Left my mask at the bar the other nightâŚ
I know that making the Vahi (and not making and losing and retrieving it and all this stuff) is pretty central to Vakama's character development, but in general I'm not sure the story ever really impresses on the reader how much of a big deal this is outside of Vakama's character. This Matoran-recently-turned-Toa just created the Mask of Time. The Mask of Time?! That is almost as big of a deal as the Mask of Life - a mask that takes multiple story arcs, multiple enemies and heroes, and multiple sacrifices to get to. And Vakama just forges the Mask of Time???? Just forges it??? Tahu wears it to fight Bohrok?? Mind boggling on a world development scale. The tabs that the Order of Mata Nui must have on Vakama are wild. Even if he never became a Toa, if Vakama was a Matoran who "just" made the Vahi and that was all he ever did, that would still make him one of the most influential beings alive in the whole of the Matoran Universe, and certainly one of the greatest crafters. If he had done that a millenia or two ago, he would have been sent to Artakha just for crafting it. The cosmic scale of the Vahi is unreal and unrealized in canon. maybe that's what Time Trap was trying to accomplish but geez, Vakama
She let her words hang in the air as she waited for Jasuiâs response. This must have all been a surprise to him after all of the time they had known one another. After thousands of years apart though, he had changed too. Not as dramatically, but it was noticeable. He was calmer, more patient, more experienced. She imagined getting away from Fahi Nui was as beneficial for him as it had been for her. Their old team had never seemed to find Unity after becoming Toa and their Duty felt like shackles.
âWell if Iâm being honest, I canât say Iâm surprised!â
âReally?â She replied. The surprise was hers to be had, apparently.
âWell sure! You used to always tell stories about transformation, even after we all became Toa. This just seems⌠right for you.â Jasui leaned back in his seat and rested his arms broadly on the craft as he spoke, body language conveying a comfort that helped her trust his words.
âThank you. It means a lot that you understand. The other Toa I was with were not so kind about it.â
âYou mean they rejected you for trying to be yourself?â
She turned her head to face the open sea ahead of her for a moment. She knew in her core that she had done everything right. That she had become who she was meant to be. She looked back to Jasui so she could be heard over the wind and waves. âIt was worse than that⌠I wasnât the only one on the team to pursue a new identity and the others accused me of copying them instead of finding my own Destiny.â She paused again. Jasui said nothing. âIt felt bad. It made me question myself but when I left and started sailing, it was like the sea washed away all of those doubts. It wasnât me, it was those who I was with that were making me unhappy.â She met Jasuiâs eyes as she finished her thought. He stared back intently. The brow of his Kanohi curled slightly towards the center.
âSure. I get that.â He rose and stood beside her but immediately struggled to steady himself on the vessel. She took one hand from the wheel and caught him around the shoulder. âThanks.â He laughed. That was nice to see. Long ago he had been so consumed with being perfect. Even small stumbles in situations nobody was expecting him to have experience in would send him into a fit. âSo what can I call you now, Sister?â He offered his fist as he spoke.
âRuita.â She replied with confidence as her fist met his. She had been practicing the name in private and it had only felt more like her own each time. âThe Matoran we were protecting, they used the name to describe that Energized Protodermis. The transformative stuff.â
âRuita.â Jasui practiced the name a few times. âI like it.â The boat rocked again and he elected to sit back down. âThank you for coming to tell me. For taking the time to find me. I know things were not always great between us but-â
âNo.â, holdng up her hand for emphasis, she guided some of the surf to splash Jasuiâs mask. âNo more apologizing for who we were. We are who we are now. Things are good. Letâs enjoy it.â She looked back to Jasui and smiled. He shook the water from his mask and matched her.
âThings are good because we are choosing to make them good.â

Ko Matoran Relations
Ko Matoran have a reputation for being hard to get along with. The tribe values peace and quiet to a high degree and their preference for the cold makes them difficult to acclimate to other climates. This is both literal and figurative as Ko Matoran are notorious for staying within their comfort zone. The general trend is that a Ko Matoran will make a friend with a single Matoran from another tribe on their own terms, and then slowly integrate into a larger social circle.
