"Yeah. It’s my dad’s Keitaizer." Kasumi follows Jen to the restaurant. "I inherited two things from my dad: his technology, and his engineering mind. He always told me I inherited my looks from my mom, though."

"It’s not very often that I get to witness things like that in depth that aren’t belts…" A small smile came to her face with Kasumi’s last two sentences. "And I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing, too—even though I haven’t seen your parents!" She chuckled a bit, her shoulders shaking with the noise.

"Well, my father was good at two things: doing his work on time, and making it look like he wasn't. It really drove his bosses at I-NET crazy. Somewhere along the way, that allowed him to meet my mother. She saw right through his scam, understanding that he was doing three different things while he was 'relaxing' and she asked him to teach her how to do that."

"Coal fired pizza?" Kasumi considers it as she takes a bite of her candy. "I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. I guess it must be good if you’re recommending it, Jen."

"Cool! It won’t be like pizza you’ve had before." She checked her watch. "Ah, it’s almost 5 now. We should get going. By the way, I totally forgot after our little spar, but that phone—that was owned by one of the Megarangers, right?" It would make sense that she inherited it, after all.

"Yeah. It's my dad's Keitaizer." Kasumi follows Jen to the restaurant. "I inherited two things from my dad: his technology, and his engineering mind. He always told me I inherited my looks from my mom, though."

"That sounds like a good thing. I love tamarind, and other spicy foods."

Jen smiled a little as they exited the shop. She was quiet for a while, simply enjoying walking down the street. They had neared the end of a block when she spoke up again. “By the way, most places around here fill up at 6 or 7—we should probably get a table early. Have you ever had coal oven pizza? There’s a local joint that makes it better than I’ve had anywhere else in the state. It’s definitely gotten more popular around here, not just as something you get for takeout.” She wasn’t really sure how common it was in Japan—probably not, she guessed, or at least not the kind she’d usually have back home. 

"Coal fired pizza?" Kasumi considers it as she takes a bite of her candy. "I've heard of it, but never tried it. I guess it must be good if you're recommending it, Jen."

"I love gingerbread. It’s such a rare treat for me. Back in those days, I loved taffies and spicy candies. I also tried some of those candied insects a few times." She gathers her purchases in a small bag.

"Insects…? Never really had ‘em. Sounds, uh, crunchy." Jen’s mouth pulled a little at the thought—those were becoming a novelty in recent times, right? Probably in cities and stuff. "Spicy stuff—oh, there’s some Mexican candy that’s made of tamarind. I’m not really a sweet tooth, but that’s some of my favorite because it’s so spicy, y’know? I’ll see if I can score you some if I can get it sometime."

"That’s not much to go on. Is the taste really that hard to describe?"

"Either way, I think I’d enjoy trying some. I think I had some once when my dad brought me here. But that was twenty years ago. I can’t remember the taste."

"Well, it’s uh…sweet, for sure. One of my friends is a real fan of sweets; she loves the maple cookies." Jen opened a door to one of the small stores along the sidewalk, letting Kasumi walk in first.

"That's not much to go on. Is the taste really that hard to describe?"

She looks Jen up and down. “You look good for that age. What’s your secret?”

"Eheh…genetics, I guess? My mom doesn’t look her age, either…and I’m pretty active, so I’d guess that helps. The worst drawbacks are when people who don’t know you ask what you’re doing out of high school…" Jen shrugged it off, shoving her hands in her pockets. "So, before we go to dinner later, is there anything you might want to try? We might not have everything under the sun, but I can direct you towards the best places."

"I have to admit a bit of a sweet tooth. I was hoping to try some real maple candies. I don’t know about the right season for that though."

"Oh? Well, spring is more the season for maple sugar, but I think we can pick up maple cookies year-round, if you’re good with that." Jen answered. "I’m trying to think of anywhere that might have seasonal stuff, like winter squash…and to be honest I’m kind of craving a gingerbread flavored coffee, myself." She tapped her chin thoughtfully, moving to the side to make way for an incoming pedestrian.

"Either way, I think I'd enjoy trying some. I think I had some once when my dad brought me here. But that was twenty years ago. I can't remember the taste."

"That’s always—wait, how old are you?" Jennifer asked, slowing down in her walk just a little.

"I’m 24. Most of the other engineers at I-NET are in their late 40’s."

"Oh?" Jen asked, her expression brightening. "You’re only a few years younger than me, then!"

She looks Jen up and down. "You look good for that age. What's your secret?"

"There’s so much I want to learn. I’m glad I get to learn it from it from someone closer to my own age. That’s a nice change of pace."

"That’s always—wait, how old are you?" Jennifer asked, slowing down in her walk just a little.

"I'm 24. Most of the other engineers at I-NET are in their late 40's."

"I grew up in the cold part of Japan. All the beautiful colors happen during cherry blossom season. But around here, there’s so much variety." She takes in a deep breath. "And the air is much cleaner. I can feel my mind clearing as we speak."

"There's so much I want to learn. I'm glad I get to learn it from it from someone closer to my own age. That's a nice change of pace."

"It’s declassified. There’s no problem in me telling you about it." Kasumi shrugs.

  "Yeah? You know, doyen like me have been around for at least a millennium, so maybe your co-workers once stared that proof in the face without ever realizing it!" Jen picked up her purse from the ground.

"Lead the way. And if I come up with other questions about the…doyen, you called them? If so, perhaps you can answer them for me."

Jen smiled, stepping onto the park’s walkway toward the multicolored tree. “Sure, I’ll try, at least. And if there’s something I don’t know, Adam might. He’ll probably be pretty psyched to learn who you work for, if you choose to tell him. This, uh, I-NET Megaranger thing, it’s not too much of a secret, I take it?”

"It's declassified. There's no problem in me telling you about it." Kasumi shrugs.

Jen blocked Kasumi’s strike with her own arm. “You fought that guy?? Even I know that’ll only end in pain.” She forced Kasumi’s arm out of the way, stepping back. “To tell you the truth, I’ve kind of been holding back myself…It’s always harder to get into the game when the intent isn’t to kill—at least for me.” If her opponent wanted it to be, though, she could definitely pull out all the stops, short of lethal force.

"We were just sparring. Nonetheless, I am really excited to learn everything I can about your powers, your armor and you. Not necessarily in that order."

"Very well." Jen dispersed the armor, smiling a little. "I’m glad you’re so fascinated by this! Since we’re done with that, is there something else you’d like to do while we’re still in Atmosphos? I’d take you to dinner, but it’s still a bit too early."

"The idea of inborn elemental manipulation just makes me grin." Kasumi cancels her armor. "There are so many scientists at I-NET who don't believe that humans have the right physiology to manifest such powers without help. I'm so happy that I've found living proof that they were wrong."
