin answers before you do. âSheâd love some!â She chirps.Â
She looks at you, swatting her hands to shoo you out. âGo. You heard the doc. Iâm fine.â Then she gives Langdon a look, one that says âthis girl, am I right,â like theyâre good chums now.
You mustâve slept through the part where they decided to team up against you.
âThank you.â You mumble as you stand up, legs stiff from sitting for so long. Curling your arm around your waist, you press your thumb into the small of your back, hoping to ease the dull ache there.Â
Frank holds the curtain open for you to step out into the hubbub of the emergency department, shutting it behind you with a swish. His hand curls gently around your bicep to pull you out of the way of an incoming gurney, the touch disappearing as soon as itâs there. âYour back hurt?â he asks.
Taking a look around the sudden busy state of the ER, you shake your head dismissively. âItâs just from sitting down for so long. Iâll be fine.âÂ
Your next breath comes out as a long exhale as you walk beside him, shaking your head. âI canât believe youâre a doctor,â you blurt.
âWhy? Because I copied off of you in high school?â Itâs a tease, but his face doesnât change much. His hands come up to wrap around his stethoscope, pulling it flush against the back of his neck and letting his elbows swing.
You scoff playfully, shaking your head as you round the nurseâs station with him. A couple pairs of eyes follow the two of you, but you ignore it. âI didnât think youâd willingly choose to do more school, is all.â
His shoulders raise in a shrug, releasing his stethoscope to push open a door and duck inside. Thereâs cabinets lining one wall, a sink and a refrigerator. A table sits in the middle of the room, looking lonely with only four chairs. The rest of the room is bare, off-white walls and all.Â
You freeze in the doorway. âAm I supposed to be in here?â you ask. âThis looks suspiciously close to a breakroom.â
âDoctorâs lounge,â he corrects. âAnd youâre VIP. No need to go all the way to the cafeteria when I can just make you a cup here.â The door clicks shut behind the both of you, your shoulders relaxing at the sudden quiet.
Noticing your relaxation, Langdon gives you another soft smile as he steps towards the coffee machine. âTake a seat. Enjoy the quiet while you can.â He nods his head towards the chairs.
Flashing him a grateful smile, you sit down, even if your body still ached from being next to Miss Robinâs bed all night. You balance your chin on the palm of your hand, watching as he places the coffee pot into the machine and presses start.Â
âSo,â you start, desperate to fill the silence, âhow have you been in the last decade?â
His arms cross over his chest as he turns to face you, leaning back against the counter. âYou donât have to say it like that, you know. Makes us sound ancient.âÂ
âI feel that way,â you volley.
âFair enough.âÂ
Another crooked grin. He takes a deep inhale as he shuffles on his feet, looking up at the ceiling as if trying to remember everything that happened. âWell, I went to med school. Chose emergency medicine pretty quickly. I like the rush.â
You nod in response, eyes flickering down as he turns around to gather the coffee pot.Â
He carefully pours some into a singular mug as he continues speaking. âI married Abby.â He notes, octave raising as if waiting for your surprise. âWe have two kids. Tannerâs four and Pennyâs two. I got them a dog, too, which she wasnât too happy about..â
Slight disappointment blooms in your chest at the idea of him being married. Youâre not sure why youâre shocked, however, as Abby and Frank had been connected at the hip when they had started dating in high school. It had broken your little teenage heart to see them together, especially after pining for him all year and hoping that asking for answers would turn into more.
The two kids were definitely a shocker. You tried to imagine the Frank that you had known as a father, reckless and loose-limbed. Did his son have the same charm to him that made him get everything he wanted? Was his daughter as discreetly empathetic?
He gestures to the cream and sugar, in which you snap out of your imagination and nod.
âAbby and I officially divorced a few months ago, though.â He reveals as he pours, tongue darting out to stick between his lips in focus.
You canât stop the unhinging of your jaw in surprise, his nonchalant tone throwing you off. Langdon looks amused as he sets your coffee mug down in front of you, settling into the seat next to you.Â
âSorry. Uhm, Iâm sorry to hear that.â The cup covers your blush as you bring it to your lips, taking a slow sip and trying not to wince at the sting on your tongue.Â
He shakes it off with a shake of his head, another strand of hair draping over his forehead. Thereâs no move to push them away from his eyes.
âItâs okay. It was for the best.â The reassuring smile he gives you doesnât contradict his statement, so you allow yourself to relax again. After a beat, he speaks again. âWhat about you? Husband? Wife? Kids? Pets?â
A laugh bubbles out of you before you can stop it, fingers tightening around your mug as you shake your head. âGod, no. Not even close.â Your tongue runs along your bottom lip to catch a stray drop of coffee, ignoring the way Frankâs eyes flicker downwards at the movement. âI inherited my grandmotherâs house here in Pittsburgh when she passed, which is when I moved in next to Miss Robin. Since then, Iâve just been focusing on work.â
âWhat do you do?â He asks, sounding so genuinely curious that your heart skips one singular beat.Â
The good news is that if you end up having a heart attack, thereâs a doctor right in front of you. Did they still do mouth-to-mouth these days?
You squirm nervously in your seat, stretching out that one taut muscle in your back. âIâm a mental health social worker. I work at a community health center.â
That seems to sit with him for a moment, an unrecognizable emotion flashing across his face before he settles it. His eyebrows raise as he leans back more, a hand sprawled on the table in front of him. âReally?â he asks. âThat means there could be a world where we ended up at a hospital together.â
There goes that heart fluttering again. You press the heel of your palm into the middle of your sternum to try and calm it, reminding yourself that Frank Langdon was just charming, not the prince of Pittsburgh. âWhat a world thatâd be,â is the only response you can think of.
Langdon grins at you again, quiet for a moment. He goes to answer when the door to the doctorâs lounge creaks open, his attention immediately turning.Â
âDr. Langdon? I was wondering if I could get a consult on the toddler in South 15.â A blonde asks tentatively, poking just her head in. Her hair is tied back in a tight braid, thick glasses perched on her nose. She looks at you, eyes widening before looking back at the man across from you. âIt can wait.â
His hand raises to stop her from leaving, pressing his palm into the table as he rises to his feet. âNo worries, Mel, we were just catching up.â He takes a couple steps until just his fingertips are resting on the wood, looking down at you. âDo you think youâll be able to find your way back?â
Not wanting to take up anymore of his time, you stand up abruptly, grabbing the cup. âOh, yeah, no problem.â Your feet carry you towards the sink, ready to toss out the rest of your drink.
Frankâs fingers close around your bicep before you can do so, still sporting a soft grin. âTake it with you. I can grab it when I come to discharge your neighbor.âÂ
He lets go of your arm before heading towards the door, spinning around and walking backwards when he gets closer to it. His hand reaches behind him to grab it handle, pushing it down and opening without looking. âIf you need anything, tell one of the nurses to get me, okay? Iâll be around.â
The door shuts behind him before you can finish saying âthank you,â leaving you stranded in the doctorâs lounge with a lukewarm cup of coffee in your hands.
Once you find your way back to Robinâs makeshift room, after fumbling around for way less time than you thought you would, youâre immediately greeted with a knowing grin.
âWhat are you smiling at?â You accuse, pinching your eyebrows at her as you hover near the wall. The idea of sitting down again makes every ache pulse.
A girlish giggle leaves her lips. âYou have a crush on my doctor.âÂ
The crochet hook in her hands, produced from her stuffed purse, click against her wedding ring as she loops a green thread of yarn through a black one. Earlier, she had insisted that she was making you a scarf in exchange for helping her out this morning, but right now it just looks like a handkerchief.Â
An unattractive snort quickly spills out of you. âI had a crush on your doctor before he was even a doctor. Donât act like you just figured out the secrets to the universe.â You tilt your chin up at her before pointedly looking at the project in your lap. âGet back to your crocheting, grandma.â
By eight-thirty, youâve called into work with a lame excuse about how you were sick with some odd stomach bug. Still, the curtain doesnât peel open until an hour later, Frankâs head popping through first before the rest of his body follows.
âSorry for the wait,â he apologizes immediately. The muscles in his hand tense as he closes the curtain, the flex not lost on you. âWe always get a morning rush from patients who forced themselves to push through their symptoms for the night.âÂ
Unfortunately, the coffee from earlier hadnât outweighed the exhaustion that stemmed from sitting in the emergency department longer than you had slept. Youâre practically deadweight where youâre slouched against the wall, earning you an apologetic smile that you let yourself sleepily enjoy.
Pointer finger tapping away at a tablet, Langdon speaks without looking up. âYour CT shows no breaks or fractures. Your initial examination when you were brought in shows no signs that we should be worried for internal bleeding or head injury.â He glances up through his eyelashes at Robin, lips pulling into a friendly smile. âIâll do one more exam just to make sure nothingâs shown up to surprise us, but we should be good to discharge you shortly.â
âGod bless,â you grumble beneath your breath. Itâs quiet, and meant to be private, however itâs obvious by the huff of a laugh Frank gives you that he heard.
Your focus is basically gone as he examines Robin, fingers gentle along her skin as he checks every spot she had banged and bruised. His hands press into her abdomen to check for sensitivity, those strands hanging in front of his face as he leans over.
You drift off to the sound of him and Miss Robin talking about what she was crocheting, your temple pressed to the cool wall.
An hour later, according to the clock on the wall, youâre roused by a hand on the shoulder. To your surprise, Robinâs standing above you, her other hand on her purse. âSorry to wake you, but I do need a ride home.â
âDonât apologize,â you rasp. You press your fingers into your eyes before standing up, jaw falling in a large yawn. âIâll pull the car around for you.â
Glancing around at the emptiness of the room, the corners of your lips pull down for a moment. âDid I miss Fr - Dr. Langdon?âÂ
She glances at you knowingly, lips pulled into a reassuring smile. âHe hasnât come back since he did my exam earlier. A nurse brought me the paperwork.â Her pointer finger pokes into your shoulder. âGuess he didnât have much to come back for since you were asleep.â
You fix her with a grumpy scowl before swatting her hand away, rising to your feet with a soft grunt. âIâm letting you sit here alone next time.â
The older womanâs laugh echoes behind you as you step out from behind the curtain. You duck through the swarms of people that have suddenly flooded the place in the hours you had been there. Blinking through the sleepy haze over your eyes, you move towards the exit, stopped only by the sound of your name.