-Ko Matoran treat one another with mutual respect on the surface. Everyone leaves one another to their studies and communicates what is necessary when it is necessary to do so. While we have seen that there can be pettiness and rivalry in canon within the tribe, at the end of the day all Ko Matoran know that they are working towards the same goal each in their own way.
-Ta Matoran embody Duty. Ko Matoran embody Destiny. Culturally, these tribes are straightforward and blunt. A friendship between them would likely stem from working together on a common goal that allows the Ko Matoran to develop emotional trust. Be mindful though, as a disagreement in the method behind the task can strain this relationship.
-Ga Matoran have the easiest time making friends and Ko Matoran are no exception to that rule. High tolerance and empathy is the Ga Matoranâs in to support and befriend the otherwise closed off Ko Matoran.
-Ice and Stone are solid and inflexible, both in literal substance, and often in disposition. The lofty, head in the clouds philosophy of Ko Matoran is typically of little interest to a Po Matoran and the down to earth simplicity of a Po Matoran would likely be of no interest the other way around.
-Diametrically opposed, Ice and Earth are a dynamic that offers a broad perspective. In the event that a bond is formed between members of this tribe, it would greatly expand the perspective of both. Predicting the future is a skill that is bolstered by understanding the past, after all.
-Le Matoran and Ko Matoran are hard pressed to find anything in common. Ice is far too rigid and meticulous. A Le Matoran would appear to be the single biggest hazard to all Ko Matoran hold dear. Noisy, impulsive and overall hyperactive, a relationship between members of this tribe would require quite a bit of compromise from both.
Ko Matoran are difficult to write about without sounding negative. Their preferences are inherently anti social compared to the other tribes and their limitations are harder to overcome. Getting into a warmer, noisier environment with people who donât consider the future the way they do is understandably difficult.
Iâm back.
To do list:
-Finish the âElement Relationshipsâ posts
-Write my thoughts on the Rare Element Tribes
-Bother @outofgloom about âJaâ
-Maintain some kind of personally sustainable connection with the online Bionicle community
Well so much for that. I think I need to finish the Ko Matoran relations post still which Iâve been stuck on because they are hard to write about.
I do still want to write on the rare elements since thereâs a lot of fun headcanon to pick apart there.
Boy howdy I just do not stay on any one project long enough to âmaintain a presenceâ.
Anyway Iâm here for now. Hope yâall like what I do this time around.
âSo thatâs where Iâve been all this time.â Jasuiâs voice was filled with pride and confidence. Zatama stared back at him, unsure how to feel about the tales he had just spun. He knew Jasui had felt confined in Fahi Nui, that much he had made clear after Kytao had disappeared and tensions rose with their Turaga. Zatama had felt it was his duty to stay in this place their initial journey had landed them and so he did. Jasui left in anger. Tenakha had left to see if he could find Jasui or Kytao and Vouku left shortly after to âstrike out on his ownâ, whatever he thought that meant.
âSoundâs like you really went and found yourself.â Was all he could muster in reply. He found brief eye contact with Jasui but found it hard to maintain. It had been four thousand years since they had parted ways. Jasui had changed, clearly. The anger was gone, or at least Zatama wanted to believe that to be true. But what had he done? He had held his post in Fahi Nui with Kokatoro faithfully, leading an uninteresting life and inevitably being overwhelmed by Makutaâs forces and joining a stronger Toa of Fire he had never even heard of to journey beyond what he thought was the end of his universe that he had been tasked with protecting andâŚ
âHey,â Jasuiâs voice cut through the welling anxiety. âI know I left on bad terms. I know we had a Duty and maybe even a Destiny in Fahi Nui. I donât really think things would have turned out differently if we had all stayed together. Six dysfunctional Toa against⌠all of that probably wouldnât have made the difference in the end. But we all survived and now we get to be a part of something new!â He paused, possibly waiting to see if Zatama would re-establish eye contact. Zatama looked up as Jasui offered his fist. âIâd like to do so together, if you would.â
Zatama looked from Jasuiâs fist to his eyes and again felt the urge to look away. He didnât want to. He wasnât ready. The fist hung there, occupying so much more space in Zatamaâs head than it did in physical space. After an amount of time he felt had become awkward, he met it with his own. A lie. A false promise. He was not ready. Jasuiâs very presence and demeanor made him radically uncomfortable but the part of Zatama that was stronger than the part that craved comfort wanted to follow what Jasui wanted. To appease him.
