The insane delivery mission behind “a steed’s red dust brings a concubine’s smile.” How does a minor Tang Dynasty official transport fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang’an against an impossible deadline and a labyrinthine bureaucracy? Reads like a Tang Dynasty Mission: Impossible—tightly plotted, meticulously researched, and thrilling in its historical detail.

You can finish it in an afternoon, but it lingers. Ma Boyong at his best with “historical possibility” fiction.

Thirty years in a Malaysian Chinese community, “seen” through the keen perception of a blind girl, Yinxia. The grimy market life, tangled relationships, quiet struggles, and small triumphs are rendered in fragments that build into something monumental.