âHey! Did Miss Sheffield get her discharge papers?â Langdonâs way too peppy compared to your exhaustion, a bright light in his blue eyes. âI meant to stop by to say goodbye, but then a trauma came in, and then my patient coded.â He trails off, obviously not wanting to bring the mood down.
He shoulders up beside you as you continue walking, an airy swagger to his walk. Thereâs no move to stop you from walking, just simply joining you in your stroll towards the exit.
âItâs alright,â you assure. âApparently some nurse brought them by. Sheâs still in the room while I bring my car around, if youâd like to say goodbye now.â
Frank looks over his shoulder for a moment before back at you, head tilting thoughtfully. âIâll walk you out first. I can get her situated in a wheelchair while youâre driving.â
Next to you, heâs the picture of nonchalance. Despite the crazy job he has and the lives that are constantly in his hands, thereâs not a single wave of nervousness radiating off of him. His shoulders are down away from his ears, his arms swinging at his sides, each step sure.
Heâs always been more confident. A chatterbox inside of class, sat next to the quiet students in hopes itâd quell his attention deficiency. The type to toss a wadded up piece of paper into a trash can and holler when it actually goes in, despite only being a few steps away. A loser covered up in a cloak of charm and confidence.Â
Itâs odd to see it become useful professionally, for him to find the perfect place to turn that energy into something good. If someone had asked you what you thought his life-time career had ended up being before today, you wouldâve guessed he had gone into real estate.
âItâs nice to see you again.â You repeat the same words he had said to you earlier, although thereâs something gentler. âThis job seems to really suit you.â
Frankâs head turns to pass you a grin, eyes flickering around at the emergency department like heâs looking at it in a different light. âI enjoy it,â he admits. âThe rush of constantly moving, the âhelping peopleâ aspect. Thereâs been more than a few bad days, but I try to remind myself that the good outweighs the bad.â
A smile plays on your lips without you even registering it there, chuckling lightly. âNever thought the day Iâd see you serious about anything.â You note with a playful raise of your brow.
His lips part in a puckish gasp. âWhat? I was focused,â he insists.
âYeah. Focused on Natalie Jefferson,â you shoot back.
That turns his mock surprise into his signature coprophagous grin, eyes rolling and head rolling with them. âI was not focused on Natalie.â His tongue touches the corner of his mouth for just a moment as he watches you, shifting around the people moving through the halls like itâs a second nature.Â
âYou totally were!â Your energy has slowly returned, skipping your next step so that you could turn to face him more. âIâd turn around to look at you and youâd be staring directly at her when the board was in front of me. You stole her seat when she got up so that sheâd talk to you when she came back.â
A laugh rumbles out of him, shaking his head again. He says your name with an emphasis, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye. When he notices your pointed look, he exhales heavily, shoulders falling. âI wasnât looking at her.â
You groan. âI may have worn glasses, Frank, but I could still see.â
âI wasnât looking at her,â he insists. After a beat of you giving a blank stare, he tries to push down his smile. âI was looking at you. But then youâd turn around and look at me, so Iâd look away. Usually at Natalie, who just happened to be sitting next to you.â
His focus moves to in front of him, giving a passing nurse a friendly smile. âAnd Iâd sit in her seat so I could talk to you better.â Those blues return back to you, calmer and more knowing. âBecause I liked talking to you, but could never find a reason.â
For a moment, you just stare at him, eyebrows pinched in confusion. You try to make sense of what heâs telling you, but canât seem to find what heâs trying to bring up.
Finally, the two of you breach the doorway leading outside, right in front of the crosswalk heading towards the parking lot. His fingers curl around your bicep to stop you, turning you to face him. âConfession time?â
A bit dumbfounded, and definitely stunned by the feel of his hand still on your arm, you dazedly look up at him. Slowly, you nod.
âI didnât need your answers.â Despite the confession, he keeps his bright grin. The only evidence of his bashfulness is the pink on his cheeks, slowly creeping to the tips of his ears. âI thought you were pretty, so I needed a reason to talk to you. I figured you assumed I was a stupid annoyance, which you were right, so I thought that asking you for answers to homework and tests would be the easiest way to get to know you.â
Frank shuffles on his feet, looking over your shoulder to ensure none of his coworkers were around. âBut then nothing ever happened, so I thought you didnât like me and I tried to move on.â
Your jaw has been dropped for the last couple minutes, taking in everything he was telling you. Disbelief crawls up your body like a hot flash, along with playful annoyance at the way he just keeps fucking smiling at you. Finally, your hand whips out to smack his bicep, scowling at him.
âFrank!â You scold, because youâre not sure what else to do. âI had a crush on you, you idiot! I didnât talk to you outside of schoolwork because I thought thatâs all you wanted to talk to me for! You idiot!â
You slap him again purely because you feel like it, only letting a smile grace your face when he takes a singular step back and laughs.Â
After both of you finish laughing at the absurdity of it all, shaking off the remnants of your giggle, he raises his hand to rub it along his clean-shaven. âWow. Teenage Frank really messed that one up, didnât he?â
Rather than assure him, you purse your lips, nodding. âHe did.âÂ
He sighs, eyes caught on your face like heâs unable to pull them away. Thereâs a moment of silence before he speaks again, softer. âWell, canât repeat that, can I?â He shoves his hands into his pockets, shoulders still low and relaxed. âCan I take you out to dinner sometime?â
âDepends. Are you going to look at another girl every time I try to make eye contact?â
âI promise you that my eyes will only be on you. And the server.â Langdon holds up three fingers. âScoutâs honor.â

Summary: Johnâs hands hook onto the railing of the gurney, his eyes darting to your face every few seconds as your entourage of medical professionals steers you down the hall.Â
âSo,â He offers, âFancy seeing you here.âÂ
And you so donât want to let him make you smile, but you canât help yourself.Â
âThis is a bit much,â He adds as youâre wheeled onto the elevator, âI mean, I told you you could call and you show up at my job instead? I appreciate the effort, but you're coming off a little desperate.â
When you propel yourself out of bed, youâre blindly guided by two things: your instinctual knowledge of where your en suite bathroom is, and your stomach violently rejecting its contents.
You drop to the floor, knees roughly smacking the cold tile as you fumble with the lid of your toilet. Your body shudders as you heave, fingers gripping the cool porcelain desperately. When the sickness finally lets up, you lean back, blinking the tears from your eyes. You swallow thickly, drawing in a deep breath, then wincing as your stomach threatens to revolt again. You lean back, closing the lid and flushing the toilet as you fight to steady your breathing.Â
The knocking on your door makes you jump, and you raise a shaking hand to your chest, croaking,Â
âYeah?âÂ
âYou okay in there?âÂ
You nod, though your youngest sister canât see you, then manage,
ââM fine.âÂ
âCan I open the door?âÂ
â...Yeah.âÂ
Itâs a moment before Lisaâs opening the door and peering inside, her brow furrowed at the sight of you where youâre still sitting on the floor.
âAre you okay?âÂ
âYou already asked me that.âÂ
âYeah, but that was before I saw you looking likeâŚWell, this.âÂ
âWho taught you to be so sweet?âÂ
âYou did.âÂ
You offer a wobbly smile, huffing softly as you push yourself up. âAsshole.âÂ
âUh-huh.â Lisa folds her arms across her chest. âWhat the hell, by the way?âÂ
âI donât know,â You grumble, pumping soap into your hands and scrubbing up along your arms where you were leaning against the toilet. âProbably something I ate last night.âÂ
âCould always call your doctor friend and make sure.âÂ
The mention of him has your stomach churning again. âHa-ha.âÂ
âHe should be getting off-shift soon,â Lisa adds as you rinse with mouth wash, âCould invite him over for a check-up.âÂ
You swish, spit, and shoot Lisa a glare couched in a sickly sweet smile.Â
âThanks for all of your help, Li.âÂ
Lisa snorts, pushing off of the door frame as she drawls, âFiiine. Iâm gonna get ready for class.âÂ
âYou need a ride?âÂ
âNo, Joeyâs gonna come pick me upâdonât.âÂ
âHm.âÂ
âDonât start.âÂ
âI wouldnât have to start if you werenât making bad choices.âÂ
âYou never like my boyfriends.âÂ
âThatâs because all of your boyfriendsââ You cut yourself off, raising a hand to staunch a nauseating belch, âSuck.âÂ
When Lisa doesnât answer right away, you figure that sheâs leftâbut as you straighten back up, you find her watching you in the mirror with a narrowed gaze.Â
âAre you sure youâre gonna be okay?âÂ
âYeah,â You nod, turning to face her. âIâm working from home today, anyway. Weâve got rice, weâve got broth, weâve got saltines. Honestly, that was probably it, nothing left in the tank. Iâm fine.âÂ
Lisa hesitates before she closes the space between the two of you, raising her hand and pressing the back to your forehead. You force a poker face, doing your best not to lean into the coolness of her fingers. Her brow wrinkles, lips screwing to the side, thenâ
âI have no idea what your forehead is supposed to feel like.âÂ
âGo to class and learn.âÂ
Lisa scoffs, finally turning away and slouching back to her room. You wait until her footsteps have faded completely before reaching out, quietly pushing the bathroom door closed again. You swallow, wincing at the slight ache in your throat.Â
You donât feel like youâre going to throw up again, but thereâs an pain in your side, one that you hadnât noticed when you were stumbling your way to bed. You raise your hand, rubbing slightly over a spot on your right and wincing again. Christ, that hurts. Did you bang it when you were getting down to get to the toilet? That must be it.Â
Of course, it couldnât hurt to ask a professional. You didnât block him, he said the door was still open if you ever wanted to talk, so maybe you could just send a quick little questionâ
No. No.Â
You have broth, you have rice, you have Google. You can figure this out. Besides, it probably really was just something you ate.Â

âThis is John, the guy Iâve been telling you about!âÂ
The words were half-lost on the music being pumped through your best friendâs place, and the chatter of the other people crammed into her shared 450 square foot two-bedroom apartment. You had been tempted to dip out of the party nearly an hour ago, but your friend had sworn that not only was the guy she was setting you up with going to eventually be there (even though he was running late), but he was well worth waiting for.Â
You turned to face the mystery man, and you were, admittedly, caught off-guard. It was a combination of things: the scrubs he was wearing, the Dunkin cup in hand, and the fact that the guy was really, really cute.