âAbsolutely, brother.â The words were like ice through his vocal array and the clank of his fist against Jasuiâs felt hollow.
Jasui jumped to a standing position on the catwalk where they had been catching up. âStellar! So why donât you show me around this New Ta Metru youâve been helping with!â And as Zatama stood to join him, the pressure of obligation resting so heavy on his shoulders that it made the task feel nearly impossible. If Jasui had felt confined back in their old home, Zatama now felt trapped in his new one.
I am the destroyer of BIONICLE
Do not dare cross me
BIONICLE: "Hello, I'm Takua. I felt aimless and lost in life, constantly feeling like an "other" in my society for reasons I couldn't quite explain. It turns out that I had to go on a journey of radical self-discovery that involved me repeatedly refusing an identity I felt didn't belong to me because it felt like too heavy a burden for someone as wrong as me, as well as me coming face to face with the embodiment of the darkness inside all of us, who urged me to give up the journey. In the end I accepted who I was and underwent a transformation which made me different from those around me, yet brought me into a new community of others like me, and I found within myself the strength to face the burdens that came with that new identity, finally facing my demons."
Also BIONICLE: "We, the former Toa Metru, also underwent radical transformations, ones that caused the government and the police to hunt us and view us as criminals, and brought about strange new emotions and feelings we didn't know how to process. Through it all we worried that there was something wrong with us, that god had made some mistake. In the end we realized that god was in fact on our side, and that there was nothing inherently wrong with us."
Also also BIONICLE: "Gender is inherently arbitrary, and even though they are literally hard-coded to follow gender roles and archetypes, the Matoran break said roles and archetypes all the time. As do other species like the Vortixx, who were quite literally designed as a species of nurses, with all the gendered tropes that implies, only to instead develop into a ruthless matriarchal society of arms dealers. Almost as if ideals of gender don't apply. Ga-matoran are were even made to be women because of the idea that water is inherently gentle and caring and feminine, but not only do characters like Dalu, Hahli "The Barbarian", Helryx, and Tuyet show that this is false, Gali both speaks of and shows that water can be just as destructive and forceful as any other element. That's not even going into matoran of other elements who act in ways we would consider "feminine", or characters like Tamaru, who actively show traits one would expect of another element."
This guy: "wHy WoUlD yOu PuT tRaNs ShiT In MY BiOnIcLe!?"
Onu Matoran relations.
Matoran of Earth are a more cooperative tribe by my understanding. Miners and archivists need to work in teams intrinsically and their patient nature makes it easier for them to consider others before acting. Community orientation and patience are the primary factors that dictate an Onu Matoranâs relationships. If you identify as an Onu Matoran, this may help you better understand your relationships.
-As far as relationships within their own tribe, Onu Matoran make easy friends. Their values are cooperative rather than competitive and their orientation towards history combines with their natural patience to help them understand one another easlily.
-Earth and Water share similarities in a few interesting places. The community oriented mindset is the obvious one, however there is more to see when you compare them to their companion elements of Stone and Ice. While not an actual fluid, Earth (soft soil) is flexible like water, alluding to their more flexible attitudes. The two tribes really bond on the topics of study and knowledge. The two would make excellent study partners and their appreciation for science and history compliment each other well.
-The connection between Stone and Earth is an implied relationship in the series though itâs not terribly well explored. We can pretty easily extrapolate that the foundational way of thinking is shared between the tribes, which is where this connection originates from. Onu Matoran likely appreciate the work Po Matoran do with stone that they carve and itâs a shame no Onu Matoran artists are present in canon. Po Matoran are stubborn and hard headed but the patience of the Onu Matoran make them connect easier. A Po Matoran, preoccupied with their craft would make good friends with an Onu Matoran that would take the time to understand them. It would definitely be a relationship more commonly initiated by the Onu Matoran.
