SLANTED is consistently quite beautiful and engaging, but #31, Tokyo, takes it to another level. Uniting “cultural extremes”, Tokyo being “a city where the futuristic meets the traditional and tranquility meets speed”.

The journal NICE and its inexplicable beauty baffled me. It’s complete investment into a mesmerizing, underground cultural and artistic vision of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. For hours I tried to make sense of it, give the world shape. My ultimate takeaway was of African chic, cool, non-linear 21st bombast and lovliness.

You know spring has arrived when a new issue of RACQUET is upon us, with yet another hype new cover. With an old photo of Andre Agassi looking fly back when he had hair (or the implants he desperately installed to keep said hair).

We’ve been engaging this (still current) special issue of the South Atlantic Quarterly all summer. (And we still are.) After #Ferguson. After #Baltimore. “On Black Political Thought inside Global Black Protest”.

It’s been a while, but we are huge acolytes of Girls Like Us, and this dance and dancing NYC issue is exceptional. 

We are very much into LITTLE ATOMS journal at the bookshop now (might be one of my new personal favorites): politics, culture, and literature, but with a design aesthetic vibrantly exploding through and beyond the content. Essays that consider the gang drug wars in Mexico, epigenetics, or the illusionary nature of Russian reality, with depth and intelligence.

THE SKIRT CHRONICLES is not what you think it is, or I thought it was, but rather a community of cultures, and generations. Words as much, or more, than image. Hurrah.

(Whew.) (And it’s gorgeous.)

TWO LINES only comes out twice a year, but when it does it lights up the bookshop with it poetry and literature in translation. It is essential.