âHi,â You said, offering your hand and your name in tandem. He took hold of your hand, dipping closer and requesting:Â
âOne more time?âÂ
You hesitated before leaning in and giving him your name again.Â
âNice to meet you!â He smiled before glancing around. âItâs a little loud in here. You wanna get some air?âÂ
It was cooler on your friendâs fire escape, and so much quieter. You curled your arms around yourself, toying with your little plastic cup of wine before glancing over at John.Â
âCan I ask,â You nodded toward the Dunkin.Â
âOhâYou want a sip?âÂ
âNo, no,â You shook your head. âI was wondering why you brought aâŚFrankly massive Dunkin iced coffee to a housewarming. Seems like an odd choice.âÂ
âI could only stop by for a bit before I have to go to work.âÂ
âJeez, what time do you start work?âÂ
âShift starts at seven. Twelve hours.âÂ
âExplains how big the coffee is.âÂ
âSure does.â He raised it again, giving it a little shake, the ice rattling against the plastic. âYou sure you donât want a sip?âÂ
âUhâNo. Thanks.âÂ
John just shrugged, raising the orange straw to his lips and taking a deep pull.Â
âYou know, I was curious about you,â He offered once heâd swallowed.Â
âOh?âÂ
âMhm. Heard a lot.âÂ
âGood or bad?âÂ
âGood, I think.âÂ
âLike what?âÂ
âLikeâŚYouâre the oldest of three sisters, really family oriented. Have your life together, have very high expectations for yourselfâŚAnd that youâre a stickler for punctuality.â His teasing smile made your belly flutter. âEven more surprised that youâre still here, considering Iâm late for our little set-up.âÂ
And you could have told him that your friend had to talk you out of leaving twice, that you had nearly called it when her roommateâs sleazeball of a boyfriend tried to hit on you. All of that was true. Butâ
âMaybe I was curious about you, too.âÂ
Johnâs bright smile made staying all the more worth it.

According to Google, you have food poisoning, stage 4 stomach cancer, and your period all at once.Â
And while you could waste your time speculating about something thatâll probably just pass, you choose instead to focus on your job. All you know for certain is that you have two reports due, three RFPs, and a presentation draft due by EoD, as well as a meeting with your manager for your annual review. All of that means only one thing:Â
You do not have time to spend fucking around, half-asleep in bed, or throwing up the little bit of room-temperature water that youâve been able to get down. Â
But that doesnât stop your body from revolting against you.Â
You manage to get bits and pieces of your work done in five to ten minute intervals, with your belly betraying any little bit of liquid, nutrients, or hope that you manage to take in. You go through your recipes, your fridgeâyou just manage to stop yourself from going through your trash to double check the dates on the ingredients that you used to make dinner last night. But it couldnât really be that, could it? Youâd checked all of the dates before youâd cooked, even thrown out a couple of ingredients because they were just a day past their best-by.Â
Itâs your period, it has to be. This doesnât feel anything like the last time you had food poisoningâat least, what youâre pretty sure was food poisoning.Â
--Â
âHow ya doinâ over there, champ?â
You glared down at your phone, lips twisted into a pout. âI feel like death.â
âYouâre answering me, so definitely not death.âÂ
âI said I feel like death, not that Iâm dyingâugh,â You groaned as your lower belly gurgled, shifting where youâd been sitting on your toilet for nearly ten minutes, âGod.âÂ
âWhat are your symptoms?âÂ
âI really donât want to disclose that to you.âÂ
âOh, câmon,â John chuckled, âIâm a professional.âÂ
âNo!âÂ
âWhy not?âÂ
âItâs embarrassing.âÂ
âIt canât be anywhere near what I see in the ED on the nightly.âÂ
âWhatâs the most embarrassing thing youâve ever seen?â
âHonestly? Coupleâa days ago, we had a guy came in with a Darth Vader figurine stuck up where it shouldnât have been.âÂ
Your jaw dropped with a stunned laugh. âAre you serious?âÂ
âOh yeah. He thought heâd be able to keep it from slipping in completely because the cape was triangular, but it went a little too far. He came in when he gave up reaching for the feet.âÂ
â...Okay, this is one step below that.âÂ
âJust one?âÂ
The slight smile in Johnâs tone had a grudging one pulling at your lips. âMaybe a couple.âÂ
âUh-huh. Tell you what, I get off shift in twenty. Iâll swing by with a goodie bag.âÂ
âI canât handle goodies right now, John.âÂ
âNot even if those goodies include animal crackers, broth, electrolytes, and pepto bismol?âÂ
âIâm not going to be much of a conversationalist.âÂ
âItâll be a drive by. You buzz me up, I hand you the bag, I steal a couple of kisses, you go back inside.âÂ
âYou have a suspicious amount of this interaction planned out.âÂ
âWell, this girl Iâm dating has told me that she likes a man with a plan.âÂ
Your smile stretched into a full-blown, lovesick grin, and you raised your hand to scrub across your eyes.Â
âFine. JustâŚgive me a five minute warning before you get here?âÂ
âSure. Hey, you might even find a surprise Darth Vader figurine among your goodiesââÂ
âJohn!âÂ
--Â
By noon, youâve managed to polish off your notes on the RFP, but the presentation and reports have barely been touched. You message your manager reluctantly, warning that youâre a little under the weather, but still in a good place to finish everything on your plate by EoD.Â
And you do have every intention of finishing things off. You decide to take a half-hour nap, just give your body a little bit of a rest before getting back on the horse.Â
Itâs a good plan in theoryâbut your head hasnât been down for two minutes before youâre clambering out of bed, hardly making it to the sink before the singular sip of gatorade youâd taken twenty minutes ago is making a bid for freedom.Â
You groan, resting your forehead against the sinkâand then whine when you hear your cell phone ringing. You straighten slowly, bracing your hand back against the wall and stepping back into your room, taking up the phone from your bedside table. Ohâgod. Do you have the patience for this call right now?Â
You lower yourself to your bed, swiping the call acceptance and sticking it on speaker.Â
âWhatâs up, Lilah?âÂ
âHoly fuck, Lisa wasnât kidding. You sound like shit.âÂ
You muster a weak smile, drawing your legs into the bed and pulling your blankets around your lap.Â
âMom and dad did a hell of a job curating your manners.âÂ
âMm, but youâre the one who really honed them, generalissimo.âÂ
You roll your eyes, resting your pounding head back against the wall of decorative pillows that youâve piled up, and have been using to keep yourself upright for the last few hours. Growing up as the middle child, Lilah had always been the one raging against your de facto parental machine, where Lisa tended to push back a touch, but ultimately fell in line.Â
You pull in a steadying breath, catching on the sounds of school kids in the background on the other end of the phone. Must be recess.Â
âWhaddaya want, bean?âÂ
âI canât just wanna talk to my big sister?âÂ
âWillingly? It would be a first.âÂ
âAre you pregnant?âÂ
The thought nearly triggers another heave.Â
âDonât be ridiculous,â You snap. âDid Lisa tell you that?âÂ
âNo, butââÂ
âIâm on birth control, I have always used protectionââÂ
âThose things arenât always 100%, accidents happenââÂ
âAnd itâs been a while.âÂ
â...If youâre sure.âÂ
âJohn and I broke up months ago,â You remind her, âAnd even before that, we hadnât beenâŚâ You wince. âIntimate.âÂ
âBlegh, okay, we get it.âÂ
âIâm just sayingââÂ
âGod forbid the two of you pushed the beds together.âÂ
âLilah, for godssakeââÂ
âI still donât understand why you broke up with that man.âÂ
The comment stops you in your tracks, eyes unfocused on your dimming laptop screen. Youâve done your best not to think about Johnâyour âhowâs and âwhyâs and âwhat mightâve beenâs. The closest youâve gotten in the last few weeks is the brief flirtation with his contact in your phone that morning.Â
â...Okay,â Lilah finally concedes, seeming to take your silence in the spirit with which itâs meant. âNot pregnant.âÂ
âItâs probably actually my period, anyway. You know I get queasy when Iâm PMSingâand my cramps suck right now. Iâll be spotting by, like, 3pm at the latest.âÂ
âAnd if youâre not, your uterus will hear about it.âÂ
âExactly.âÂ
A moment of slightly tense silence, punctuated only by the odd giggle and screech of children from her end.Â
âAlright,â Lilah sighs, âThe principal is giving me the stink eye, I should probably pay attention to the kids.âÂ
âLilahâ!â
âKidding! Jesus. Feel better.âÂ
âThanks.âÂ
Lilahâs grunt is her only sign off before the call cuts. You reach out, drawing your laptop close and squirting at the screen for a moment before squeezing your eyes shut at the throbbing of your headache. Christ.Â
It isnât as if you havenât explained your break up to Lilah, because you haveâat least twice. But youâll tolerate her needling, her willful ignorance, it doesnât matter. Itâs not her relationship, itâs yoursâwas yours.Â
--Â
âI donât think Iâm gonna get Christmas off.âÂ
âAw, really?â You frowned, setting your planner down on the kitchen table and watching John reach for one of the two remaining Munchkins in the carton he brought over. âI thought you asked.âÂ
âI mean, I did, but it was a little slammed when it came upâmore of an informal request.â He raised his fingers to suck the powder off of them, adding through a full mouth: âI put in for it, but itâs up in the air.âÂ
âHmm. Well if you canât, thatâs alright. Itâs just gonna be me and the girls.âÂ
âWhat about your parents?âÂ
You waved John off, shaking your head. âTheyâre going to be on a cruise.âÂ
âOof,â John sighed, slouching back in his seat, âYou think you felt bad when you had food poisoningââÂ
âOkay.âÂ
âThose floating buffet-laden crap shows.â
âOkay!âÂ
âNice scenery, though.âÂ
You rolled your eyes, propping your chin up on your hand as you considered him.Â
âWhatâs your mom gonna do if you canât get Christmas off?âÂ
Johnâs lips pressed into a thin line, and your eyes caught on the bob of his Adamâs apple, the fidget of his fingers toying with the strings on his hoodie.Â
â...John?âÂ
Another moment before he shrugged. âWhat she does when I usually canât get the holidays off, I guess.âÂ
You opened your mouth to ask, but he was sitting up before you could, shuffling his chair closer. âSo whatâd you get me?âÂ
Your confusion melted to fondness, mind flashing to the smart watch youâd spent weeks researching and comparison shopping for, and you scoffed, âAs if Iâd tell you.â
âCâmon, gimme a hint. Is it black? Red? Lacey?âÂ
--Â
Your manager only gets two minutes into your performance review before she ultimately cuts it short.
