something something about "in moonlight, black boys look blue" being able to be interpreted as referring to black boys being defined by their environment (as the moon is the setting & its the light defines their body), and basically the whole movie is a warning about not letting yourself become so. and earlier in the film, there's a scene of little chiron watching this broken-down state of his mother in this light for her to appear "pink", similarly to like how black boys appear "blue" in moonlight, after we're shown her and juan arguing about her drug addiction all while he contributes to that addiction by dealing drugs. basically she too was defined by her environment, as the lack of help with and the stress of parenting and being supplied drugs by others has led her down this path. this same scene of paula is then shown again before we're seen chiron grown up into his adult-self who becomes "black" to survive, being the warning that he later takes to heart in the end with kevin.
