So, sometimes one might get really appreciative comments on one's work of fan fiction with detailed feedback like
...and it's like oh wow my heart is full of joy and THEN wow someone has offered to draw pictures of my stories!
...but then it's... oh...
Not appreciating being told my stuff is lovely, then being asked to pay someone else for their work, then turning down an offer I didn't go looking for and being responded to as if *I* am the rude one for not wanting to pay money to a stranger for something I didn't ask for.
Deleted the comments on ao3 and blocked the user, and blocked on discord as well.
EDIT: After I posted this here, a mutual shared a link: https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/33026
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Well FUCK there's scams like this going around :(
I'd redacted that person's username in these screenshots because I thought they were maybe a new artist who didn't understand they were being rude by trying to get more business by contacting others in this way, and I was annoyed but thought they still didn't deserve others ganging up on them about it.
They got my discord contact info and I didn't tell them very much about myself there (aside from my timezone and stuff) and they are now blocked, but still.

A blue-eyed captain James T. Kirk finds himself in an alternate universe where he and his first officer (and lover) meet elder versions of themselves on Earth. The four realize their own attraction to their partner's counterpart, and they all decide to do something about it.
So I posted about this when the video was released January 2024, but here it is also on tumblr (in case it becomes unavailable on vimeo) and a link to it at ao3 in case you feel like bookmarking it there.
Big reminder, folks, that many people, especially veteran writers, are locking their fics nowadays, which means if you don't have an account, you can't see the full library of AO3 and are missing out on a lot of good work. Please go sign up for an account! It's well worth it, and you are missing out on a LOT by not having it.
I've got a few invites to give out (that's how you get to sign up; it's so people don't spam the site) if anyone wants one.
I'm one of many of those locked-my-account writers and I (like many) have over a million words o' story on AO3. Getcher self some of that locked goodness from writers who are going to be your absolute favorites.
Last year (or was it the year before...?) I locked down my (numerous pseudonymous) fics to keep them from being scraped/downloaded for feeding AI. Because seriously, I've already been scraped from enough, and ripped-off-from enough, for any one writer's lifetime. And "my" AO3 stuff is, frankly, some of my best work. (Ironic, much, that I can't publicly "own" it? Sure. But some things you give away, as repayment, or "paying it forward," for what you've been given. Some day, the Feather on the other side of the Scales will make it all right.)
Want to read the stuff that not-Diane Duane-really's many fellow writers-under-pseud are doing under lock? Then just request an invite from a favorite writer. If they've got invites to spare, they're not gonna deny you.
ETA: (because I've had a couple of messages about this) Forgive me, folks, but I am not going to tell you what my pseuds are. That's not info I give out—because, among other things, it brings to naught a significant reason why a published writer writes pseudonymously: to find out if anyone will read and like your work when they don't know who you are.
I'll willingly confess to having been seriously amused by comments on some of my fics that suggested the pseud was plainly a fan of mine and imitating my style: and even more amused by accusations that the pseud was ripping me off. ...Let's just think of these as (wry grin) occupational hazards—mistakes that anyone not in possession of all the facts might make—and move on, gently smiling. 😏
(I have yet to have what [if I'm getting this right] @seananmcguire's apparently had—commenters who say the pseud writes better than the Writer of Name. Probably I should count myself lucky, as my response to this kind of thing is as yet untested—and as I get older, my Sudden Crankiness Quotient seems to be rising...)

I was possessed by some sort of inspiration and energy and wrote in a burst in a plain text doc, so, here's a story (ao3 login required):
The Love of a T'hy'la
by masutra-vedik