âYou know what, why donât we reschedule?âÂ
You try to tell her that youâre fine to go through with it, but she waves you off: âIâll throw some time on for tomorrow. Take a break.âÂ
You manage a weak smile, an, âOkay,â and a, âPing me if you need anything,â before you close out of the meeting. You lower the laptop lid with a sense of defeat, tears crowding your dry, tired eyes. When the urge to puke pops up again, you canât make it all the way to the bathroom, instead lowering yourself to the floor and hunching over the trash bin by your bed.Â
Itâs nothing but bile that devolves into dry heaves, and by the time youâre through, your pounding head is spinning. You brace your hand on the floor, trying to ground yourself, but it doesnât hold, and thereâs nothing more you can do as your world tilts.Â
--Â
The hand on your cheek, then your forehead, is so cold, and a distant, âHoly shit,â sounds so familiar. Itâs chased by, âHow long has she been like this,â and a frantic, âShe wasnât this bad this morning!âÂ
You groan as youâre turned onto your back, wincing at the onslaught of bright light. It takes a moment, but the face that swims into view is comforting.
âLi-Li,â You smile, raising a hand to cup Lisaâs cheek. âHow was school?âÂ
âHow long have you been on the floor?âÂ
âDid that boy drive you?âÂ
You hear a scoff, a grumble of, âOn deathâs fucking doorstep and still the captain of the morality police.âÂ
âLilah, shut upââ
âBean,â You struggle to crane your neck as you look for Lilah. âLilah, what are youââ You try to sit up, flounder, flop back and whack your head roughly on the nightstand, âWhatâreââ
âChrist, Lilah, call a fucking ambulance!â Lisa snaps.Â
âWhereâsââ You raise your hand, patting along as much of your sheets as you can reach, âWhereâs my work laptop?âÂ
âOkay,â Lisa soothes, easing you to lie down fully, âJust relax, okay? Weâre gonna get you help.âÂ
Even in your confusion and fog, you can hear her panic, and you tut softly. âIâm okay, Li. Tell bean.âÂ
âLilahââÂ
âIâm on with the fucking operatorâNo, I wonât watch my language, we need a fucking ambulance here, like ten minutes ago!â
--Â
You do your best to answer the EMTs, but theyâre only a few questions in before theyâre loading you onto a stretcher, telling your sisters that youâre being taken to Pittsburgh General.Â
Lisaâs climbing into the back of the ambulance with you, and you only manage to request that someone grab your work laptop before the doors are being slammed shut and Lilah is out of sight.Â
The ride is hellish, bumpy and painful, and far longer than it should be when you wind up rerouted to PTMC.Â
--Â
âCan we talk about Thanksgiving?âÂ
âSure. Are we rankinâ sides?âÂ
You shot a sidelong glance in Johnâs direction, eyes narrowed slightly.Â
âTrying to make plans, actually.âÂ
âAh,â He nodded. âYeah, we can try.âÂ
âMy parents are probably going to be in town for it this year,â You shifted in your seat, trying to settle your nerves. This was normal, this was something that couples dealt with all the time. So why were you bracing yourself? âAndâŚI mean, weâve been together for a while, almost a year now, so I wondered if you wanted toâŚMeet them, finally.âÂ
âYou really think theyâll hold still long enough for me to make their acquaintance?â
And it was a fair question, but stacking that on top of your mounting nerves was nearly enough to send you over the edge.Â
âItâs a yes or no question, J. I mean, I know some of it will hinge on whether you can get work off or not, butââÂ
âIf theyâre the deep fried turkey type and Iâm on shift, maybe you can bring them in. They can see me in action.âÂ
You closed your eyes, taking a steadying breath in and shaking your head. âForget it.âÂ
âIâm kiddingââÂ
âNot everything is a joke, John.âÂ
--Â
Thereâs so much input at once. The ambulance was its own array of sound, but now you have doctors, nurses, EMTs chatting over you, underscored by the chatter and yelling of fellow patientsâand somewhere, not far off, your sisterâs panicked voice as youâre wheeled into a room.
âI'm gonna be okay, Lisa,â You mumble, but your promise is cut off by a surge of pain. You canât help but cry out, trying to squirm away from the pressure thatâs been applied to your right side.Â
âWeâve got rebound tenderness.âÂ
âWhatâs that mean?â You hiss.
âThat means,â A new voice in the room, but not a new voice to you, âThat weâre looking atââÂ
You lift your tearing eyes to that all-too familiar face as he finally registers that itâs you in the bed, as it stops him in his tracks.Â
âShen?â Someone urges, but heâs breathing out, âShit,â eyes flitting to where Lisa is huddled nearby.Â
âYou know each other?â That same voice presses, and John manages,Â
âI wasâSheâs myââÂ
âOkay,â Someone else steps up to the bed, leaning over you, âMaâam, Iâm Dr. AbbotââÂ
And youâre trying to listen, you are, but youâre also tracking where John is rounding over to Lisa, leaning in to ask questions, to talk, to reassure, you canât tellâ
âDo you understand?â Abbot tacks on, but no, you donât. You didnât catch a word, he said, so you shake your head. âYour appendix is on the verge of bursting, we need to get you up to surgery.âÂ
âSurgery?â Lisa pipes up, âLike, now?âÂ
âAs soon as possible.âÂ
âWhereâs Lilah?â You whimper.Â
âOhâShit, sheâs going to the wrong hospital!â Lisaâs out the door without a second glance, drawing her phone out of her pocket.Â
âListen,â Abbot leans closer to hold your attention, âIf we donât get your appendix out, it could cause some serious problems. Itâs still intact, but we need to remove it before it can rupture and cause you any more problems.âÂ
âORâs prepped,â Is mentioned somewhere behind you, and suddenly the bed is moving again.Â
âIâll go up with her.â Johnâs at your side in a second, and he and Abbot are sharing a look that you donât understand over your gurney before Abbot drops away completely. Johnâs hands hook onto the railing of the gurney, his eyes darting to your face every few seconds as your entourage of medical professionals steers you down the hall.Â
âSo,â He offers, âFancy seeing you here.âÂ
And you so donât want to let him make you smile, but you canât help yourself.Â
âThis is a bit much,â He adds as youâre wheeled onto the elevator, âI mean, I told you you could call and you show up at my job instead? I appreciate the effort, but you're coming off a little desperate.âÂ
âJohn.â
âAppendix, too, you overachiever. Couldnât you have broken your wrist, gotten a concussion, something easier?âÂ
Your mental fog is melting to clarity, mingling with your panicked nerves, and the little laugh that leaves you makes the ache in your side twinge.Â
âI mean, come on,â Heâs leaning against the railing now, seemingly unaware or uncaring of the looks that the nurses are giving him, âAll of this, just to get my attention?âÂ
âYouâre so full of yourself.âÂ
âAnd you know what youâre gonna be full of if we donât get that appendix out? Pus.âÂ
âUgh,â You wrinkle your nose, closing your eyes, âStop.âÂ
âBetter pus than Darth Vader, though.âÂ
You laugh again, and the pain swells, worse.Â
âPlease stop making me laugh, it hurts,â You whimper, and he mutters, âAlright, alright,â as the elevator chimes. You pull in as deep a breath as you can, the full weight of panic weighing down your chest. You swallow roughly, mumble, âJohn?âÂ
âYeah?âÂ
âMake sure they give me the good stuff.â When you open your eyes, take in the sweep of lights haloing him as youâre guided down another hall, you find him smiling softly.Â
âFor you? The best,â He promises. âIâll tell them to check on your funny bone while theyâre in there.âÂ
Your laugh turns to a muted sob, the sound half-stuck in your thickening throat as tears spill over. But heâs reaching out before one can slip to the gurney below, swiping it away.Â
âIâm scared,â You whisper.
