She wasnât even sure whether he was joking or being sincere. Either way, it probably wouldnât be a good idea. It wasnât something she could imagine the X-Mansion condoning. â Ah donât think the professor would like that very much, honâ. Heâd probably notice. â Where was he going to steal a microwave from anyways? Speed towards the nearest house? â Maybe try tah act like nothinâ? You might be lucky and have him not notice - could be heâll pin it on somebody else. â Though, it was the professor. Nothing in their minds was sacred.
He wasnât sure if he was joking or serious either, but he supposed heâd decide based on her reaction, which came quickly. âI was obviously joking. Iâve never stolen anything, in my life. Iâm a law-abiding citizen. Obviously.â He nodded to himself, confident that the lie was very well placed. It wasnât. âHonestly, I bet he already knows. I donât keep my thoughts locked up.â He didnât really care that people were reading his mind, it was just convenient. âBut I wonât tell anyone if you donât. I mean, anyone couldâve done it, right?â

He was a funny guy. Somebody who appeared to be taking everything with a grain of salt, rather than appear judgmental. It was something that she apparently felt that she had needed without knowing it, no one liked to be judged anyways. â What kind of stuff do ya prefer tah read? Tell me about your favorites. â It wasnât that she read much in particular, but she did have a secret stash of romance novels in her room. Sometimes it was as if what was written in the books was the closest thing she got to ever truly connecting with a person, especially due to her circumstances.
He was very proud of his sense of humour, not gifted to him through his genetics, but gently nurtured and crafted by his own hands. Itâs purely his. Heâs learnt not to judge (at least, not too much) in much the same way - trial and error, finding what works and what doesnât. âI read... uh.â He pauses, trying to remember what the book was called. âOh, uh, Catcher in the Rye. And I really liked it.â He grinned, feeling a strange cross between shy (a quite rare emotion for him) and proud of his reading habits. âWhat about you? Up to your eyeballs in murder mysteries?â

The older mutant knew how little there was he could say that would make any real difference. He remembered how much pain his future son had harboured, the words the now alternate versionâs other personalities had called him, the leaver â - the great abandoner⌠tormented and taunted for things he hadnât yet done, and wouldnât, not now. Did he have any right to judge Erik for what heâd done, given there had been a universe where he had done the same in an attempt to save his only son? âWhy donât we take a wander outside? Thereâs something I would like to tell you.â
He squinted for a second, wondering what exactly the Professor could possibly want to tell him that couldnât be said right there, but assuming that there was nothing to be afraid of, he nodded. He doesnât know that much about Erik (Sure, he can control metal. Whatever.) and he doesnât want to know. He canât let himself get attached to him, especially not now. Itâs not fair. If his father had wanted to get to know him, he wouldâve been there. âUh, sure. Whatâs up, Professor? Am I in trouble for something?â

Xavier knew what ailed the young man, the way he held himself, the fervent belief that he was dealing with everything on his own, that everything was well. Why? Because a part of him could recognise it, heâd seen it before, heâd felt it. Yes, there had been a stark difference, a darkness that had delivered him to that lonely place, and perhaps thatâs what helped him understand most of all. He wouldnât push⌠but he wouldnât abandon Peter either. âWeird indeed.â The headmaster smiled at his student, a brightness twinkling in his emerald eyes. âYouâre a remarkable young man, my friend. Never doubt that.â
Peter liked to pretend that everything was fine, even convincing himself, at least on the surface. Luckily, the surface layer of his thoughts was strong enough that he only accessed that deep, dark loneliness when everything was quiet and he was alone. He just felt... abandoned. By his father and then by his twin sister. Wanda, he could forgive. Heâd wanted to run away for a long time, but couldnât just abandon his mother. But his dad? No, what heâd done was unforgivable. He half-smiled, glancing away, almost itching to run. âOh, I know Iâm awesome.â