Word count: 1,929
Rating: Explicit
Jean-Luc Picard might not want to admit the kinds of erotic thoughts he's had of some acquaintances (including those about James T. Kirk and S'chin T'gai Spock). However, Q picks up on these furtive musings, and decides to make Picard experience their memories as vivid sensations. Despite Jean-Luc's initial hesitation, he finds the experience to be highly enjoyable.
That's it, that's the dove, that's what in the bag there.
So, I wrote these fics myself. Except where mentioned the works are not beta'd (so, mostly not beta'd). My process has mostly been writing foundational scenes in a burst, chipping away at these sentences in a plain text document, then finalizing them with a spell check in LibreOffice Writer before posting (aside from the beta'd fics shared elsewise beforehand). No AI was involved in their creation!!!
And the scraping is so frustrating! But a part of me wonders, amused, if the phrase "erotic telepathic teleconference" is going to show up in unexpected places.
And to further counter the frustration, I am remembering: a non-zero number of people have appreciated things I wrote myself!
"The way you played with language was masterful."
That's going to warm my heart a long while.
"Genuinely the best Spirk fic I've ever read."
I can know that, at least once, for one person, at one point, one fic was the best Spirk fic ever. :,-) :,-) :,-)
Still thinking about the implications of everything, and what can be done to mitigate scraping like this.
On 15 April 2025, the website PaperDemon broke the news that a user by the name of nyuuzyou on the machine-learning platform HuggingFace had scraped artwork and writings across several platforms, notably including AO3, for use in AI training models. This action led to controversy and widespread denouncement of these actions, resulting in heated discussions.
Alright! Sorry for being so absent today! I was building a tool so you can all check your own names on demand.
I am asking that you not talk about it on Hugging Face. I'm sure word will get there eventually, but I'd like to avoid them accessing this as much as possible. Feel absolutely free to spread around Tumblr.
AO3 search tool is here! Use page 1 to search scraped fics by username. Use page 2 to search by work ID (which you'll need to do if you're looking for an anonymous work).
Or you can use this version, which is strongly recommended if you've published more than about 20 fics on the username you're searching.
If you're unsure which to use:
The first link is better if your entire username is a common word. For example, if you're username is just "bread" then you probably can't search yourself in the second link. The first version is way slower, so I recommend trying the second link first and using the first link as a backup option if the second fails.
The first link contains a page to search by work ID. This is good if you have an anonymous or orphaned fic, since that's not going to appear by searching your username.
The second link is better if you have a LOT of fics. It will give you a count of fics so you don't have to add them up. It will show the top 2,000 work results found.
If you have more than 2,000 published works, first off, I am jealous of your motivation. But second, that won't display right on the public version of the tools. You can send an ask or DM to have me do a custom search for you if you have more than 2,000 total works under 1 username.
You can also ask or DM if your entire username is a common word, because you're likely to get drowned out of the search results in that case. Try the tool first, but if it returns a lot of author results for your search, and YOUR name isn't in the results, ask me! There's a decent chance you're in there, but one of the tool's weak points is searching extremely common words.
In case this post breaches containment: this is a tool that only has access to the work IDs, titles, author names, chapter counts, and hit counts of the scraped fics for this most recent scrape discovered in April 2025. There is no other work data in this tool. This never had the content of your works loaded to it, only info to help you check if your works were scraped. If you need additional metadata, I can search my offline copy for you if you share a work ID number and tell me what data you're looking for. I will never search the full work text for anyone, but I can check things like word counts and tags.
Please come yell if the tool stops working, and I'll fix as fast as I can. Version 1 is slow as hell, but it does load eventually. Give it up to 10 minutes, and if it seems down after that, please alert me via ask! Anons are on if you're shy. Version 2 typically loads results within 1 minute and handles most users well.
On mobile, enable screen rotation and turn your phone sideways. It's a litttttle easier to use like that. It works better if you can use desktop.
Some FAQs below the cut:
"What do I need to do now?": At this time, the main place where this dataset was shared is disabled. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to do anything, but I'll update if I hear otherwise. If you're worried about getting scraped again, locking your fics to users only is NOT a guarantee, but it's a little extra protection. There are methods that can protect you more, but those will come at a cost of hiding your works from more potential readers as well.
"I don't want to know!": This tool is 100% optional. If you don't want to know, simply don't click the link. You are totally welcome to block me if it makes you feel more comfortable.
"Can I see the exact content they scraped?": Nope, not through me. I don't have the time to vet every single person to make sure they are who they say they are, and I don't want to risk giving a scraped copy of your fic to anyone else. If you really want to see this, you can find the info out there still and look it up yourself, but I can't be the one to do it for you.
"Are locked fics safe?": Not safe, but so far, it appears that locked fics were scraped less often than public fics. The only fics I haven't seen scraped as of right now are fics in unrevealed collections, which even logged-in users can't view without permission from the owner.
"My work wasn't a fic. It was an image/video/podfic.": You're safe! All the scrape got was stuff like the tags you used and your title and author name. The work content itself is a blank gap.
"It's slow.": Unfortunately, a 13 million row data dashboard is always going to be on the slow side. I think I've done everything I can to speed it up, but it may still take up to 10 minutes to load. It's faster if you can use desktop, but it should work on your phone too.
"My fic isn't there.": If it was published after March 15th, 2025, that was likely after all of the scraping took place. Otherwise, from what I can tell so far, the scraper's code just... wasn't very good, so most likely, your fic was missed by random chance. I am continuing to look for methods to reduce the chances of a work getting scraped anyway, and I will share on this blog if/when I find something that works.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the cost to host the tool! I appreciate you so so so much. As of this edit, I've received more donations than what I paid to make this tool so you do NOT need to keep sending money. (But I super appreciate everyone who did help fund this! I just wanna make sure we all know it's all paid for now.)
(Made some quick edits to the post on 04-May-2025 to update information a bit!)

Jim and Spock have recently begun having sex together, and both very much enjoy the sex they are having- but Spock is uncertain about revealing that he's interested in 'doing it' in a way they haven't yet 'done it'. With a little encouragement, Spock opens up about what he's 'into'.

Just reading about the Star Trek Fotonovels (a series of twelve softcover pocket photonovel books, produced by Mandala Productions and published by Bantam Books during the years 1977-1978) and I was looking at the Memory Alpha page for the book Star Trek: Metamorphosis (the fifth release in the series), and

The K/S Spring Fever works have been revealed! They're all anonymous until creators are revealed on March 26th. I have a couple fics in this collection - good luck trying to figure out which ones are mine 👀👀👀
Time and again, researchers have concluded that slash serves as an excellent source of much needed enrichment (as it supports the emotional well-being of typewriters, and this assists them to more readily respond in a positive manner to potential stressors).