âI know. But itâs gonna be okay.âÂ
--Â
âI like him.âÂ
It was the last thing you expected to come out of Lilahâs mouth. Youâd already known that she was miffed at you for taking so long to introduce you to John, doubly so when she found out that Lisa had met him nearly two weeks before she had (that had been an accident, thoughâLisa had come home early from what was meant to be a romantic trip with her latest boyfriend, but had crashed and burned into a fight when she found out she was the other woman).Â
You didnât answer, just watched Lilah from your end of the couch as she picked her nails. When she glanced toward you, she scoffed, âWhat?â
âIâm waiting.âÂ
âFor?âÂ
âThe punchline.âÂ
Lilah rolled her eyes. âNo punchline. I like him.âÂ
Your brows rose at the insistence. âThatâs a first.âÂ
âWell,â She sighed, pushing herself up, âAll of your other boyfriends sucked. Iâm gonna raid your fridge now.âÂ
You watched her go, processing for a moment before you followed. âWhat do you mean, all of my other boyfriends sucked?âÂ
Lilah shrugged, eyes set on the inside of your fridge, scanning the shelves lazily.Â
âJust what I said.âÂ
âThey were all nice guys.âÂ
âNo, they were all assholes.âÂ
You scoffed, âThey were not all assholes.âÂ
âFine. They were mostly dickheads, with one or two of them crossing firmly into asshole territory.âÂ
âThey were all accomplished.âÂ
âYeah,â Lilah laughed derisively, âEspecially that dude that got nailed for insider trading. Howâs his prison sentence going by the way?âÂ
You folded your arms tightly across your chest. âHe was only fined and you know it.âÂ
âRight, right.âÂ
âWould you close the fridge door if youâre not gonna take anything? Youâre letting all the cold out.âÂ
Lilah raised her hands in surrender, allowing the door to slowly swing shut before she turned to your cabinet.Â
âAs I was saying,â You added, âThey were not all dickheads. I prefer to surround myself with ambitious people, and they can beâŚDifficult.âÂ
âIf by ambitious you mean rich, then yeah, youâre usually all over âem.âÂ
âThat is not what I meanââÂ
âHedge fund managers, healthtech douchebros, morons who insist that theyâre practically liquid when their entire net worth is in crypto.âÂ
âThat was one guy!â
âYou know why I like John?â Lilah leaned back to face you, bag of chips in hand. âCause itâs like youâre not dating with mom and dad in mind for once.âÂ
It was like a slap. It rendered you completely speechless, sending heat creeping across your face, down your neck. And you couldnât tell if Lilah knew the effect the comment had, but she pushed on:Â
âJohnâs ambitious, sure, heâs a doctor, but heâs also, like, genuinely a nice dude, you know. And youâre not trying to be perfect for him the way that you usually do for your dates, or for mom and dad. Youâre not preening or constantly fixing your hair or checking your posture with him. Youâre just, likeâŚYou. Itâs good. Kinda freaky, but good.â She popped a couple of chips in her mouth, chewing slowly as you both mulled that over.Â
âAnyway,â She shrugged, pushing off of the counter, âOnly a matter of time before you fuck it up, so. Enjoy it while it lasts.âÂ
You rolled your eyes, following her back into the living room. âThanks for the vote of confidence, bean.âÂ
âAnytime, generalissimo.âÂ
--Â
Coming to is slow, and uncomfortable. Youâre propped up in bed, the room is bright, even with your eyes closed, and the beeping monitor beside you is starting to get annoyingâbut can you really begrudge something that reminds you that youâre alive?Â
You open your eyes, wincing into the light and allowing your vision to adjust. You can see a duffel bag on the chairs across from you, spot coats laying over the back of those same chairs. And when you let yourself glance around, you find someone at your bedside.Â
John is seated, folded over your bed with his head pillowed on his arms. His eyes are closed, and heâs breathing steadily. You canât tell if itâs light outside with the shades closed, so you reach your IV-laden hand out, tapping on the face of the smart watch you got him a couple of Christmases ago. The screen flashes, but not in time for you to get a good look. Youâre about to tap again, butâ
âAre you snooping through my messages?âÂ
Groggy, soft, warmâthereâs that sleep-roughened voice youâve missed so much. You smile a little.Â
âNo. Trying to see what time it is.âÂ
âMm,â John pushes himself to sit up and proffers his wrist, scrubbing his free hand across his eyes as you get a better look. Nearly half past eight.Â
âMaybe a silly question, but is it AM or PM?â
âAM,â He chuckles, lowering his wrist.
âShouldnât you be home?â You ask. But before he can answer, the door to your hospital room opens, and Lisa and Lilah are trailing in with cups of coffee in hand.Â
âYouâre up!â Lisa screeches, hurrying forward so quickly that some coffee sloshes over the side of the little paper cup. Lilahâs joining her a moment later, crowding in against you with leans, hugs, and carefully placed hands. You begin to reach for them with both arms, but wince when your IV pulls slightly. Lisa steps back, allowing Lilah to lean into you more closely.Â
âDid you grab my phone?â You ask, âAnd did you callâŚYou know?âÂ
âWe didnât,â Lisa winces, âWe werenât sureââÂ
âNo, no. You did the right thing,â You soothe before glancing at Lilah. Her smile is watery, thin, and she seems to be opening her mouth to start to say something, but you have to ask:Â
âDid you bring my work laptop?âÂ
That watery thin smile is gone in a second, mouth flat. Her eyes seem to glaze over, hands drawing back and curling into fists at her sides.Â
âIâNo.âÂ
âLilah,â You groan, âThat was, like, the one thing I asked you to bringââ
You barely get it out before sheâs stomping out of your hospital room, Lisa hot on her heels, swearing, âIâll get her.âÂ
You close your eyes, sinking back in your bed. âShit.âÂ
âYou shouldnât be working right now, anyway,â John warns. You peek one eye open, frowning as he rounds the bed, pouring water from a pitcher on the bedside table. âHere.âÂ
You take the cup carefully, though John keeps a loose grasp on it as you take a sip. He sets it aside once youâre finished, offering, âYou want some more?âÂ
âNn-nn,â You shake your head. You perk up as the door opens again, but Lilahâs sweeping in and grabbing her coat without looking at you.Â
âBean, Iâm sorryâHey!â You call out as she turns away again, âIâm not mad at you!â But your protests seem to fall on deaf ears as she rounds back into the hall. You close your eyes, tipping your head back against the pillows. âGreat.âÂ
âYou want me to go get her?âÂ
âNo. Lisaâs gonna try to do that, anyway. And when sheâs pissed at me, Lilah needs time to justâŚDecompress. Trust me,â You huff a laugh, âIâve pissed her off a lot.â You tip your head to the side, wiggling your fingers toward his hand. And you expect him to just take it and hold on, but John is climbing into bed with you, carefully nestling against you. You sigh softly, turning your head and nuzzling against his neck. Neither of you speak for a few moments, the room falling into quiet, save for the beep of the monitor beside your bed.Â
â...Shouldnât you be home?â You finally ask again.Â
âMmâŚYou want me to go?âÂ
âNo.âÂ
âThen Iâm right where I should be.âÂ
And itâs so gentle, and firm, and certain. Your eyes well with tears again, and you try to squeeze tight against them, to hold them back, but theyâre slipping before you can stop them. John doesnât tut, tell you that itâs alright, that youâre okay. He just cuddles closer, intertwining your fingers.Â
âWhen Iâm, um,â You sniffle, âWhen Iâm less of a mess, can you explain what happened? Like, properly?âÂ
âUsing all of my big brain and science-y knowledge? Sure I can. Dr. Garcia will probably come to speak with you, too.âÂ
âDid they do the surgery?â
âNo, Dr. Walsh did. Case got handed over to the day shift, though.âÂ
âOh.âÂ
â...So next time you want my attention, Iâm thinking a kidney stone could be the way to go.â He keeps on over your quiet gigglesââGetting rid of those is way more fun than an appendix. Hey, whenâs the last time you were on a roller coaster?âÂ
--Â Â
Itâs nearly ten by the time John is leaving your room with a kiss on the forehead and a promise to check in with you over the next couple of days. Lisa is back, but the two of you are speaking little. She wonât tell you where Lilah is, or what she said when she stormed out. You fall asleep around noon.Â
When you wake up around two, your work laptop is sitting on top of your duffel bag, and Lilah is nowhere to be seen.
--Â
You canât remember the last time Lisa played nurse maid to you like this. You try to think of it, but youâre coming up withâŚWell, never. On the odd occasion youâve gotten sick, youâve always managed it yourselfâbut this isnât just getting sick.Â
You can get around on your own, but itâs not the most comfortable. Lisa emails her professors, lets them know what happened, gets a pass to skip a couple of her classes so that she can stay at home and look after you for a couple of days. She helps you clean and change your wound dressing so that you donât have to twist, or look at the little laparoscopic scars any more than you have to. She even offers to help you inject the prescribed blood thinner, but you insist on doing that yourself. Itâs a way of taking back just a little bit of control after youâve spent so much of the last 72 hours feeling helpless.Â
Besides, youâre usually the one doing the minding, so being minded makes you feel unbalanced.
Your manager gives you the week off to heal, tells you not to worry about the presentations and reports, commends you for the work that you were able to get done, and insists that if she sees your status active on your laptop, sheâs going to have IT lock you out.Â
You try texting Lilah a few times, and she doesnât answer, save to react or send lone emojis. You donât try to call, or FaceTime. Youâre not sure where youâd start if you did.Â
So when Lisa tells you the next day that Lilahâs at the apartment, and that sheâs sitting on your unitâs balcony, itâs sort of a relief.Â
--Â
You know those things are bad for you.Â
It sits on your tongue, but you hold it there. The fact that Lilah is there at all is a boon, so you do your best to pointedly ignore the smoke curling from the end of her cigarette.Â
âI thought you were gonna die, you know?âÂ
It cracks the air open, splits you down the middle, but Lilah doesnât stop there:Â
âIâd never seen you like that. My superhero of a sister, on the floor, justâŚLaid out. When Lisa was getting into the ambulance with you and I stayed to grab some stuff like you asked, I was just like, on autopilot. Clothes, medication, phone, keys. The important shit, you know? And then I got to the wrong hospital and Lisa called, and I was like âwell, shit. Iâm not gonna get to say goodbye.â And then you were in surgery, and then you were out, and then you woke up,â Her voice lilts with a hysterical little laugh, âAnd your first question was where your fucking work laptop was, and that was when I remembered that you asked for it. And I was like âwell fuck. I fucked up again.ââ Lilah quiets as she takes another drag from the cigarette, but for all the comments buzzing against your lips, you wait.
