— BIOGRAPHY
From the outside looking in, one would say Mia Barone was born with a silver spoon. But Tolstoy said it correctly when he said each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. The Barone family to the outside world had wealth, prestige and all they could want, but to those in the know they were a cruel family with aspirations for power with no tolerance for weakness or failure. Mia was born the second child of the prestigious Barone, the first daughter and the first of the twin siblings Mia and Leo. She never had any memories, even when she was young, of a happy family, of any love from her father or any attention from her mother. She learned quickly that her father was quick with his razor sharp tongue, but he was just as quick with the back of his hand or a fist. Tantrums and misbehavior were not tolerated. The price of what some may call a perfect life was a loveless and cruel home.
Mia saw her mother turn to alcohol and drugs to numb the pain, she saw her turn away and let her father beat his children and yell at them all for the sake of protecting herself from his attention and those same beatings. Though some might call her mother a victim as well, Mia despised her for never protecting them. Her older brother followed her father around and worshiped the man, doing whatever he told him and over the years she saw him shaped just so by her father to accept the treatment, and sometimes even encourage it just to stay on top. Their younger sibling was just another victim in this cruel show. The only person she had in her family was her twin brother, Leo. The two were close from birth and only grew up closer, a bond forged by the shared trauma. When they were young they had a secret language between the two of them, they were irrespirable in school and often exhibited behavior of knowing what the other was thinking. When asked about their sometimes strange behavior, they would respond it was just a twin thing.
With her home life nothing short of horrible, Mia quickly built up a wall to protect herself from everyone else. She seemed cold, even from a young age, and emotionally distant. But it had all been a coping mechanism to survive in the Barone household. That was until she crossed paths with Gabriel de la Cruz when she was ten. The man had been introduced into her life far before that, as a family friend and from one of the three very important families. He found her one day hiding from her father and crying with a developing bruise. The older boy treated her with a gentleness Mia hadn't experienced before, and one she was slow to trust. But soon he brought her back to the de la Cruz house and treated her to a sweet and simply sat with her even when she refused to speak. From that day forward, he became a big brother figure to her. Though she was close to Leo, it hadn't been the same as someone bigger, stronger, and older taking her under his wing. She spent many days at the de la Cruz household with Gabriel, growing up under his protection and under his care.
When Mia was thirteen, her father moved up in a world she was learning more about each day. Her family, and the three other families who had been friends to her family were part of a mafia crime organization. They had come together generations before to fight against the government together and to become stronger together. Combined, the four families rules Los Angeles under the name The Family. As a child, the truth had been there but slightly hidden, more so not directly talked about. But she saw the men her father had meetings with, the guns sticking out of waistbands of some who entered her house, and the overheard conversations. But when she was thirteen, her father moved up to become Don, the leader of the leaders, and it had been explained to them then exactly what the family business was. She'd become a mafia princess that day, as the eldest daughter of the Don of this powerful group. But she had no pride for she knew exactly what kind of monster her father was and had known her whole life.
Her drive had come from getting out of that house one day. Mia had always been intelligent and bright, and over the years she became more studious once she was able to think of college in the future. She had always loved to read as she was able to escape in those pages, and in real life as she could grab a book and find a small place to hide from her father out of the way and quiet. She wanted to climb to the top, not just academically but in the organization she saw more of every day. It was such a boy's club and Mia despised it. She was strong, her life had tried to beat her but she had never lost her fire. Why couldn't she climb to the top? Why couldn't others who were like her lead? Just because of their sex? When Mia was sixteen she finally convinced Gabriel to start training her. He taught her to shoot, how to fight, how to wield a knife, manipulation and war strategies. Mia flourished under his tutelage at the same time she excelled academically. Mia graduated the top of her class and soon started college studying pre law at Yale. Being on the opposite side of the country from her father finally gave her the freedom to truly come into herself. She was accepted into Law School at Harvard after graduating. Working hard for those years, Mia finally graduated at the top of her class. She could have stayed out east, finding a job at any number of prestigious law firms. But instead, she had decided to return to California and to carve out her own place. She quickly joined The Family, becoming a lawyer for the organization and securing her spot not just with her smarts and wits, but her strength and skills with physically fighting.
Since then Mia has been making a name for herself within the Family, not just for being the daughter of the Don, but for being smarter than those entrenched in the boy's club and for holding her own when faced against those who tried to beat her down. She often came out on top, earning a reputation for being a cold and beautiful bitch. Mia hated her father, but as the Don he still wielded all the power and she resented the man more for it. Here she was, stronger than ever and she still was under his thumb. So Mia bid her time, silently hoping for his death but carving out her spot and slowly gaining her own power. Now as tensions rise in the city, Mia knows she will have a part to play with the other gangs vying for power and she is eager to not only fight, but to win.
