For those of you interested in a copy of the children's book I illustrated ~
DM me and I'll put you down for another order we'll place in the coming weeks
It is a self-published passion project by the author. (We don't make any profit from the orders because unfortunately the cost beyond the basic printing/tax/shipping charge would bring it to a ridiculous price point).
The price point for this round would be somewhere between $25-30. There is a discount for orders of 10+ if there is enough interest.
More info about the book in the two posts I made for it!
June experiments ~ ( @michellestevensart on IG)
Yesterday, I spent my first full day off at home in a while repurposing demos from my 10-week classes that just again wrapped at the MFA and CCAE (AKA, I finally found a purpose for the drawing scraps I can't bring myself to throw out!!)
A 3-week experimental drawing workshop I taught at Cambridge Art Association just wrapped this week as well, centered around layering and transparency. A big driver on my desire to cut up what I had laying around here and create these.
The color prints are from a small rubber carving that I made during a weekend workshop at the start of June. I decided to draw back into those with colored pencil yesterday - all based off that pen sketchbook drawing in the post.
More graphite, watercolor, colored pencil and acrylic children's book illustrations. All for the self-published "The Elephant Village" by Brynn Macaulay.
More info in my last post.
It was important to the author for that night illustration to have the most distinct likeness to the girl she created the book for. A page where the girl could recognize herself as she's wrapped in a blanket of stars and lulled to sleep. (The closing page of the book).
Final slide is the back cover!

Something a little different for me - illustrations for a children's book! The author, Brynn Macaulay, had gone old school by putting flyers up in the city and I'm so glad I replied. We schemed for a few months and I hunkered down on it earlier this year. (All fun but I was absolutely buried when this fell the same month as the poster and magazine illustrations I posted recently :') )
I've always wanted to give book illustration a go but I had never met a writer with something ready to try it out with. Brynn was extremely excited, as she had been looking to make this into something more complete for a couple years. The book is in part a birthday gift to her best friend's child to encourage her love for her favorite animal (elephants) as well as to touch upon sustainable tourism.
As much as it would have been ideal for both of us to work on this project with a bigger budget, I appreciated the freedom Brynn gave me and for making it a wonderful process on a self-publishing level for my first go at a project like this. I'll be posting a few more illustrations soon, but for now here are some of my illustrations for "The Elephant Village" by Brynn Macaulay.
Rapunzel illustration submission from Folio Society’s yearly contest. Graphite, pastel, acrylic, colored pencil, and digital painting by Michelle Stevens.

I felt touched by luck to find an email from Madeleine about a year ago regarding this project, a week after I had seen her work at the Whitney Biennial. Soon after, we started thumbnail layouts, and I completed the final illustration this March. The image is a mix of acrylic on board and digital painting for some smaller details.
The film opens June 6 at BAM Film Brooklyn, followed by a national 35mm tour. The trailer and poster have premiered on Deadline.com
Thank you to Madeleine, Sophie, Jin and the team at Cinema Guild!

Thank you to the team at Boston Art Review for having me back again for these illustrations of points of interest around the Berkshires! Write-up by Lauren Levato Coyne. I was born and raised in Massachusetts, but didn't have the opportunity to visit out towards the border of Western Mass until the time I was in college via some museum field trips. I've loved every visit I've had since. Looking forward to checking out the spots I learned about through this project next time. All illustration are graphite drawings, digitally colored.