âYou know what I think?â She exhales, âWhat this was? God or the universe, or fucking whateverâitâs telling you to slow down.â She turns her head to look at you finally, bloodshot gaze pinning you in place. âBecause your first question coming out of major surgery should be what happened, how long was I out, what are the next steps, not where your fucking work laptop isââ
âI know.âÂ
âLike thatâs psychotic. And the worst part is you canât even blame the meds, like, youâre just like that.âÂ
âI know.â You pull in a deep breath, just managing not to wrinkle your nose at the scent of smoke. âIâm sorry, bean. I shouldnât have said thatâand youâre right, I canât even blame the anesthesia.â You shift your seat a little closer, nudging her knee with yours. âI didnât mean to scare you.â
â...Well, you didnât. Your bitch-ass appendix did.âÂ
You snort, looping your arm around Lilahâs shoulders and drawing her in.Â
âI love you, bean.âÂ
Lilah sniffles as she huddles closer, tucking her head beneath your chin.Â
âI love you, too, generalissimo.âÂ
--Â
âSaw Lilah on the way in.âÂ
âYeah?â You sit against the mountain of pillows still against your headboard, watch John unpack a few things from his bag onto your bedâgloves, gauze, tape, small scissors, alcohol wipes.
âEverything okay?âÂ
â...Fine,â You concede, âShe just has a shitty sister.âÂ
You can feel John glancing toward you as you carefully wriggle out of your loose shirt, leaving you in a sports bra.Â
âOkay, letâs see what we have here.âÂ
You hold carefully still as John peels back your wound dressing, leaning in to get a better look at the scars.Â
âHowâs the pain been?âÂ
âFine, I guess. The gas pain in my shoulders sucks, though.âÂ
âYeah, thatâs from the CO2 they use to inflate the abdominal cavity.âÂ
âHate the use of âcavityâ there.âÂ
Johnâs lips quirk with a smile. âWounds look good, no irritation or excessive redness.âÂ
âLisaâs been a very good nurse.âÂ
âMm.â John opens an alcohol wipe, carefully cleaning your wounds. âHas it been itchy at all?âÂ
âNot really.âÂ
âGoodâŚA heating pad should help with those gas pains, by the way.âÂ
âOkay.âÂ
The two of you go quiet as he rebandages your wounds, then straightens.
âNo fever, chills?âÂ
âNn-nn.â
âAppetiteâs back?âÂ
âMostly.âÂ
âGood.â John sits on the edge of the bed, removing his gloves and dropping the old dressing and alcohol wipe into the (now cleaned) bin by your bed. âWhen we were in the hospital, Lisa said you were sick all day. Whyâd you wait so long to come in?âÂ
âJustâŚâ You shrug. âI thought it was my period.âÂ
âYour cramps are that bad?âÂ
âThey can be.âÂ
âYeesh,â He mutters, tucking a few supplies into his bag. âWhen are you due back for your check-up, remind me?âÂ
âFriday.âÂ
âOkay.âÂ
The two of you fall into quiet, and when you reach out for Johnâs hand, he slips it warmly into yours.Â
â...Whatâd your parents say?âÂ
You focus on the press of his palm, trace the length of a vein on the back of his hand.Â
âI havenât told them yet.â Your eyes flicker to his incredulous frown, and you shake your head. âItâs kinda too late now. I meanâIâll tell them eventually. At this point theyâll just be upset that they werenât invited.âÂ
âInvited?â He scoffs. âIt wasnât a birthday party.âÂ
âYou know what I mean. I shouldâve told them when I was on my way to the hospital, but I didnât, and neither did the girls, soâŚNow this gets to be that funny story I tell them on New Yearâs Eve in two yearâs time, when theyâre good and buzzed and less likely to get mad at me for not telling them right when it happened.âÂ
âSounds like you already have it all planned out.âÂ
âI like a plan, remember?âÂ
John smiles, thumb sweeping across the soft of your wrist. âI remember.â Itâs a moment before he hedges: âRemind me, is that why we broke up? Not enough plans?âÂ
You sigh softly, eyes dropping to your hands. âThat was some of it. Other times, I justâŚI felt like you were making jokes of everything, all the time, or not taking things seriously. But honestly, after the whole,â You wave toward your abdomen, âYou know, how chaotic it was, how scaryâŚI kinda get it now. Why youâre so level.â
â...Doesnât mean I should be doing it all the time. Iâm sorry if I made you feel like we couldnât just have a serious conversation.âÂ
You smile. âIâm sorry I was so rigid. I shouldâve been more understanding.âÂ
âHindsightâs 20/20, huh?âÂ
âFamously.âÂ
John gives your hand a little squeeze. âI should let you rest.âÂ
âOkayâŚCan I selfishly say that I donât want you to leave yet?âÂ
âYes,â He chuckles. âTell you what. Iâll stick around for a bit, keep close. Make sure you donât roll over in your sleep.âÂ
âOh yeah? You do that for all your patients, Dr. Shen?âÂ
âOh, all of them.âÂ
âYou really know how to make a girl feel spesh.â
John chuckles, nudging off the house shoes heâd worn inside and climbing into bed beside you, resting his hand on your hip. You tipped your head against him, relaxing into the warmth of his body as you had just a few days ago.Â
âWould it be selfish of me to say that I missed you a lot?â You mumbled.Â
âThereâs that word again.âÂ
âHmm?âÂ
âSelfish.â You feel John tip his head toward you. âWanting things isnât selfish. Neither is feeling things.âÂ
You gnaw on your lower lip, letting your gaze drop back to his chest. He smoothes his hand over your hair, drawing you carefully closer.Â
âTell you what,â He murmurs, âWeâre gonna talk about this laterâfor now, you need your rest.âÂ
âWhen are we gonna talk about it?â
âThis weekend.âÂ
âOh?âÂ
âMhm. Youâre gonna get clearance from Walsh to resume normal food and activity on Friday, weâre gonna get coffee and go for a nice, easy walk on SaturdayââÂ
âI seeââ
âAnd weâre gonna clear up all this selfish talk.âÂ
âAnd then what?âÂ
âOh, just you wait.âÂ
âDo I get a hint?âÂ
John tips his head down toward you, lips brushing your forehead.Â
âYou thought that first go-around was something? Iâm gonna date the crap out of you.âÂ
You smile. âIâd rather our dating not have anything to do with crap.âÂ

ryomen sukuna secretly loves taking care of his sweet wife! 𣲠.⌠ÝË Űśŕ§
modern-day sukuna x reader, fluff, heâs whipped (but tries not to show it), may be very ooc sorryđ | wc 1.3k
youâre stood in the kitchen in sukunaâs hoodie, his worn black one that you stole borrowed as you finish off plating up dinner. youâre talking animatedly about your day as sukunaâs arms rest around your body, his chin resting on your shoulder and strands of spiky pink hair rubbing against your cheek as you speak.
âand in the second season they totally ruined the original plot â can you even believe that?â
he nods imperceptibly in silent confirmation, deep red eyes fixed on your soft hands, on each movement you make as you turn off the stove and pick up one of the plates. despite that, he stays fixed where he is, hands still clasped over the oversized hoodie youâre wearing, the fabric bunched up under his fingers.
you playfully nudged his cheek with your hand.
âryo, i need to take this to the table.â
âmhmm.â
slowly, reluctantly, sukuna lets go, his hands leaving their spot on your stomach before he makes his way to the kitchen table. you slip into the seat across from him, placing the plates down in front of you and continuing your ramble.
âbut anyway, since weâre starting with season one itâll probably be fine! itâs my favourite series but also i never ended up watching the latest season soââ
youâre cut off by a piece of food held up to your mouth. you glance up to see red eyes boring into yours, features smooth, sukunaâs expression almost bordering stern if you really squint.
you pull your face back just slightly, meeting his almost bored-looking gaze, your lips parted and brows raised.
ââŚumâŚryomenâŚ?â
âeat. itâs getting cold.â
âohâŚthank you! but..i can eat by myself too?â
he rolls his eyes, nudging the potato against your lip more insistently before you finally part your lips to accept it.
â..thanks, ryo.â
he mutters something under his breath about how you âcanât remember to take care of yourself on your ownâ before then gruffly prompting you to continue what you had been saying, occasionally reminding you to eat by putting a forkful of food to your mouth once more.
-
itâs also become a common habit for him to let you pick the movie you both watch each evening. youâre curled up on the sofa as usual, head propped against his shoulder, feet tucked under the blanket as you occasionally lean your head further into the fabric of his hoodie with a teasing grin, as though trying to test how much more you can intrude into his personal space (or by this point his lack thereof) before he finally snaps.
he lets out a tiny grunt, a sound youâd almost mistake for annoyance if it werenât for the fact that he then leans imperceptibly towards you, lowering his shoulder a little to make it easier for you to rest your head on it without straining your neck.
you smile to yourself at that, sneaking a glance up at your husbandâs face, observing the way his jaw is set tight and his eyes are fixed firmly forward in an attempt to avoid your teasing grin. he simply stays staring at the tv ahead, focus fixed on nothing in particular as he waits for you to avert your intent gaze.
after a few moments, he finally gives in to your constant staring, turning to face you before speaking, voice rough with fake-irritation: despite his gruff tone, his words are undeniably laced with the slightest undertone of fondness â almost imperceptible, but there nonetheless.
âare you gonna choose the movie already or not?â he mutters under his breath, voice harsh. despite that, its slight coarseness is undeniably softened a fraction when aimed towards you, making your heart twist a little in fondness.
âyep!â you flick through your options quickly before settling on your favourite cheesy 2000s movie as always.
he lets out a low scoff, unsurprised by the repetitiveness by now but amused regardless, lip curling into a small smirk as he studies the way youâre looking up at him, a bright smile on your face.
ââŚ.again? donât you ever get sick of the same movie all the time?â
when you shake your head insistently, he simply inspects your features â eyes bright and eager, sweetly waiting for him to react â and then sighs, rolling his eyes before propping his arm around your shoulder, quietly accepting defeat. by now, he could probably quote each line word-for-word from rewatching this same movie every single week, but he sighs and fixes his attention on the opening scene nonetheless.
-
and on days when youâre unwell, heâs practically stuck to your side, though he absolutely denies it.
he spends the day basically hovering over you, trying to frame his obvious simmering concern as simple frustration towards your self-neglect.
âdrink.â he taps the teacup before bringing it to your lips, eyes narrowing as you cough weakly once more.
