Micky Dolenz: Somehow making the eating of a Sno-Cone oddly erotic since 1968.
(From the July 1968 issue of Monkees Monthly.)Â
"The world's not as bad as you think it is."
âWell Mick, maybe not in your eyesâŚâ he spoke in just a mumble as he took another puff from his almost fully burnt out cigarette, slumped down on his little country home porch beside Micky, glancing over to him with just a lightly forced smile, his hoodie seemingly baggy over his lanky body and his appearance just exhausted, sad and lazy looking. âMy world jusâ seems to suck right now I mean⌠the world itself now is at itâs peace, but hell, she took the kids âway from me, she left to âer momâs house, and the band is practically done with anyhow, whatâs there really tâbe smilinâ about, man?â
Micky knew that Mike had a point, he and Phyllis were completely broken off now, and she wasnât about to let up on her decision to take the kids away, he knew that for sure. And it was true, the band had pretty much run itâs course, Peter had left and they werenât selling as well as they used to, but it was Mickyâs job to be optimistic, he left the role of the pessimist to Mike.Â
âI donât know about that man, I mean the world is great sometimes. I actually saw this really great dog today and-â Micky sensed this wasnât the time to bring that up and decided to remember that story for later. He brought the cigarette up to his lips and inhaled deeply, âThe way I look at it Mike,â He began, âEverything happens for a reason. Around every bad corner is something great waiting, and I know youâve had your fair share of the bad recently, so things can only get better right? Youâve got a big ass great thing coming. I can feel it.â Which was true, Micky had always believed in Mike, even when he didnât believe in himself, he knew that he was destined for better things, things much better than this.
âBut see, Iâm the full on dumbass in the situation this timeâŚâ he sighed softly, using his other hand to rub his face, looking out as he watched the sun very slowly set in front of his and Mickyâs eyes. âI was thâone who fucked another woman, I was the one whoâs got âer pregnantâŚâ he looked to Micky again, the cigarette between his fingers just about finished off as the ashes fell right along the wood of the patio they were sat upon. âThe so called good that really happened was the punishment of thâkids taken away from my hold when I hardly got to fuckinâ see âem in the first place, and Phyllis staying with âer mom for a while.â He knew just how negative he really had sounded, and he knew itâd just draw him lower and lower into the just sad way he has been, but all he wanted to speak was the honest truth.
âYâsee Mick..â he sighed as he looked to Micky again, brushing back his raven black, wavy hair away from his eyes as he spoke, âwhen there should be good thingâs cominâ around for me, they always will turn out awful, nothinâ good has ever come into my life anymore and itâs jusâ because thatâs what I seem tâbe deservin..â he shrugged a bit, then putting out the last of the cigarette, flicking it away and just shaking his head a bit. âI mean, I know I sound as negative as âah can be, but itâs jusâ the honest truth..â
âThing is though, maybe the new baby with Nurit it going to be your great thing, Mike. Think about it, this could be your second chance.â Micky had decided not to bring up that Phyllis was pregnant again too, since Mike was funny convinced she wouldnât let him meet his little girl when she arrived.
Micky sighed and looked into Mikeâs dark eyes, âYouâre right, you do sound negative but I understand. Iâm your best friend and Iâm here to listen to all the shit you have in your head. I just think youâre being too hard on yourself.â Micky stubbed out his cigarette and shuffled around to face Mike properly. âYeah, you fucked up cheating on Phyllis, but youâre human, Mike. Everybody fucks up. And think about the wonderful thing that you are getting from that âfuck upâ youâre getting another kid Mike, another baby for you to love and cherish like you have the boys. That kid is definitely not a fuck up, itâs not a mistake. Thatâs your kid.â
âIâve got two on thâway, oh manâŚâ he chucked softly to himself, combing his hand back in through his hair again and shaking his head. âOne âah boy, one a girl, one âah I can see, and one âah canâtâŚâ he shrugged a bit, then just smiling a little to himself as he then looked up at Micky. â âm expecting two kids at jusâ around the same time, but I can only see one⌠And itâs in jusâ a matter of two âr three months, yâknow? I wonât get thâ chance to see my first lilâ daughterâŚâ his voice went soft at the very thought of it, and as he finished talking, he reached in through his hoodie pocket, grabbing another cigarette for himself and sticking it between his lips, pulling out his lighter to light up the cigarette, then taking a bigger puff from it, then sighing as he lets out a small exhale. âCâmon Mick, why donât we stop talkinâ all this negative bullshit, I can go intâ the house with you and we can do somethinâ in there.. â
âYeah man I know itâs crap.â Micky said brushing his hand through his curls and looking at the ground. âLetâs go man, itâs starting to get cold out hereâ Micky agreed and stood to open the door to Mikeâs house.
Micky walked inside, sat down on the couch and picked up the guitar which was leaning against it. âYou been having anymore song ideas lately?â He asked plucking away at the strings. Although Mike hadnât mentioned anything about a new song, Micky felt for sure that the Texan had been writing away. He almost always had song ideas and Micky loved hearing them, it really upset him that Mike hadnât played him any in so long. âIâm sure you got something rollinâ around that big olâ head of yoursâ
