Through my years fighting mental illness I have become aware that, although still highly stigmatized, there are many people who are willing to listen and lend a helping hand. Despite this discovery I have realized that a detrimental symptom of mental illness is not easy to discuss, this is suicidal ideation. At times fleeting, there will also be days when the thoughts will not quite shake off, through this project I wanted to show what may go on in the mind of an individual considering suicide.

1. Suicidal Ideation

Suicidal thoughts, also known as suicidal ideation, are thoughts about how to kill oneself, which can range from a detailed plan to a fleeting consideration and does not include the final act of killing oneself. The majority of people who experience suicidal ideation do not carry it through

This concept idea stems from battling through my own suicidal thoughts, and I wish to visually demonstrate the inner-workings of the suicidal mind.

One project idea that I have been considering for a few weeks now is a narrative, which would incorporate photography, glitches, and digital illustration. Beginning with a still image of an exposed wrist and hand a glitch will begin to occur demonstrating a shift from reality to what one is thinking. The glitches will bring in another image of the same exposed wrist, except this time there will be a box cutter held up to it. Slowly animation will begin to rotoscope to simulate the act of making deep enough cuts. The blood and everything from there would then be animated, as it drips and drains down the sink. The drain will then lead to darkness only illuminated by the swirling dark water, culminating into a seed. At this point hope creeps back into the animation through the symbolism of a lotus. With the lotus seed being located where the water drained to it will begin to sprout and make it journey to the light. Once the lotus finally blooms it will create a brightness that radiates turning the screen white as a transition back to the individual in the beginning gazing at their wrist with their suicidal thoughts. { Understand more about the symbolism behind the lotus flower here: https://buddhists.org/buddhist-symbols/the-meaning-of-the-lotus-flower-in-buddhism/ }