The youngster didnât need to conclude his sentence for Charles to know just what he was thinking, he could see it there on his face, it was written all over him with every breath. âYouâre right. I donât âhave toâ. Instead, I choose to.â He briefly explained, his words few, but honest. âWeâre all different. Each of us built upon our own beginnings, our own experiences. Would you think more of me were I more⌠similar to you?â
In his mind, Peter believes heâs a completely open book. He doesnât have anything to hide, and he doesnât have any issues. In reality, thatâs not entirely true. He has a lot of stuff buried deep inside his conscious. âRight. I guess that makes sense.â He sighed, rubbing one of his eyes. âI donât know. Itâd be weird.â

âI worry for everyone. Itâs my⌠duty, my responsibility, and perhaps my curse.â Charles murmured with the lightest of smiles, just about managing to reign in the quiet pang of amusement that stemmed from being told he was âold as ballsâ as Peter had said. âYouâre stubborn. In that respect, we have something in common.â
âYou donât have to, though. You could just act like...â Like his dad. Peter didnât finish the sentence, surprised that he had even brought it up. Obviously, he was totally and completely fine about that whole thing. It wasnât even a big deal. Not at all. âI think we have less in common than we have... Whatâs the opposite of in common?â
intensedisciplineâ
âThere was a time I thought as you do. There were⌠differences, of course. But I was adamant, resigned. Only, it was more than that.â He looked the speedster eye to eye, deciding not to push any further. âIâm here should you need me, Peter. Remember that.â
âIâm not like you, though. Iâm not old as balls for one thing, and I know how to keep myself safe. You donât need to worry about me, âcos Iâm fine.â He glanced away, unable to keep the kind of intense eye contact. âI mean. Okay. Thanks, I guess.â

She had meant to go into the kitchen to make some tea, to soothe her nerves and aid herself in getting a good nightâs rest. On her pursuit, she spotted Peter who appeared to have fallen asleep with a controller in his hand.Â
Right, Garfield had allowed him to stay over the night so they could play through most of it. It looked like he had punched out. Entering the common room, she covered him with a blanket, intending to allow him to sleep further. Gently tugging the controller out of his grasp, she found that his eyes flew open, their gaze meeting.Â
â Sorry, I didnât mean to wake youI was just trying to help you get more comfortable. â
He blinked a few times, still groggy from his nap. After all, he hadnât really slept enough to call it sleeping. He could remember playing some video games, but how heâd ended up curled up on the couch was a complete mystery.
And there was Raven, standing over him. Was it morning already? He couldnât tell. He squinted, reaching up with one hand and booping her on the nose, his movements slow for once. Heâs very cozy and honestly, he could probably fall asleep once again.
âThank you. Youâre a good bean.â

âNothing ever catches up to me, Professor. I donât need help, I donât need anything or anyone. Iâm good.â

Listening to his instructions, she was careful as she stepped further into the kitchen. There was a gentle smile upon her lips, clearly amused by the whole incident. It was probably quite embarrassing to him, but she found it to be particularly considerate. â Do you need a hand? Fair warning, Iâm no better in the kitchen, but if you want, we can try again. â She wouldnât claim to know what she was doing, but maybe two heads would work better with one task. After all, she would say that she might have learned a thing or two from her friends.
It was, for lack of a better word, humiliating that he couldnât manage to make something nice for his friends. The clean-up probably wouldnât take that long, considering his speed, but it didnât matter. She had already seen the bomb site that was his kitchen, so really, what was the point? âIt might be a good idea to have someone with less speed. I mean, you can focus on stuff without getting distracted so easily. Like me.â He zoomed off and returned completely clean, ruffling his hair. âThere, thatâs better.â

Well, shit. All heâd been trying to do was something nice for Raven coming over, and now both he and the kitchen looked as though theyâd been involved in an explosion at a flour factory, and she was here. Peter had tried his best to make cookies - something so simple even he couldnât screw it up, right? - and had used his powers to try and speed up the whole process. Alas, who knew that baking required precise measurements and timing and that you couldnât just start mixing something fast or the ingredients would fly out of the bowl? Certainly not him. âChocolate chip cookies. Watch where you step. Thereâs... stuff everywhere.âÂ
