United Parcel Service Inc. and a startup drone partner began the first continuing commercial drone deliveries in the U.S., making a short flight carrying a medical sample between North Carolina hospitals on Tuesday.

The drone delivery pioneer has picked up a powerful partner as it prepares to start transporting lab samples on the campus of WakeMed hospital in Raleigh in what will be the first regular commercial drone delivery route in the United States.

From 10 December, drones will transport laboratory samples on behalf of Swiss Post from University Hospital Zurich (USZ) to the Irchel campus at the University of Zurich (UZH). The project is envisaged to last one year. During this time USZ, UZH, Swiss Post and the drone logistics systems provider Matternet will gather experience in long-term autonomous drone operation. The laboratory samples can reach their destination twice as quickly by air than by road in Zurich – the time saved can be invaluable to patients, doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Matternet, which provides technology for on-demand drone delivery, has raised $16 million in Series A financing led by Boeing HorizonX Ventures.

The funding for the Swiss autonomous drone logistics platform Matternet will aid its expansion into urban areas in the U.S. and elsewhere, and is a vote of confidence in what many already believe will be a standard feature of our lives in the near future.