-Air can be a tricky element to get along with no matter what your tribe is. In canon, we see Taipuâs adoration for Le Wahi and the Matoran living there. Patience breeds understanding and the Onu Matoran would be more open to appreciating Le Matoran eccentricities. Seeing a Le Matoran friend is a great excuse to take a break from the norm and for an Onu Matoran the norm couldnât be more different than Le Matoran life.
-Ko Matoran are at the other end of the Past/Future dynamic from Onu Matoran. The dynamic is not well defined as the two tribes are on completely different wavelengths. Where as Onu Matoran are community oriented and communicate frequently, Ko Matoran spend much of their time alone and communicate out of necessity more often than not. A relationship of any kind between the tribes is uncommon, though the two make good teammates as they offer a broad view of any given problem when working together.
-That leaves Fire. Two serious and hardworking tribes for sure. Reliability is the word that comes to mind, a real pair that can get a job done. In canon the only close Ta/Onu relationship we see is between Balta and Garan who represent an inversion of the typical members of their respective tribes. Onu Matoran very much appreciate direction and Ta Matoran live by it so the social dynamic can be very âyou lead I followâ.
Onu Matoran are a tribe that has only one real obstacle when making friends, that being their shyness. Like Ko Matoran, they have comfort zones (partially due to their sensitivity to bright lights making it hard to leave said zone) but their curiosity is a huge motivating factor against that. If you, as an Onu Matoran are looking for connection, your curiosity and sincerity are your greatest tools.

Ta Matoran Relationships
Being the tribe most defined by the virtue of Duty, Ta Matoran relationships are typically built on practicality. A Ta Matoran will become close with those who can be counted on, making reliability a major value in their culture.
-Ta Matoran are shown in canon to be competitive amongst one another. While their sense of duty inclines most Ta Matoran to put work before their own personal feelings, their inclination towards leadership and the importance they place upon themselves as Mask Makers likely make them prideful. Relationships amongst Ta Matoran seem entirely reliant upon the humility of the individuals.
-While natural born leaders, a Ta Matoran appreciates the perspective of Ga Matoran in most dynamics. A Ta Matoran focused on the task at hand may not acknowledge the importance of the nuance Ga Matoran bring to the table. Knowing what needs to be done is one thing, but assigning the right person for the job, accommodating others and communicating in a healthy fashion is how Water supplements Fire.
-Fire and Stone share passion for both creation and completion. In a surface level, these tribes have an easy time understanding one another. They are practical, determined and task oriented, which makes them excellent partners on any job. Beware though, as both elements can be prone to ego and can quarrel worse than any other pairing. This, however comes from a place of both parties wanting what is best but disagreeing on the details.
-Ta Matoran stand out. They usually take center stage in situations requiring action and speak passionately. This creates the kind of intrigue that can prompt an Onu Matoranâs curiosity. Being patient and open to new ideas, an Onu/Ta relationship is likely to take root through something the Ta Matoran does without them being aware of it. A friendly Ta Matoran will find a loyal friend but must take care to not take advantage of the friendship.
-Fanning the flames, Le Matoran and Ta Matoran have an interesting dynamic. Both elements are prone to taking initiative, but their approaches could not be more different. Trying to work together, a Ta Matoran must be both direct with the Le Matoran but also needs to account for their freedom of expression in order to have true harmony. If the two elements can respect and account for one anotherâs methodology, they can find a lot of success together.
-Ice and Fire are elemental opposites, but in the world of the Matoran these things donât necessarily create conflict. Indeed, both tribes are task oriented and have a great propensity for focus. This relationship is one that must be deeply personal. Ko Matoran do not make casual friends and Ta Matoran tend to be close only with those they can truly rely on.
All in all Ta Matoran relationships tend to be businesslike. Their sense of Duty dictates their direction in most things including friendship. Jump on board with a project, be reliable, and you will easily make friends with one.
âThe ocean is healing.â
Thatâs what she kept insisting.
I had met up with a group of Toa I had worked with in the past and Maa immediately recognized that I was not in as good condition as I had been.
Indeed, my armor was a heavily saturated brown, as opposed to the burnt orange it would turn after longer exposure to the Spherus Magna sun. My new role largely had me working in Matoran settlements around the Bara Magna region, giving me less time to be out in nature as I probably should be.
