i want to upgrade my looks, mostly the way i dress, where should i start from?
Upgrading my physical appearance is actually one of my favorite ways to glow up. After all, it's the first thing that others see, right? That’s not to say that any other area of self development is less important. In fact, I always emphasize that elevating your mindset is the first step; physical appearance comes after, and then everything else.
Here's my practical approach to upgrading your physical appearance (fashion specifically, if you would like I can post another article for hair, skin, etc):
1. First of all, cull your wardrobe.
With the new year around the corner, it's the perfect time to unclutter your wardrobe! Dedicate an afternoon or even just a few hours to set some jazzy music, and get down to business. Starting from shoes, lingerie, tops and bottoms, dresses, sweaters and coats - review what resonates with the new you, and what's part of the past. Use these questions as pointers if you're unsure:
- would you want to be seen by the man of your dreams wearing this item?
- do you feel confident and 'in your element' while wearing it?
- have you worn this item in the past 6-12 months?
- is it in good state (does it have any frayed edges, washed out colours, or is coming undone)?
- does it resonate with the persona you want to become, your new style, new aesthetic, new mindset? would the new you wear this?
If the answer is no to most of the above, it's time to let that item go.
2. Sit down and actually define what you want your new style to be.
- what are your favorite colors? what colors make you feel in your element?
- what style? (sporty, elegant, casual, academic, etc)
- what textures?
- what patterns?
- what combinations?
- what's the energy you want to exude with your new look?
By answering these questions, you'll be able to create your signature wardrobe, your signature style that is specifically tailored for your tastes and needs. Remember, being classy means following the principles of elegance, timelessness, or function and efficiency. It's about following what works for you, not just what looks trendy on the runway.
I can guarantee that if you wear the style that represents your identity, you will feel, act and be more confident than if you threw on a popular outfit that is the momentary trend.
3. Now that you know your new style, create a visionboard with inspiring photos.
This is the most fun part. Use Tumblr, Pinterest or WeHeartIt to find photos that reflect your new style. Collect dozens, hundreds of photos, as much as you want!
Just brainstorm ideas for looks that resonate with you and make you feel like a queen.
4. Create a list of specific items for your new wardrobe.
This means pulling out your journal or your laptop and writing down the exact items you want. The level of detail here depends on you. You can go two ways with this:
You can even skip this step if you prefer to shop spontaneously and just enjoy the process of new discoveries.
Or as in my case, go very detailed. Personally, I'm the kind of person who uses Excel lists for literally everything, including my wardrobe glow-up. For instance, under my Jewellery section I have items like pearl earrings (timeless and beautiful), silver necklace with my name tag, and particular bracelets and watches that all work together in terms of aesthetics and style.
See, that's why it's so helpful as first step to define what your style is. That way, once it's all set up in your wardrobe, any combination of accessories and clothes will look good because it was intended to work as a unit, and not just random pieces with no underlying intention.
You know your new style, you have a style visionboard and a clear list of items to find... now it's time to start shopping!
Remember that you shouldn't break the bank just to elevate your physical appearance. Any self improvement should be done in strategic, practical, progressive way. In the case of upgrading your wardrobe, this is something that may take from several weeks, months to even half a year or more - depending on your particular situation.
6. Organize your new wardrobe.
Creating a capsule wardrobe (a concept popular in minimalism) will transform your life. It means choosing quality over quantity, and carefully selecting each item in your wardrobe, so that it is easily manageable at the end of the year when you want to do a refresh. It’s easy to put an outfit together daily, and just overall so satisfying.
When your clothing is carefully chosen, and effectively organized, you’ll know where you can find anything at the drop of a hat, and make dressing up so much easier. And that’s the whole point of upgrading any area of your life - making your life easier and more enjoyable!
Hope this helps ❤️
