I have decided that Nexus' story starts after his canonical death from the actual show.
In canon, Nexus was fully consumed by negative star energy/died after he was set ablaze by Sun (with an assist by Ruin).
Moon claimed that the version of Nexus that came back after that event was no longer Nexus, It was mostly a dark star entity with some ghost memories of Nexus. Moon claims it will die soon and how there was no point in saving it. So Sun and Moon yeeted Nexus into a different dimension, all alone so he would fizzle out and die without hurting no one else. When Sun and Moon came back to check on him, he was basically dead. Nothing was left, only a firepit and a note for Sun of his final words.
That was what basically happened in canon.
In my AU, however, if ya haven't noticed.
Nexus was very much going through Negative Star Energy Overdoes
So he was very much in a delusional state of mind.
Moon lied by saying Nexus was a lost cause. Moon convinced Sun that the Nexus that came back for revenge was no longer Nexus. Only a dark star entity that's mimicking Nexus.
If Sun knew that it was still Nexus in there, he would have never let Moon abandon him in another dimension to slowly die alone.
The same events happened after that. They make the final visit. A firepit and a note for Sun.
Sun and Moon would think Nexus was dead by that point.
In reality, Nexus was "saved" by a certain organization.
From a group of people who all live in a place known as Moon Haven.
After a slow recovery from Negative Star Energy, Nexus becomes more aware where he is.
He also meets a certain someone who won't stop bothering him about redemption and how he just wants to prove to the Moon Haven’s higher ups to let more people in to help and blah blah blah.
Nexus thinks he makes good coffee though.
