But I guess that makes sense. I mean, if I called myself The King of Sex, and everyone else did too, I wouldn’t expect me daughter to be called The Princess of Sex. I mean, that’d just be weird, wouldn’t it?

I... Uh. Yeah. That would be weird. Glad you and I understand each other.

But you’ve just gone and called him the king! Wouldn’t that make you a princess?

It doesn’t even count. It’s not like I’m running a country and going to balls and stuff. And ‘pumpkin princess’ is just about the worst nickname I can possibly think of.

“It’s still not very fair,” Maya replied. “I think you’ve got every right to be annoyed. I’d be pretty ticked, too.” There wasn’t really a school subject that Maya would have an advantage in because of where she was from, but if there was, and she wasn’t allowed to take it, she’d be pretty angry about it. “Exactly!” Maya exclaimed. “ I mean, I don’t want to be a composer, I have no idea what I want to be, but whatever it is, it won’t involve calculus.” She sipped her hot chocolate, and as she put down the cup, she looked at the other girl. “It’s cool that you’ve figured out what you want to do with your life. What made you decide on being a composer?”

“Oh! That makes sense,” Maya said, laughing at herself for not figuring that out. “That’s pretty cool,” she added. “I’m flattered,” she said, smiling back at the other girl. Maya nodded emphatically, the girl had voiced her own rationale for skipping. “Right? My teacher’s so uptight about everything. I’m late twice in one week and she thinks that’s the absolute worst thing I could possibly do,” she replied, rolling her eyes.
