“If today’s not a good day for it, we can—”

“No,” Sasuke says. Suddenly, he curls in on himself and wraps his arm around himself like he’s chilled to the bone. “I miss them every day, Sakura.”

She sits up again, resting a hand on his back. “I’m sorry.”

“I miss them even more on days like today. It’s hard not to imagine a future where so many terrible things never happened.”

Sakura rests her cheek on his shoulder. “I . . . won’t pretend to understand like I used to. But I love you. And all I’ve ever wanted is to love you, and for you to be happy. Will this make you happy?”

Sasuke turns to Sakura with a ravishing sorrow in his eyes. He buries his face in her neck, wraps his arm around her. They fall back onto the bed. 

“Sasuke?” Sakura asks. 

But it seems Sasuke has gone nonverbal. All he can do is hug her even more fiercely, as if he’s going to lose her tomorrow. But all he can think is, I’m really going to have a family again.

“Sakura, will you marry me?”

She blinks. The gauze she had around her mind lifts, and all of a sudden, the TV static is gritty sand on her skin. The room is too dark and she’s still too sweaty and sticky from sex. “What?”

“Will you marry me?”

Sorry for the delay, again. It’s been a rough year. Didn’t wanna be alive for a bit there, still kinda don’t. But the writing keeps me alive, ya know? ANYWAY this is a big chapter. I wrote it all in one sitting. I’m not sure if I’m too happy with it, but sometimes you just gotta get it out n move on. I hope you enjoy <3

“Are you feeling alright?” Sasuke asks. 

“Yes,” she replies. “Just could use some water and a snack.”

“Good thing I came prepared,” Sasuke says. He opens his bag to reveal two full canteens, some dried strips of fish, and fermented-vegetable onigiri. 

Sakura smirks. “Unlike you to come so prepared. Usually that’s my job.”

Sasuke averts his eyes. “Well, I’ve been . . . I’ve been trying to be better lately.”

“What do you mean?”

Firelight flickers hot and orange across Sasuke’s face. He turns away from her. “Ever since that day, after breakfast, in the tree . . . I’ve been trying to make it up to you.”

At first, her heart swells at the gesture, but then the full conversation comes back to her. Sasuke did reaffirm their love and his commitment, but nothing has substantially changed between them. At least not that she’s noticed, but she wants things to change. She really wants it to, especially now that she gets closer and closer to delivery as the days go on. Where are they going to stay? How are they going to take care of this baby and stamp out this new Zetsu threat? It’s true that Sasuke’s words do make her feel more secure, but each day, new insecurities and worries and threats arise. 

How can she trust him after all they’ve been through? How can she not?

Thank you guys for being so patient for the update. I lowkey got laid off and changed careers for the second time in one calendar year, so things have been a lil rough. I was also stuck on this chapter in general for a while, too. But I'm happy with it, which is really all that matters. Thank you for all your kudos and comments over on AO3.
