On the streets of Lumière, Renoir’s creations clashed with the echoes of expeditioners remade by his sister. His mother watched from somewhere beyond the Canvas, weakened, alive, still ringing hollow with her grief. Their voices were just noise, a horrible dissonance constantly clamouring in his ears.  He couldn’t hear the melodies of the world anymore. The wind in the treetops at night. The laughter of people leaving a party. Music drifting between cobbled streets and out over calm waters.  The soft scrape of a meticulously prepared shoe across worn floorboards.  A clear soprano voice lilting through a treasured verse.

Natalie sighed.  “The ordeal you have been through, Aurélie…” she said, her voice subdued. “It leaves a wound on the soul as much as on the body. Perhaps even more so. The body cannot heal if the soul forbids it to. I think Verso would have wanted –”  “Stop.”  A hollow, shredded creature inside her was screaming its throat raw. She shut the door on it.  Not yet.