âI believe you,â I said, shuffling awkwardly across the beach. âBut if the waves knock my mask askew, Iâm done.â The sands of the beach was markedly different from the sands of the desert I call home. Itâs missing that layer of rock beneath it that ties it back to its source. The beachâs sands are loose, ever shifting and more effort to navigate than I would have liked. As we approached, I struggled to envision how I would occupy my time bobbing around in the ocean. Thatâs when Maa revealed the extra mask she had been carrying.
âI brought a Kanohi Kaukau for us to share between the team! I thought it would be fun to see if we can see any integration between the sea beasts of Spherus Magna, and our Rahi!â Maa had been a Toa for a long time. So long so that I am still surprised to see that she has not made the transformation into Turaga every time I see them. One might mistake her for a Toa of Water, what with her fondness for the sea, but the gold bands on her Kanohi and armor denoted her as a Psionic Toa. She used her power judiciously to determine what was best for the mental state of her team, despite any outward facade. That had been me during the trip out here. She was right. I needed the time to heal.
The rest of the team took turns with the Kanohi, looking around the tides for interesting signs of life. I waded out into the ocean to join them, minding my step as to not disturb the ecosystem more than necessary. Something that took some getting used to on Spherus Magna was the abundance of small organisms. Most everything inside the old Matoran Universe was large. The bugs, the frogs, the crabs. The revelation that the creatures on this world underwent something called âevolutionâ, as opposed to being designed by a creator had been a difficult one for most of us, but it made them fascinating in a unique way.
âJasui, why donât you give it a try?â One of the other Toa insisted after taking a turn. âI know youâll enjoy it.â Again, she was right. My dour demeanor could hide nothing from the team. I took a moment to admire the mask in my hands. The Kanohi Kaukau was a striking design with its visor and layered, curved top. The Agori say it has âstyleâ. âCome on, whatâs under the water is gonna be waaay more interesting than the mask, I promise!â
I let out a lighthearted laugh as I swapped my own Kanohi with the Kaukau. Other Toa have described feeling a sense of security in the water just from wearing it. Maybe it was my own fears, maybe it was the fact that I had never worn one before, but I felt no such thing. I stared at the water for a moment behind the maskâs visor, knowing consciously that I would be fine while submerged⌠I just had to convince myself.
Out of habit, I took a deep breath in, and curled down, wrapping my arms around my knees. If I felt so out of place, I should do as the stones of the ocean do and simply sink. The view was immediately captivating. Fish, smaller than any I had ever seen darted about. A flat creature, previously cloaked in the sand rocketed away from where I had landed. The feelings of wonder momentarily gave way to panic. I had not been breathing. On a conscious level, I knew I was wearing the Kanohi Kaukau but every instinct in my body told me not to open my mouth. I saw the shapes of the other Toa gathering around, peering below the surface at me. I closed my eyes, focused on the feeling of the sand underneath me, and took a breath in.
Relaxing was still not easy, but I was now past the hardest part. Breathing with the power of the mask, I began to explore the sandy floor with better focus. The small, Spherus Magna fish swam in tandem with a Ruki fish from our world. The larger fish seemed to serve as a leader, or maybe even a bodyguard. Perhaps the larger size and protodermic scales of the Ruki dissuade the predators that would hunt this fish. Perhaps the creativity of the Makuta was intentionally influenced by the Great Beings to recreate the beasts of their world. Could the smaller fish feel some sort of connection to the Ruki, or was it just convenience? It was known that the Matoran people were based on the inhabitants of Spherus Magna. How deep did our connection go?
I was getting lost in the moment. There would be time later to ponder the Great Beings. I had to admit though, the experience was rejuvenating. As the day went on, I did find myself genuinely enjoying my time at the beach. I began to realize why Maa felt that the ocean was healing. Here, there was no conflict. The crash of the waves had no malice and the creatures had no agenda. There was nothing to fix and no one to protect. Just time to be. My only duty here was to enjoy myself.
anyone else find it weird that a major plot point of 2004 bionicle is mask powers being discovered, and yet vakamaâs profession was literally being a mask maker? Like shouldnât he know?
Do kanohi forges just slap a cool mask together and then go âwonder what this one does?â
Somehow this bothered me SO MUCH more in 2004 than it does now.
