Very excited to have been accepted into the Berklee Online Master’s in Music Production! Was not expecting to go back to school anytime soon honestly but with things being how they are and with @unknownrecordspdx still in its early days, it seemed like a chance to focus on honing my craft that I couldn’t pass up. To all my friends and even family (@maurydiakite, @jaz_fujii) who have been on the front lines of the protests in Seattle, Portland, Olympia, and all around the country, I want to thank you for the impact you’ve already had in advancing social and criminal justice issues in our country and around the world. The unity I’ve seen across the country amongst protesters is incredibly moving, and caused me to really think critically about views and stances I’ve held towards social media and sharing one’s political views and beliefs. The passive and silent stance I’ve chosen to take for years is a perfect example of the privilege I have being a white man in this country, and while reading and learning about these issues is something I’ve done, what good is that without any real action to back it up? Organizations such Color of Change, the ACLU, the King Center, and the Center for Policing Equity are fighting for justice for victims like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. They show us how ordinary Americans can demand change from those who hold power such as District Attorneys, Prosecutors, the Department of Justice, Tech Companies (#bantrumpfromtwitter), and police departments around the country. They also advocate for reforms and transparency in how officers are trained, disciplined, and ultimately held legally responsible for their actions. It’s time to stop apologizing for “being political,” and letting cynicism, privilege, and fear of vulnerability keep us from being good allies in this unprecedented time. Thank you again to those who have shown tremendous bravery and courage despite all of the dangers. Please keep using PPE and PLEASE GET TESTED if you’ve been in a large crowd. The last thing we need in this incredibly difficult time is to further the disproportionate impact COVID has had on POC in this country already. And to anyone not already donating your time and risking your safety and health, PLEASE take this time to learn, listen, and keep an open heart.
