New year in the old country.
Edgewood, known simply as "The Farm" to family members, was built in 1890. The property exceeds 200 acres, which served as a cattle farm for the family until 2011.
Three generations have inhabited the residence. Originally just a two-bedroom, one hall way home, the house was augmented by the addition of a bedroom from the Holly Grove homestead. Later additions included a "new room" and kitchen, as well as a porch.
The family has made other additions to the relatively austere property, as seen above. There are numerous satsuma and pecan trees on the property, each producing substantial yields every season. There are a few "stores" that house farm equipment and old house-hold items. The cattle gap and rusting barbed wire fences are tangible reminders of past cattle herds that roamed the fields at Edgewood.
The Edgewood homestead sits on Louisiana Highway 421, which is called Spillman Road by locals. LA 421 is bounded by U.S. Highway 61 near Wakefield, La., on the west-side, and LA 10 near Jackson, La., to the southeast. It is yet another gem out in the country.