You gotta remember that above all else, Vakama is characterized by his lack of confidence and preoccupation with Toa Lhikan. Right off the bat, his own team disregards his visions and puts him down. Between that and the urgency of the quest for the Great Disks, Lhikanâs rescue and the other nonsense they endured, it seems at least excusable that Vakama never took the necessary two minutes to say âHey Matau you can shape shift by the way.â Even though the information he has is important, he views himself as unimportant and therefore puts up an awkward mental block around telling others.
As for his own? Some of yâall have already mentioned how his own lack of confidence could hold him back from connecting with his mask. I donât believe he himself ever wonders what his mask is (been a while since I read through all the Metru books though) so it wasnât a matter of him not knowing his power, but a matter of him not trusting himself to use it.
The relationship between a Toa and their Kanohi is not elaborated upon much in canon but I imagine connecting to and using your mask as a fresh Toa may not come naturally. Thatâs why all the masks activate in 2004 in situations of absolute certainty.
But at the end of the day, yes it was a wasted opportunity to have Vakama represent the culture he is so deeply rooted in for the sake of a sort of tacked on âjourney of self discoveryâ quest for each of the team.
Le Matoran Relationships
Le Matoran distinguish themselves in many ways from the other tribes. Their love for motion, be it under their own power or assisted by a mount or vehicle leads them to value instinct above most everything else. This reliance on something unquantifiable intermingles with their risk taking nature in a way that can make them come across as somewhat vain and eccentric.
-Within their own tribe, Le Matoran have been seen with something of a mob mentality when it comes to fun. The tribe has an easy time exciting and motivating one another which is likely what shaped their daredevil culture.
-Fire and Air have been shown many times in canon to serve as checks for one another in a team dynamic. The two elements are quite different in their approaches and mindsets with Ta Matoran prioritizing duty in a very literal sense, and Le Matoran appearing disorganized and carefree. However, the two tribes can always count on one another to meet a problem head on. Their trust for one another is built upon that courage.
-Ga Matoran sit in a funny place in relation to Air. The reckless independence of Le Matoran goes adamantly against everything Ga Matoran hold dear. They value Unity above all else and spend their time by the water so the hydrophobic and wandering Le Matoran make a poor match. However, Ga Matoran know that Le Matoran are the most eager to work with any form of transportation and their impulsiveness make them prime candidates for any experiments the scientific side of the Water tribe may be up to. Be cautious not to let the Le Matoran become a pity project, as a Ga Matoranâs naturally compassionate instincts may lead them to grow protective of a Le Matoran for the wrong reasons.
-Po Matoran create a similarly uneasy relationship as Ta Matoran do with Le Matoran. The competitive nature of Stone and the daring tendencies of Air can lead two individuals from these tribes to become easy rivals. A Le Matoran would be likely to try whatever the Po Matoran was working hard at for fun and the Po Matoran would be inclined to try what they see the Le Matoran do to test their own skill. This, however could lead to a disconnect if one relies on the other for motivation, as the two tribes have very different reasons for doing what they do and dissatisfaction if one were to lose in their joint venture could lead to resentment.
-Are there two tribes more different than Air and Earth? Le Matoran live in the moment and learn by doing, Onu Matoran live in the past and learn from studying. Le Matoran are reckless and impulsive, Onu Matoran are meticulous and patient. Le Matoran prefer the highest of high places where they can be free and explore themselves, Onu Matoran like the deepest of undergrounds where they can be safe and explore what their world was built upon. A relationship here would rely heavily on the patience of the Onu Matoran allowing them to appreciate the Le Matoran in question.
-Ko Matoran in general are considered to be the hardest tribe to mix with others. Like is the case with Earth, Ice and Air culture clash in all the important ways. Ko Matoran would have a hard time adjusting to the noise and hyperactivity of the Le Matoran and Le Matoran would see little point in all the Ko Matoran planning and studying of the future if they donât use it to go anywhere. Some differences are just too great.
All in all, Le Matoran are a tribe that works best with others who are on their level. Their flexibility is reliant entirely on their own interest and attention span so integrating one into a group or project can be tricky. If you want to make friends with a Le Matoran, find out what holds their interest and learn to speak their language.