ââŚtastes weird. and itâs too hot.â you stick out your tongue, wincing at the burning sensation. clearly, your husband didnât think to let the tea cool down before serving you it, too busy and concerned â though heâd absolutely deny that fact if you asked him about it â to wait even a second for it to cool down.
he groans at your words, running a hand through his hair in frustration, spiky strands left messy and unkempt. his shoulders are slumped and his brows are furrowed just slightly, the usual sharp edges of his face blurred into something just a little bit softer. the sight of your usually composed husband â made up of his usual sharp features and his unforgiving scowl â now softened so drastically leaves you stifling a weak half-laugh.
he blows the tea quickly, actions rough and hasty.
âso picky. here, now drink.â once more the teacup meets your lips, him eyeing you wearily as you finally take a small sip.
he also decides not to mention the fact that he specifically looked up specific herbs to help soothe you.
-
20 minutes later, and youâve practically glued yourself to him. youâre clinging to his arm, leaning into his warmth entirely.
âryooo,â you whine, the side of your face smushed against his body and your eyes pressed shut. âiâm so cold!â
ââŚtwo seconds ago you said you were hot.â
he sits up, trying to escape your tight grasp on his arm to go retrieve the sweater and blanket he only just helped you take off, but instead you shake your head, your grip tightening impossibly more on his arm.
âno waitâŚdonât go.â
âso what do you want me to do?â
ââŚumâŚâ you unweave your arms from his, pulling back and blinking with hazy eyes to try to make out his face through the blur of thick exhaustion. with much effort, you pry open his crossed arms, outstretching them for him before allowing yourself to slip into his grasp.
he pauses, momentarily stunned before letting a tiny, barely-visible smirk form on his face, his head lowering to press a quick kiss to the top of your hair whilst your face is pressed against his chest. itâs quick, barely there, as though heâs half-hoping it wonât be noticeable, hidden by the hazy state youâre in from your sickness and the dim lighting of the room around him. now, his actions are quieter, rawer in a way you donât normally see from sukuna. his hand remains firmly fixed on the back of your head, keeping your face buried against his chest as though to prevent you from pulling back and seeing him in such a sappy state. what he doesnât realise is that youâre already smiling into the fabric of his hoodie at his failed attempt at hiding his affection.
he stays like that for a few moments, as though contemplating what to say or do. his free hand, the one that isnât currently burying your face into his hoodie, has absentmindedly stilled on your back, and he studies the way youâre curled up in his arms for a second before murmuring fondly.
ââŚbrat. always getting what you want.â
when you finally weave your way out of his grasp just slightly and glance up at his face once more, you find that his gaze is averted once more, lips pressed tight and brows furrowed into a stoic, unimpressed expression.
you decide not to push for an answer, but you smile to yourself imperceptibly as you feel his grasp on you tighten just a fraction more.

sigh, i know this can be seen as toxic sometimes, but...
sukuna always fixing your clothes when you're out.
pulling your top up with a big unapologetic hand when it dips too low, giving a generous view of your breasts.
pulling your skirt down and coming to stand behind you when you bend over carelessly, almost flashing everyone around you.
you can certainly wear whatever you want, he doesn't control you, but there are limits.
"you tryna give everyone a free show or something?"
you smile up at him, carefree, tilting your head all cute. "you'd never let that happen, baby."
"tch." he rolls his eyes playfully, trying to hide his smirk as he slides his arm around your waist, pride filling his chest as he scans the room, sure to scare anyone off that looks at you for too long.
itâs a normal day. youâre with your boyfriend, as usual, except heâs acting a little odd. not quite meeting your gaze, dark eyes staring at your lips.
âwhatâs wrong?â you look up from the ice cream he had offered you a minute ago. âsomething on my face?â
âyeah,â he murmurs. âiâll get it for you.â
and you expected him to maybe wipe your cheek with a napkin, or his thumb. anything but for him to lick a drop of melted mint chocolate ice cream off the corner of your lip. you blink as his cold tongue runs over you, sending a shiver down your body.
wait, cold? but he didnât eat any-
âhey!â you squeak. âwhatâre you-â
the audacity of him to smirk at you as he tilts your head up, forcing you to look at him. flustered, you freeze, unsure of what heâs planning.Â
and then his lips meet yours and you gasp. the feeling was new: sharp, metallic, and utterly devastating.
he pulls back suddenly, breaking the kiss.Â
âwhaâŚhow?â you stutter. he sticks out his tongue at you. oh. you see it then, the silvery ball in between his tongue. the fucker got a tongue piercing behind your back.
âyou like?â your boyfriend grins wide.Â
instead of answering, you kiss him again.Â

Synopsis: Sukuna gets jealous of a toddler, gets babied against his will, and accidentally humiliates himself in front of his brother. Yuji enjoys every second of it.
âWhoâs my good baby?â you coo, smiling as you hold little Yuji on your lap like heâs still tiny enough to fit in one arm.
âMe!â Yuji shouts immediately, throwing both of his hands into the air with the biggest grin on his face, proud and excited like heâd been waiting for that exact question all day.
You laugh softly. âYes, you are.â
You attack his cheeks and neck with kisses, holding him so tightly it borders on excessive. Yuji squirms in your arms, giggling uncontrollably as he tries to hide from the kisses behind his tiny hands, his face turning red from laughing so hard.
âStohooopâ!â he squeals between breaths.
âNo. Never,â you say dramatically before kissing his forehead again.
From the other side of the couch, Sukuna watches the entire thing with his usual irritated expression, one arm stretched across the backrest while his fingers tap impatiently against the sofa cushion.
For the last thirty minutes, itâs been nothing but you and Yuji laughing, cuddling, talking nonsense, and completely ignoring him.
You were at Jinâs house for dinner while Jin prepared the grill outside in the yard.
Unfortunately for Sukuna, the moment you stepped into the house, all your attention immediately went to Yuji.
âHeâs not a baby anymore,â Sukuna mutters dryly, finally interrupting the laughter. âStop saying that. Youâre gonna turn him into even more of a crybaby.â
The room instantly goes quiet.
You slowly turn your head toward your husband with exaggerated shock written all over your face.
Yuji does the same from your lap, eyes wide like Sukuna had just personally insulted his entire bloodline.
âOh my god,â you gasp softly, pulling Yuji protectively against your chest. âDid you hear what your uncle just said to you?â
Yuji immediately catches on, wrapping his little arms around you and hiding against you dramatically with the saddest pout he can manage.
The two of you are unbelievably dramatic.
âDonât listen to him,â you whisper to Yuji while glaring at Sukuna. âHeâs just jealous and grumpy.â
Yuji peeks over your shoulder toward Sukuna.
âYouâll always be a baby, right?â you ask gently, cupping his cheeks before kissing his forehead.
Yuji nods without hesitation, still pouting for effect before resting his head back against you like heâd just suffered emotional damage.
And honestly? Even if Yuji wasnât technically a baby anymoreâalready three years old somehowâyou still couldnât help it.
He was too cute.
Sukuna lets out a sarcastic laugh from across the couch.
âJealous?â he repeats. âWhy the hell would I be jealous of a kid who still canât even use the bathroom properly?â
You narrow your eyes at your husband, even though youâre clearly fighting back a smile.
âOf course he canât, you idiot,â you say slowly, emphasizing every word like Sukuna was the dumb one here. âHeâs just a baby.â
Yuji immediately bursts into laughter at the word idiot, nearly falling sideways against you.
Sukuna clicks his tongue in annoyance, but you donât miss the way his eyes linger on the two of you for a second too long.
Because as much as he complains, as much as he rolls his eyes and acts botheredâ
heâs been staring at you the entire time.
âOkay, thatâs enough, brat. We have to take you back to your dad,â Sukuna says as he finally gets up from the couch, clearly done with being ignored.
The moment he reaches for Yuji, the little boy clings to you even tighter than before.
âNo, no, no!â Yuji whines, wrapping his tiny arms around your neck with surprising strength for a three-year-old.
Honestly, you almost laugh.
Sukuna has been sulking for the past half hour just because your attention hasnât been on him for more than five seconds.
Yuji buries his face against your shoulder dramatically, holding onto you like Sukunaâs trying to drag him into battle instead of across the living room.
You gently rub his back before standing up with him still on your hip.
âI know what your uncle needs, Yuji,â you say thoughtfully, looking down at him.
Sukuna immediately narrows his eyes.
ââŚWhat does that mean?â
You donât answer.
Instead, you walk over to the couch and carefully place Yuji where Sukuna had been sitting seconds ago. Yuji obediently stays there, small hands resting on his lap as he watches you with that soft, curious expression he always has.
Then you sit back down in your original spot and pat the space beside you.
âCome here.â
Sukuna looks at you suspiciously.
âWhat are you planningââ
âSit down.â
He clicks his tongue in annoyance, but after a few seconds of staring, he gives in and drops down beside you with a grumble.
The second he does, your arms wrap around him.
Sukuna stiffens immediately as you pull him against your chest, holding him close the exact same way youâd been holding Yuji all afternoon.
âWhat the hellââ
You cup his face before he can pull away, forcing him to look at you.
âOhhh,â you coo softly, using the same sweet voice from earlier. âYou needed attention too, huh?â
Across from you, Yuji gasps quietly like heâs witnessing something incredible.
âYou wanna be spoiled too?â you continue teasingly, pressing kisses all over Sukunaâs face before he can escape. âYou need love too, baby?â
âStop.â
Sukuna tries shoving you away, but itâs weak. Half-hearted.
Because if he actually wanted to get away from you, he wouldâve already done it.
Instead, he stays there trapped in your arms while you continue smothering him with affection.
You hug him tighter around the neck, rocking him slightly against your chest just to make it worse.
âWhoâs a good boy?â you ask dramatically.
Yuji immediately points at Sukuna from the couch.
âHim!â
You nearly burst out laughing.
âYes, him,â you say proudly before squishing Sukunaâs cheeks between your hands again. âItâs you, Ryo, isnât it? Youâre the good boy.â
Sukunaâs face twists into a deep frown, though thereâs the faintest hint of red creeping across his ears now.
