Katti Anker Møller (1868-1945), ca 1910

Katti was one of 10 siblings. She grew up watching her mother go through pregnancy after pregnancy. Her mother spendt her last years struggling with anxiety and fear of getting pregnant, before dying at age 50. Seeing the reality of her mother’s life up close was an important background for Katti’s commitment to sex education and contraception. She became a reproductive rights activists, who was behind a large number of important social reforms and is considered one of the founders of the Norwegian welfare state.

In 1901, Katti Anker Møller began her work in politics. She published her first article and founded a home for unwed mothers. In collaboration with her brother-in-law, parliament member Johan Castberg, she worked on a law that would give children born out of wedlock the right to their father’s inheritance and surname as well as increase child support. This law; “The Castbergske child laws” were passed by Parliament in 1915.

Katti believed motherhood should be highly valued and fully voluntary. To achieve this she believed that mothers should get a salary from the state, that women should be educated about sex and that they should not feel obliged or forced to intercourse but should be able to have control and choose if they wanted pregnacy by using contraception. Most controversial at the time, she believed abortion should be decriminalized. She argued for her case in her two lectures “The Liberation of Motherhood” and “Women’s Birth Policy”, but was met with massive backlash and had to abandon her fight for legal abortion.
