Body awareness is absolute shit for chronic illness. “Become aware of your body. Pay attention to how your body feels” great now I’m noticing the bone aching soreness that is permeating my entire body, thanks for that. My mind was automatically filtering that out for my but I sure am aware of it now!
I need like the opposite. I need “leave your body entirely and forget it exists” meditation.
OK I'm going to be That Guy(tm) for a second
because I teach meditation and this is 100% objectively true If you're in pain, especially chronic pain, you are already way too aware of your body. Doing a meditation that is focused on your body is the opposite of helpful, and especially body scan meditation (the one that starts with notice how your toes feel and moves up through the body). Any meditation that is about focusing on a single thing to the exclusion of everything else I call black spot meditation (my term, but it works)
There is a meditation that is all about leaving your body entirely and forget it exists, and I call it white spot (I promise there's a reason I name them that). White spot is what I was doing when I would ride my motorcycle. It's about trying to maintain as much awareness of the world around you and not yourself. It's like situational awareness turned up to eleven. And just like with black spot, this isn't going to be good for everyone or every situation
The problem is that far too many meditation teachers have learned a method or two that work for them, and try to teach that as the One True Way. There are very few things that the right meditation can't make easier, but it has to be the right meditation for what you're trying to improve
(meditation is complicated. Anyone who says it's simple is lying)
(I'm not really any kind of a guy)
Adding another technique that’s bad for some: focusing on your breathing. I meditated with someone who has asthma and trauma around it. It’s good to recognize when something doesn’t work for you — even if it works for a lot of people — and to look for alternatives instead of shaming yourself about the technique not being for you
My mom teaches a lot of meditations so I'd also like to add that meditation should give you energy! If you feel drained after a dread meditating, you aren't doing the right kind
Everyone has something that works for them and it can truly be anything!
Maybe it's doodling or coloring, maybe it's kneading bread, or going on a walk, maybe it's listening to specific music, but there are an endless amount that can help in certain ways
My mom teaches restorative yoga and meditation and echoes all of this. Because I was born with permanent brain trauma that led to cerebral palsy, she's always tried to help me do everything at my own pace, but especially meditation. I incorporate my spasticity into my meditation because it's obnoxiously there all the time anyway.
Everyone is different, but the mindfulness meditations in Mindfulness Coach - an app created by the VA’s National Center for PTSD - have been invaluable to me. When I'm dissociated from my body all the time, I don't notice when I'm doing things that hurt me until it's too late. I've found other meditations to be completely useless (and even detrimental) to me, but this app has been teaching me how to occasionally check in with my body and notice what's happening without judgment. It's okay to dissociate from intolerable pain to survive, but for me it's important to come back to my body from time to time.

Brother Herbert's Big Onion
remake of a drawing from a few months ago that I was dissatisfied with
this is clearly the Redwall alter ego of Peter Glazebrook
oh yeah Peter Glazebrook is 100% the inspiration behind Brother Herbert. Every drawing of Herbert is my attempt at capturing the pride and joy in this man's face at his big vegetables
Tonight we feast!
The good news: I finally found a job, and while entry level, I find the work and the coworkers to be enjoyable
The bad news: It takes up 110% of my energy so all I can really do is work and then literally collapse. Also I just did my budget after getting my first paycheck, and unfortunately I'll be living paycheck-to-paycheck now. :(