âLet go of me,â he mutters.
âNooo,â you mimic Yujiâs earlier tone.
Yuji starts laughing so hard he almost falls sideways into the couch cushions.
And somehow, that only makes Sukuna look even more offended.
âYou have to say it back too,â you insist, holding Sukunaâs chin between your fingers before glancing over at Yuji. âJust like Yuji does, right?â
Yuji nods enthusiastically from his spot on the couch, completely invested in his uncleâs humiliation.
âYes!â he chirps happily.
You keep using that unbearably sweet baby voice on purpose, making every word more exaggerated than the last just to irritate Sukuna further.
And judging by the deepening crease between his brows, itâs working perfectly.
âCome on,â you tease. âSay it.â
Sukuna stares at you in silence.
You point dramatically at your lips, pouting slightly. âTell me youâre a good boy and give me a kiss.â
Yuji gasps like this is the most important moment of his life.
Sukuna finally snaps.
Before you can laugh again, he suddenly grabs both your wrists and pushes you back onto the couch. A surprised yelp leaves your lips as you land awkwardly against the cushions, one leg still hanging off the side of the couch while the other bends underneath you.
Your wrists are pinned beside your head.
Sukuna hovers above you, one knee pressed into the couch between your legs while the other foot stays planted on the floor for balance.
âThere,â he mutters darkly. âHappy now?â
Despite the glare heâs giving you, thereâs still that faint blush spreading across the tips of his ears.
He leans down to kiss youâ
but you immediately turn your head away with a smug grin.
âNope.â
Sukuna pauses.
âNo kiss unless you say it,â you sing teasingly. âThatâs what bad boys get.â
Even saying it makes you cringe a little, but the look on Sukunaâs face is absolutely worth it.
âYouâre insane if you think Iâm saying that shit,â he grumbles, trying again to kiss you.
You dodge him once more, shaking your head dramatically.
âNope.â
He tries again.
You dodge him with a smug grin.
Sukuna lets out an irritated click of his tongue, growing visibly more annoyed every second you deny him.
Meanwhile, Yuji is sitting there kicking his little feet against the couch cushions, watching the whole thing like live entertainment.
Finally, Sukuna gives up with a long, suffering sigh.
âFine,â he mutters through gritted teeth. âIâm a⌠good⌠boy.â
He says it so quietly itâs almost embarrassing.
Almost.
The second the words leave his mouth, you burst into laughter.
Yuji immediately joins in, laughing just as hard despite probably not fully understanding why anymore.
Sukuna looks genuinely offended.
âShut up,â he mutters before finally managing to catch your lips in a quick kiss.
Then another.
And another.
Little impatient kisses meant to shut you up more than anything else.
Unfortunately for him, they only make you laugh harder.
âI hope Yuji remembers this forever,â you wheeze, clutching your stomach dramatically from laughing too much.
âIâm gonna kill you.â
âYou already called yourself a good boy in front of a toddler. Itâs over for you.â
Before Sukuna can retaliate, another voice suddenly cuts through the room.
âWhat the hell are you two doing?â
Everything freezes.
You and Sukuna both turn at the same time toward the doorway.
Jin stands there holding a plate in one hand, staring at the scene in complete disbelief.
Sukuna practically jumps away from you.
âYou have Yuji right there,â Jin says slowly, clearly trying to process whatever horrifying thing he just walked into. âCan you save your weird things for literally any other time?â
Yuji waves happily at his dad from the couch.
âUnc Kuna good boy!â he announces proudly.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
You immediately bury your face into the couch cushion to stop yourself from screaming with laughter.
Meanwhile, Sukuna looks genuinely ready to die from humiliation.
The red spreading across his ears quickly travels down his neck.
âCome on, Yuji,â Jin sighs, walking over to pick him up. âDinnerâs ready.â
Yuji raises his arms happily to be carried.
As Jin heads back toward the yard, he gives Sukuna one last judgmental look.
âAnd I donât wanna see whatever the hell this is again.â
The second they disappear outside, you lose it completely.
Your laughter fills the room again while Sukuna stands there rubbing a hand down his face in humiliation.
âI canât believe I said that shit out loud.â he mutters.
Youâre still laughing when he suddenly turns toward you.
That embarrassed expression slowly twists into something more dangerous. More mischievous.
Your laughter falters slightly.
Sukuna leans down close enough for his breath to brush against your ear.
âYou think this is funny now?â he murmurs.
The low tone of his voice sends a shiver straight down your spine.
âWhen we get home,â he whispers, âweâll see now who the good girl is.â
Then, like he hadnât just threatened your entire existence, he presses a soft, innocent kiss against your cheek.
Reblogs and likes are super appreciated đ thank you for reading!
a/n: I wanna try writing other characters too but honestly I have no idea if I can actually capture their personalities properly đ Sukuna is just⌠Sukuna. Heâs way too easy for me to write because his whole vibe is already loud, chaotic, and unhinged in my brain.
Also I would LOVE to write about true form Sukuna I swear when I think about him I lose all sense of productivity and suddenly Iâm just like đśâđŤď¸ anyway.
BUT I am still learning how to write smut (pls be nice to me đ) and I feel like adding multiple limbs into the equation does NOT make it easier helpâ
so yeah Iâm trying my best. please be patient with me while I slowly descend into the fanfic writings.
You stifled your laugh as you blinked up at a very pouty, very red Satoru.
âDon't laugh at me.â He grumbled as he waddled over to you, carefully sitting himself down on the edge of the bathtub in front of you. In your hands was a tube of aloe vera gel, ready to soothe your husband's sunburnt skin. Satoru let out a long sigh before explaining himself, âYou see, Nanami went to Malaysia and he got a nice tan, and Suguru is always tan I mean have you seen his complexion? It's like he lives under the sun!â
You sighed in response, shaking your head as you lathered up some of the gel in your hands. âThat doesn't explain why you look like a dried-up lobster.â
âHey!â
âA crispy one, too.â Satoru pouted, crossing his arms â hissing at the contact and ultimately unfolding them again. âThat is just cruel.â
âAnyway, sweets ââ he continued as you began to soothe the gel over his arms, ââ I wanted to get my tan in too. But apparently I can't tan, or maybe I put too much tanning lotion on.â He pondered for a few seconds, bringing his hand to his face to lean into his palm before flinching away with a small âow!â
âHold still you idiot, let me apply the gel and move your blindfold up.â You scolded him, hands reaching to soothe the aloe over his face next. âNo! You're going to rub it in too hard â it'll hurt!â He recoiled as if you were holding an axe.
âDon't be a baby Toru, and I told you to move the blindfold.â
Satoru fiddled with his fingers for a few seconds, anxiously biting his lip. You were about to rip the blindfold off of him but then he finally began to peel the black fabric back into his hairline slowly.
âOh my god.â
He tried to turn away but you stopped him. Satoruâs eye area was completely safe from any sunburn â which was good â but he was left with what would turn into a very ridiculous tan line. âOh my goodness, Toru, what on earth have you done?â You heaved with laughter, arm clutching your stomach as you doubled over.
âYeah yeah, laugh it up.â He rolled his bright blue eyes, milky hair falling over his eyes as he shook his head. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry! You just look so funny.â He gasped dramatically at your words, hand clutching his chest â and flinching at the burn â as if he were about to have a heart attack. âGah! How could you say that to me? Especially in my injured state.â
You began to massage the gel into his neck and chest making sure not to press too hard into his skin. Satoru continued sulking and jerking at your touch, claiming you were âbeing too rough with his delicate skin.â You could only scoff at him in return.
âHey, how did the UV even get past your infinity, don't tell me you've turned it off.â
Your husband flashed you a sheepish grin, bright eyes sparkling under the fluorescent bathroom light. You landed a light smack to his shoulder causing him to wince in pain, âHey! God forbid a guy wants to catch some rays.â You groaned at his words, âNever say that again, I will divorce you.â He only hummed in response, nuzzling himself further into your touch.
âYou love me really.â You scoffed at him, soothing another layer of aloe across his arms.
âUnfortunately, I do.â
a/n: sorry this is short I have to many ideas rn and this was the one that didn't have a lot of plot :c

making boyfriend!yuji chase you á°.á fem!reader
imagine doing that tiktok trend with yuji where you set your phone up, run as fast as you can like your life depends on it, and see how long it takes for your boyfriend to catch you.
and when you explain it to him he just shrugs with a gentle little smile and says, âsure, babe. sounds fun.â because your sweet boy would do anything you ask him to.
so with your phone propped up, you quickly hit the record button, then break into a sprint while yuji waits with his hands in his pockets, watching you closely and counting to ten like you told him to.
and you keep count in your head, too. to make sure heâs not cheating of course.
but itâs something about seeing you run from him that entices him in a way he doesnât expect. makes a delicious anticipation bubble inside him, makes his jaw clench. his lips take to a smirk once he realizes thatâs what you wanted, and then he takes a breath.
âten.â
he takes off immediately, a little dirt kicked up in his absence from how powerfully his foot launched him into motion.
and youâre a mess of giggles as you run, heart beating against your ribcage because you know it wonât be long. you donât bother looking back, you know you canât outrun him.
you havenât even blinked twice when a pair of strong arms snake themselves around your middle and heâs got you caged in the air with a low grunt, your backside pressed against his chest, feet kicking and flailing as you squeal between laughter for him to let you go. his hold only tightens further, biceps flexing with a little more effort when you squirm. his hands are locked on his forearms that bind you to him, ensuring you wonât be going anywhere.
you can feel the rapid thumping of his heartbeat, the heat of his body and it makes you pull your bottom lip under your teeth. thereâs no need to wonder if this excited him as much as it did you, because you can feel it.
itâs exhilarating, to say the least. youâre completely out of breath, and just as you expected, heâd barely even made an effort.
the sharp of yujiâs canines gently nip at the shell of your ear to make your breath catch in that way he likes, his voice low and smoldering, yet sending a shiver down your spine when he whispers,
