Weβre not here for revenge. It canβt be about that. It can.
THE LAST OF US 1x06 (2023) STRANGER THINGS 5x08 (2025)
THE WALKING DEAD, 9.05 - What Comes After THE LAST OF US, 1.02 - Infected
The girl hadnβt said a word since theyβd set off, the trio tasked with finding some kind of Firefly outpost. Still, despite not knowing where she was going, Ellie was ahead of the pack, Tess trailing behind with Joel. Truthfully, the partners hadnβt said much either, largely communicating through glances. They were both wary about what lay ahead, having no idea why this girl was so important to Marlene in the first place. But if transporting some kid meant finding Tommy, then itβd have to be worth it, because although heβd never explicitly stated it, Tess knew Joel was beside himself with worry. His brother had never gone quiet for this long. Past grievances no longer mattered β you didnβt abandon family, especially when you had so little left. As a companionship built in the quiet, it wasnβt unusual for the couple to travel in silence anyway, really only talking when they had to. But for a teenager that had beenΒ especiallyΒ spirited upon first meet, Ellieβs silence now was unnerving. Tess couldnβt see her expression, but she could imagine it. And she thought she understood the change of behaviour β the poor girl hadnβt expected to be shipped off with two strangers either. After a few hours of letting it be, Joelβs disinterest in intervening obvious, Tess finally decided to catch up to her. They were going to be travelling together for a few weeks, after all, and should learn to communicate to some degree. None of them knew what they were going to run into on the way, and they would have to rely on each other. Now walking in step with Ellie, Tess waited to see if sheβd say anything first, unsure where to start herself. But the silence only continued. With a sigh, Tess finally looked over at the teen. βItβs Ellie, right?β The girl nodded. βWeβve been walkin' a long while. You wanna stop somewhere, have somethin' to eat?β
For a kid who had been through as much as she had the past few weeks, Ellie was incredibly stoic. She was silent, compliant, putting one foot in front of the other, onto the next group, the next task. There always seemed to be something else; there was never anyΒ end. Her current reality was certainly worthy of an emotional response, but Ellie swallowed the fury, the sorrow of being abandonedΒ again.Β Sheβd now been passed around, palmed off, and controlled more times than she could count. Truthfully, sadly, she was starting to get used to it. At least this time around, she felt a sense of purpose, thatΒ oneΒ thing she could hold onto that would surely make all of the misuse and lossΒ worthΒ it. It had to be a success this time, she had to make sure of it. Unfortunately for her, that also meant spending the next few weeks with the most hostile duo sheβd ever encountered. They didnβt know why they were travelling with her either, which made things harder.
Sure, Ellie had attacked one of them, the man, but sheβd caught them sneaking around, and whoΒ knewΒ what they wouldβve done if she hadnβt interrupted them? One glance was enough for Ellie to know theyβd done allΒ kindsΒ of shit in the past. They were dangerous, Marlene had made that clear. And now here they were, teamed up and on a mission. AΒ silentΒ one, apparently. Had Ellie not been so focused on burying her resentment, she wouldβve been incrediblyΒ bored.Β YearsΒ seemed to pass before either one of them acknowledged her again, Tess suddenly sidling up to her. Ellie waited for the woman to speak up first, but that wasnβt out of spite, just wary curiosity. If it had been Joel to approach her, however, sheβd certainly have beenΒ sour. Trying to appear nonchalant at the suggestion, she shrugged. βDo you?β
βI do,β came Tessβ simple response. βIβm fuckin' starving. I've only got some piss-poor jerky but my mouth's watering just thinkin' about it.β If it hadnβt have sounded so matter-of-fact, Ellie mightβve thought the woman was joking around. But it had been clear from first meet that these twoΒ werenβtΒ the type to joke. Ellie was positive they hadnβt evenΒ heardΒ of humour. Realising the blonde was still waiting on a response, finally, she nodded. Admittedly, she was starving too, but she hadnβt wanted to look weak by voicing it, not after her and the manβs earlier altercation. Ellie could hold her own, she wasΒ sureΒ of it, and since Joel had so easily overpowered her, she now wanted nothing more than to prove it.Β βOkay then. Joel?β Tess asked, coming to a stop. Ellie did too, the woman looking back to her partner for a response.
Sheer obstinance stopped the girl from looking in his direction too; at least at first. But when he didnβt reply immediately, curiosity got the better of her. She glanced over at him, taking in his guarded stance, the rifle he held. Her eyes widened a little at the sight of it, as it did every time she saw a gun. What she wouldnβtΒ giveΒ to hold one of her own. Suddenly engrossed in her own fantasies of being that powerful, Ellie noticed too late that heβd looked at her, too. Embarrassed, annoyed, she quickly turned her head. The pair had tried to kill each other, after all, but heβd quickly proven he had the upper hand between them.Β And that was exactly why she didnβt like him, or trust him; and exactly why she found him soΒ intriguing.
