Court servant: Judge, your honour, there is the man who killed Barbertje ! (points at Lothario)
Judge: The man must hang. How did he do it ?
Court servant: He has cut her in little pieces, and salted her.
Judge: He has done very wrong. He must hang.
Lothario: Judge, I have not killed Barbertje ! I have fed her, dressed and taken care of her. There are witnesses who can vouch for me, that I am a good man, not a murderer.
Judge: Man, you must hang ! You add to your crime with your conceit. It is not done for one who stands accused of something, to pretend to be a good human being.
Lothario: But, Judge, there are witnesses who will confirm this. And as I am accused of murder now...
Judge: You must hang ! You have cut Barbertje in pieces, salted her, and you are conceited... three capital crimes ! Who are you, little lady ?
Little lady: I am Barbertje.
Lothario: Thank God ! Judge, you can see that I did not kill her !
Judge: Hmmm... yes...so ! But what about the salting ?
Barbertje: No, Judge, he did not salt me. He has on the contrary done much good. He is a good and noble human being.
Lothario: You hear, Judge, she says that I am a good human being.
Judge: Hmmm...the third point remains. Court servant, lead this man away, he must hang. He is guilty of conceit. Court clerk, make a note as such.
