Throughout the whole arc we see Kanda forcing him to be the most honest he's ever been, pushed into telling his past, his secrets, his anxieties. In return Kanda earnestly tries to help him in any way he can, even drawing upon his own tragic experience with Alma Karma to help Allen pursue the truth. It's fitting that it is Kanda who takes this role of removing the mask because that was the part of him that Kanda hated most, the lies.

Now at the end of the arc, Allen could say he'll meet Kanda again. He doesn't believe in it, knows finding out more about Nea and his own past will probably be the death of "Allen Walker". So instead he says goodbye and thank you.

so obviously the entire alma arc is heartbreaking but the real kicker is what happens after that arc and what’s going on rn.

like kanda is so much nicer to allen and johnny (even if it’s in his weird autism coded kanda way) because it’s like he’s finally got this burden taken off of him.

then when allen is talking about his past and kanda asks to see the grave (and allen rightfully freaks out) he just responds with “alma was still alive”

up until this point kanda doesn’t talk about alma AT ALL. even after alma dies he only talks about him RARELY or when he has to. he doesn’t even go out of his way to talk about his past or emotions in any way shape or form that isn’t tinged with anger.

so kanda willingly bringing up alma, even if it hurts, is just so heart-wrenching. because he misses alma and he loves him but most of all he finally has closure.

and also like, the significance of kanda helping allen deal with the 14th is so important because i refuse to believe that if he hadn’t seen alma again he wouldn’t hesitate to return allen to the order. sure kanda knows the order is corrupt, but the alma arc proved to him that they didn’t have to be corrupt and cruel, and because of that he chooses to help allen.
