It gives much more depth with the relationship between Ice and Mav, its so great. Ice takes the step. We can tell he’s uncomfortable, pausing and having to think about what to say. Its a puncture in the mask that Tom acquired: “ice cold, no mistakes”

It shows he cares enough to reach out. To give his apologies and sympathy. To once again show Mav that — despite their pissing contest — theyre on the same team. Its so significant because, while everyone is trying to get Mav up in the air and moving on, Ice solidifies that the loss of Goose matters. That it happened and it’s going to suck and Mav is not just someone reckless the Navy tolerates, but a person that lost a brother. And the scene proves that Ice is there if Mav needs him. If he doesnt? Ice gives him space.

‘Maverick’ is a title. A manifestation of his audacious nature and snark. And when Goose dies, it all goes away. Mav turns indecisive and small in comparison to his “larger than life” attitude. So when Ice calls him ‘Mitchell’, it almost verifies that Maverick is allowed to be something other than ‘Maverick.’ Hes allowed to feel that loss.