Bringing this up to the top since itâs from four years ago and the goal of this blog.
Ga Matoran Relationships
The tribe of Unity, Ga Matoran are often the beating heart of any group of Matoran or team of Toa. Their friendly and empathetic nature allows them to easily distinguish the unique strengths and qualities in others and they often put the needs of others before their own. These values allow them to make and maintain bonds that may not come so easily to other tribes.
-Among Ga Matoran, friendship may not always be easy, but camaraderie always is. Whether they are working together as a research team, manning a boat or just enjoying the waters they call home, Unity takes center stage. Ga Matoran likely form stronger personal bonds between embers of their tribe who they feel they can count on the most.
-Water and Fire may not seem like a good mix elementally, but their cultural values could not be more complimentary. These tribes most literally embody Unity and Duty, after all. A Ga Matoran is a Ta Matoranâs best friend as their ability to delegate and accommodate beautifully meshes with Ta Matoran leadership. This can manifest professionally, but also personally as Water can be the necessary emotional support for the often overworked (by their own nature) Fire. Your Ta Matoran value you more than they could ever express.
-A lot of Ga Matoran relationships are defined by their emotional compatability. Stone, with its preoccupation with refinement can create a strong relationship with Water if they allow themselves to be open to Waterâs guidance. Po Matoran can seem stubborn and hard to approach at times, but ultimately knows what is best for them, and friendship with a Ga Matoran is often just that. A rock may fear erosion, but if left in a river will become smooth.
-My immediate thoughts with Earth are that the two should make easy friends. Both tribes are renown for their patience and teamwork. Ga Matoran both literally and metaphorically have access to places Onu Matoran ordinarily would not. This can spark an Onu Matoranâs natural curiosity, which seems like the natural start to their friendship. Though one must be cautious as an Onu Matoran can come to rely on their Ga Matoran to express what they are too shy to.
-The Elements of motion. Water and Air are the tribes that focus most heavily on exploration, though they differ on the vehicle. Le Matoran naturally avoid water, as the feeling of being weighed down by it makes them uncomfortable. When the two can agree though, they can specialize in out of the box solutions to lifeâs problems.
-This is it. This is how Ko Matoran make friends. Water and Ice share something foundational like Earth and Stone do. Ga Matoran not only have the innate emotional intelligence to treat Ko Matoran with the patience they need, but also fundamentally empathize with their pursuit of knowledge. A Ga Matoran can more easily put their ego and preferences aside in order to make a Ko Matoran comfortable and therefore begin to develop a relationship. Mutual respect defines this dynamic.
Ga Matoran are generally considered the easiest element to get along with. They are emotionally in touch and often know the right way to support a friend. If you have a Ga Matoran in your life, treasure them.

Po Matoran in depth.
The culture of Stone seems to differ quite a bit from the other primary Matoran types. The first in depth introduction to the tribes we would see in canon would be through the Mata Nui Online Game. As the player travels around the island, they see the Ta Matoran and their military, the Onu Matoran and their mines, etc. However, the village of Stone lacks a community based job, rather everyone appears to be out for their own personal gain. Artist, athlete, the profession did not seem to matter so long as the Matoran was working to be the best at it. This is reflected in their principle of Creation. The continual refinement of a skill so that it is functional and presentable, if not perfect.ďżź
But how did we get here? What causes the Po Matoran to value these abstract ideals more than any other tribe? For that, we have to explore the beginning of Po Matoran Culture. They began as builders, said to have been the primary construction team in the early days of Metru Nui. Their work created a foundation for the other elemental districts to flourish. The time spent perfecting their tasks would in turn give each Po Matoran a foundation from which they could flourish. Once the necessary work was done, it was time to bend and flex these skills in new ways.
Matoran of all variety are inherently creative. When construction was not going on, what was a Po Matoran to do? They had all the tools and all the skills working with raw material. What else could they do with it? The answer was, apparently anything. Art is often practical skill without practical use. Itâs not hard to imagine a Po Matoran carving the likeness of a Toa they admire, the work being thought of as important and placed in the colosseum, and suddenly every Po Matoran is working to decorate the city.
