I started a wordpress blog - check it out if you want to, keep scrolling if you donât. Either way, enjoy and happy Wednesday!

Ok so this is cool but I always wondered how they knew the shadows were different at the same instant. I mean it is not like they had phones. How did they sync up that instant. I feel like that would be interesting to know but no one ever says.
^^^Does anybody know this one? How, that far apart, the time at which the shadows were observed was synced up? I am genuinely curious, not a goddamn moron asking a gotcha question. High/Low tide? (I live in the middle of the country I do not know for the precise habits of tidal activity.) The appearance of a star (or planet) in the sky? Something as utterly mundane as sunrise?
Well, first of all, it wasnât actually pillars! Eratosthenes was told about a well in Syene that, in the summer solstice every year (June 21st) would be illuminated at the bottom entirely and without any cast shadows. This indicated that the sun was directly overhead. Going off that well known curiosity and an intelligent hunch, our dude Eratosthenes waited until high noon of the summer solstice to measure the angle of a shadow cast by a stick in Alexandria. (Sidenote: Eratosthenes was a librarian of the infamous Library of Alexandria.)
His next course of action was to hire bematists, surveyors of the time whose professional specialty was to measure distance by walking with equal length steps. They measured a distance between Alexandria and Syene of about 5000 stadia. (Guess where the word stadium comes from.) Once he had that measurement, Eratosthenes did his math-y thing, and there you have it.
ANSWER EVEN COOLER THAN I HOPED!!
Eratosthenesâ work was thorough enough that by the time he finished revising his calculations, he ended up only 66 km off of the actual polar circumference of the Earth, or an error margin of 0.16%. [wiki]

âOhhh, dadgummit!â Jack Schmitt tumbles over into the lunar dust during the Apollo 17 mission to the Moon, December 11-14, 1972.
worth noting that this is the most recent living person to have walked on the moon
fucking cringe
you post cringe on the moon once and then no one ever goes back there
Bro the âwe can disagree but still be friendsâ is true about things like tv shows and shit but not fucking human rights

Shawna Diasâs sewing machine is tucked away at her work table behind racks of fur. Hot pink, bright yellow, baby blue, they hang like a fluf
*pretends to be shocked but also maybe this will make people realize that Indigenous People Know What The Hell Theyâre Doing and Deserve Respect*
3 other fun/cool facts about the Inuit:
1. They also invented kayaks and dog booties.
Dog booties are actually really important for working sled dogs in winter to protect their paw pads from iceburn and keep ice from getting in between their toes and burning them that way.
2. The traditional Inuit diet is one of the healthiest in the world, and the most balanced for the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 consumption
Most modern diets consume way too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3.
3. Inuit is a plural noun. When speaking about a single person the correct word is Inuk (always capitalized)
For example, âThis Inuk woman is wearing traditional Inuit tattoosâ.
Who wouldâve thought the people who have been living in the coldest fucking part of the planet for tens of thousands of years would have invented the most effective cold weather clothing. Mind blowing.
unlearn racism and white supremacy without expecting some kind of pat on the back for believing in basic human rightsÂ
do u guys understand how creepy the pledge of allegiance is though like every day when ur a kid everybody just chants how great america is every morning itâs creepy
You do that every morning???
EVERY MORNING.
wait
wait
is this a real thing i thought that was just in the simpsons
Wait, other countries donât do this.
*whispers* Not even Russia
I remember when my dad had a conversation with me
because I asked him what the Austrian pledge of allegiance was (because heâs from Austria)
and he said âwe donât have a pledge of allegianceâ
and I said âwhy not?â
âhoney, think about what training your children to mindlessly pledge to a flag, without really knowing what theyâre talking about, sounds like to Austriansâ
âoh. hitler.â
âexactlyâ
RE FUCKING TWEET
You donât realize just how creepy it is until you are the only one not doing it
Iâm in Canada and we sing the national anthem every morning. I donât think thatâs the same thing though
The pledge of alliegance was made to help sell the flags, and nothing says âAmerican capitalismâ by worshipping profits

This one goes out to all my trans girls who are afraid to be sappy with their friends because when cis girls are gushy people think it's cute but when we do it people think it's weird
Trans girls are allowed to respond to this by sending me a bunch of heart emojis and unfiltered emotional nonsense, which I will return. This is a healing space.
I also want to say:
Not everyone thinks itâs weird when weâre emotional. No one should. Some do, and, judging by the response from this post already, the fear that people are judging us for our emotions is something that resonates with other trans girls.
But itâs not as common as youâre afraid, and I donât want this post to promote your insecurities.
I want you to know that your friends respect your gender, and even separate of your gender, they respect your feelings.
Youâre beautiful, girl. Go out and be loud and silly and wild if thatâs who you are. And let the people who donât respect that, for transmisogynistic reasons or otherwise, either move away or learn to accept you for who you are - itâs their job to be upfront, not yours to worry. Itâs not your job to be anxious about whether youâre loved.
I promise you are loved. I promise you are.
Shoutout to all the people who are really romance repulsed, like to the extent that it's triggering. I notice people often talk about romance repulsion in terms of it just being kinda gross, I don't really think we recognise enough that there are people who can find it really triggering, not to same extent that we recognise that fact for sex repulsion.
It took 20 years but weâve finally come full circle from phones that were too thick to fit in your pocket, to phones that are too long to fit in your pocket.
Taking a bite from a burger determines where the front of it is

i dont know if it needs to b said but whitewashing is more than just making a character of colorâs skin drastically lighter. its the changing ethnic features like wide/big noses, big lips, mono lidded eyes, etc. to look more eurocentric. like when artists draw realistic anime characters but realistic just means white to them.
âTracey did all the things a big sister would do. She always called me âNut.â She helped me wash my hands, and brush my teeth. We rode bikes and played in the sandbox. Maybe our parents didnât punish her as much. But other than that, nothing seemed different. I didnât have a clue. Then one day a boy in our neighborhood called her âa retard.â I remember running home and asking my dad what that meant. He stared at me for a moment, like he didnât know where to start. And from that day on life was different. Itâs not right to say that we werenât equal anymore. But I went from innocent and not knowing, to feeling like I needed to protect her. Whenever I got invited to slumber parties, she didnât. Unless I insisted. And she wasnât invited to prom, but we got her a dress and brought her anyway. When Tracey got out of school at 21, there wasnât much else for her to do. We didnât have many programs in our town. So she stayed at home with Mom and Dad while I moved on with my life. Big changes were hard for her. Sheâd always say, âWhy does God make us different? Itâs not fair, Nut.â She cried when I went to college. And I think my wedding was hard for her, even though she was the maid of honor. Itâs not jealousy. Itâs just that she wants to live a normal life too. When I had my two children, I was thrilled to watch her become their best friend, the same way sheâd been mine. I always say that we raised them together. She loved my children more fiercely than a mama ever could. But once again, I watched them outgrow her and graduate through life. But Tracey taught them things I never could. My children never blink when people are different. Sheâs taught us all so much. She just loves everyone. And she rolls with things better than we give her credit for sometimes. Dad passed away in 2018. It was hard on all of us, but I know it was especially tough on her. I watched her during the entire funeral. She was greeting everyone and shaking their hands. And I remember thinking: âWow, this must be so much for her.â When the last person had left, I walked over and put my arm around her. And told her how proud I was. She just gave me a hug, and said: âLove you Nut.ââ
