Hey emoji users: Did you know that when you send your friend on your Nexus, they might see on their iPhone? And it’s not just ; this type of thing can happen for all emoji (yes, even ). In …
That part of library school where you start thinking you see metadata everywhere...
The metadata course I am currently enrolled in is really interesting. It's fast-paced but there is a lot to cover so that is understandable. We began with an introduction to XML which I picked up fairly easily as I am familiar with HTML and its similarly formatted. From there, we've covered Dublin Core, CDWA, PREMIS, PBCore, MIX, and METS schema. It's a lot to remember but aside from a few technical issues, I'm keeping up fairly well.

As promised here are pictures of the new book I got for the holidays!
The Triangular Book of St. Germain. The Dragon lineage holds the secret to longevity and transcendence. St. Germain was an alchemist renown for his longevity and youthful appearance. Alchemy begins and ends in the quest for Eternal Life. It is a Spiritual technology of Rebirth using natural methods that in their effect transcend Nature by amplifying that which is Immortal within us. It does not exist in Nature but must be prepared by Art. This book differs from many alchemical texts in its language, being more of a Ritual Invocation than a recipe.
Missing element has been the cryptographic key to the cipher text. It is highly possible that other secrets remain “buried” in the text for those astute enough to “dive deeply” into this metaphysical database. Surely the surface text is just the tip of the alchemical iceberg. One might immediately suspect even the Latin title page itself, which contains the intention of the author that this wisdom is a great gift for the wisest. Even the French text itself may be riddled with undiscovered ciphers, for St. Germain is known to have encoded secrets in up to eight languages at once, mixing them together freely to further conceal their treasure. The cryptographic text could still potentially conceal a variety of ciphers that should be explored as possibilities: simple substitution ciphers, key ciphers, wheel ciphers, Hermetic and Kabbalistic ciphers, number codes, etc. The unusual triangular shape of the book itself implies the Three Principles of Alchemy: Salt, Mercury and Sulphur (Body, Soul and Spirit). The triangle itself upright is a symbol of Fire; reversed of water; and interlaced of the union of opposites. The triangle form could also suggest a triple meaning for the contents of the book: Alchemy, Kabbalah and Hermeticism. It is a recipe not only for experiencing a symbol in one’s inner world but for manifesting it in Reality, for becoming a living embodiment. The triangle is a 2-dimensional representation of a pyramid, a virtual Resurrection machine. There are 20 triangular faces in an Icosahedron, eight in an Octahedron, four in a Tetahedron, etc. The triangle, or Tetrahedron is the geometric basis of all forms. Precious stones exhibit crystal structures. The structure of the diamond, face-centered cubic close pack, is related to the alchemical squaring of the circle. The Tetrahedron is the most basic shape to be found in the three dimensional Universe of volume. The Merkaba Star Tetrahedron is actually two Tetrahedrons interlocked to form a three-demensional Star of David. The configuration of the Star Tetrahedron is formed within the first eight cells of life and remains fixed at the base of the spine throughout one’s life. The Star Tetrahedron also models the energetic body of the human being, the blending of Heaven and Earth, Male and Female and was known in esoteric knowledge of Ancient Egypt as the ‘Merkaba’.
When yous steal from the library, you are preventing anyone else from reading that book, and the very notion makes me want to drop you in the Void.

“Sigils, Ciphers and Scripts: History and Graphic Function of Magick Symbols” by M. B. Jackson (2013) - selected plates.
This book is highly recommended - it packs a very large amount of accurate information into its 64 pages.
“The world is language” - Terence McKenna.
At each level of experience there are various languages, codes and symbols that describe that level. The first step to improving your own state and that of others is to understand how these languages work. The next step is to start writing your own narratives, stories and texts in your language of choice.

Library School: Week 2
One class already cancelled. I guess it doesn't really matter since I sort of wish my online classes didn't have an actual meeting time in the first place. I have so much reading to do. Like, so much. It's not that it is uninteresting or anything but I do feel like I an just reading it as fast as I can and not really digesting anything. I am takibg all my notes using the GoodNotes app on my iPad.
This review article identifies and discusses some of main issues and potential problems – paradoxes and pathologies – around the communication of recorded information, and points to some possible solutions. The article considers the changing contexts of information communication, with some caveats about the identification of ‘pathologies of information’, and analyses the changes over time in the way in which issues of the quantity and quality of information available have been regarded. Two main classes of problems and issues are discussed. The first comprises issues relating to the quantity and diversity of information available: information overload, information anxiety, etc. The second comprises issues relating to the changing information environment with the advent of Web 2.0: loss of identity and authority, emphasis on micro-chunking and shallow novelty, and the impermanence of information. A final section proposes some means of solution of problems and of improvements to the situation.

In 1934, a Belgian visionary named Paul Otlet conceived of a library with no physical books whose contents could be viewed on a screen. His obsession was to classify, encode and unify books and documents published all over the world.
Library School: Week 1
Things are going okay so far. I am taking two classes while working full time. This isn’t ideal as I do have a lot of assigned readings but I just really need to finish the degree in a reasonable amount of time.
While somewhat inconvenient, I suppose it is nice that the eLearning classes do have a designated meeting time. I definitely feel more of a connection to the professors after one class than I did after 6 weeks of class in one of SCAD’s online courses which, essentially, felt like a computer program on autopilot. It’s nice seeing the professors on a live video feed as well and it’s even nice seeing the comments scroll by from the other students.
A couple words on the other students though while I am thinking of it. What on earth happened to professionalism and respecting teachers? Some of my graduate school classmates respond to questions from the professor with emoticons and/or haha/lol. I mean ... really? This is graduate school.
Q “How many of you have experience using XML?”
A :-)
