Awesome to hear the swimming hero Mark Foster on @bbcradio2 this morning encouraging people to wild swim safely. Rivers, lakes, the sea don't need to be scary places to be in the water. And the media's continuous demonisation of wild swimming due to cold water shock, dangerous quarries, and other demons creates generations of people who are scared of open water. It doesn't need to be this way. Just look to the generations in much of Europe who have grown up with wild swimming, who are aware of the dangers and risks and who therefore don't demonise open water. How do we break this cycle? Find your nearest open water / wild swimming coach, and learn how to be safe in the water. You can then share that knowledge with your friends and family. Yes, there are dangers in open water if you're not aware of the risks and if you don't know how to deal with them when they happen. That's why coaching/lessons are essential. We're not going to name any swim coaches because we know too many, and we'll forget some and offend them.
