maybeparade will be sitting at a table full of comics at the olympia comics festival.  five handbound volumes, four of which are almost completely new.  plus, a listening station for alabama chrome comics.  also back issues of 8.5x11, sure to become collector's items among those with peculiar interests.

This is one of the twin bridges over the Hamma Hamma River where it meets the Salish Sea; one of the four rivers being crossed in a sequence I'm working on. We drove up there last week, and one of the bridges bore the graffiti: "Big Deal Coming Through".

There's another mixtape and comic giveaway at the local constabulary. Anyone in Portland Oregon who likes country music should be informed that maybeparade's resident DJ Jack Decatur will be spinning the old stuff at the Beech Street Parlor on the evening of March 6. It's a Thursday. There will be mixtapes and comics being doled out as well, plus drinks.

Another country music comic, cloudcast, and mixtape giveaway over at the local constabulary. Incidentally, this grizzly bear looks a lot like my dog. Incidentally as well, this DJ will be spinning country classics at the Beech Street Parlour in Portland on Thursday, March 6. Mixtape and comic giveaways will surely be included.

I'm working on a scene where some characters are watching television, they're sort of over-engrossed in an afternoon cartoon. I was trying to give some consideration to what would be on the screen, and it got me casting back to the kind of cartoons I remember wasting beautiful sunny days staring at. So there was the temptation to give the characters human bodies with overdeveloped muscles, but that would have been to miss out on the comic potential of lizard bodies; they walk around with those crazy spindly toes and their gonads tucked neatly behind a flap of skin.

The comic I am working on has a really solid setting, which is the Hood Canal region of the Olympic peninsula, in particular the river basin of the Dosewallips River. An early scene involves characters driving up US 101 from Olympia, and wanting the backgrounds and road scenes to be accurate, I took off last week on a sketching expedition. I was traveling in my dear old VW camper, which is this year seeing its 40 year anniversary of original manufacture, and which has been garaged up for the better part of the past several years. Such trips are often fraught. This one fell prey to human error; I miscalculated the gasoline level by a couple of miles, and ran dry just high enough in the road to coast into the state park at Potlatch. I take resource conservation seriously, so it was a combined trip. My mother in law happens to live near the Dosewallips, and I was to spend the latter part of my day visiting and helping out with some yardwork, as well as dropping the dog off for a visit to the country. So now I was out of gas with canine company and somebody expecting me, in one of the few places where phones don't get a signal. At least not the cheap ones. I chose wrong on the way to walk and ended up hoofing it 3.2 miles north to Hoodsport, when I would learn on my return that the Twin Totems was only a mile and a half south. It was a winding way, with some real breathtaking beauty and no shoulder to speak of. Quite a scramble, and with a gas can in one hand and a muzzled, obstinate dog leashed to the other, I did nary a sketch. I made it through to my destination, though, and managed the part of the afternoon's appointment that involved hauling a vanload to the city dump. Bedraggled by the afternoon I dragged myself into the Geoduck Tavern, which sits right on the Dosewallips River, hoping to see a beer and a menu. I was immediately punched in the face, after which I sat at the bar and drew the view out the window, of the water from the sea slowly filling up the delta.

there is a free store in town, for things that are not good enough to give to goodwill.  i'm there at least once a week.  i always take cassette tapes to repurpose.  this was the case decoration from one, which tape contained one of the above combinations depending if you are going by the liner or the label.
