And the crimes they find so horrendous? Who can say?

A post celebrating the death of a fictional character can generate the same outrage as one condemning a real life one.

There is no separation between non and fiction. They’re all on the other side of the screen. They’re all far away and shaped as your mind decided, as the masses depict them.

Are they murderers? Abusers? Pedophiles? The scum of the earth that should be shunned from society and left for dead?

Are they righteous? Virtuous? Infallible in mind and heart? Could throw the first stone?

Or, and that’s where many will turn on me, are human beings complex? Hold the capacity for great empathy and deeds of unfathomable kindness, all while being petty, and ignorant, and self-serving to the point of doing harm.

Harm is subjective. There are laws and societal rules that give us a guideline, a script to follow, which is very helpful to most, for those who struggle to pick up on distress as much as on joy.

But harm is subjective. Guidelines are wonderful, but just like with everything else, no one size fits all. Not all people, not all scenarios, not all complexities.

“If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.”

It was used to be taught as a principle of a functioning society, without it the community crumbles. Without the community the individual crumbles. Without the individual there is no community.
