bro give her a breakkkk omfg
hello again
im back in the fucking building again.....
i need people to get this in their heads. yes, allura was racially prejudiced against keith, but not racist. racism is systematic racial oppression, meaning keith doesn't experience racism for being galra considering the galra empire is her oppressor for committing genocide and ethnically cleansing (nearly) her entire race.
however, prejudice, in this context, is preconceived judgment, suspicion, and hatred of a race. this accurately describes her attitude. she has her entire idea of the galra formed from the oppression she experienced in the hands of them. knowing that, it is merely unfair to keith as he has never participated in the oppression, feeling pushed out, but entirely personal to allura as one of the few remaining survivors of alteas destruction perpetuated by the galra empire.
therefore alluras feelings regarding keith's reveal and even the BOM being galra are entirely valid, despite it being unfair to them and neither having any affiliations nor relations to the empire.
Its not racial prejudice either. You wouldn't call a Black or Brown person "racially prejudiced" against white people because they have constantly been beaten over and over again.
Allura knows who the Galra are, Zarkon was her fathers closest ally and even friend, someone she would've considered as family. The fact that he blamed the destruction of his planet (the one he destroyed himself) onto Alteans, the people hes closest too, shows that Allura isn't acting out against race. These were people she grew up with and now is afraid of and suspicious of for the right reasons.
its not "unfair" to the BOM because they're the "good Galra". Notice that they themselves are Galra supremacists at first. They don't allow non Galra in their forces NOR do they go out of their way to help the people most harmed. Their focus is only being spies for the Empire and considering they're hiding their identities, they become bystanders for the empires actions therefore supporting it. It's not until Allura that they "change". (change as in help others but still have only Galra as their members hence why Keith has the privilege to join.)
It's also not "unfair" to Keith. Yes, he does not have any affiliations with the empire. However, he constantly benefits from just being Galra. Zarkon praises him TWICE, He gets to join the Blades and STILL hold his place as leader without comment, and its implied that his Galra side is what makes him "better". Keith holds privilege above Allura, and we know this because of episodes like "Hole in the sky" where Allura is framed as being in the wrong to Keiths right on Alteans. (its literally a reverse-racism episode). I'm glad you added that he doesn't experience racism! because its true! he experiences privilege instead.
Again to reiterate, you would not call this racial prejudice in fact, you wouldn't call this prejudice at all. In the actual episode where Allura supposedly is, she gives him the cold shoulder. She doesn't know who Keith is and the last Galra she knew killed her people, this isn't prejudice. You wouldn't call a genocide survivor prejudice against the people that have systematically murdered their people and culture entirely.
YES!! Thank you so much for your input! I'm sorry if my wording was off with "racial prejudice". I tried to describe Allura's feelings regarding the Galra Empire and Galra in general but it came off wrong with me using not the appropriate terms.
Also your point with the BOM- yeah, their "rebellion" starts and ends with spying on the Empire. No helping hand to neither their own nor anyone else in the matter. They're just bystanders and therefore support the Empire and its actions. I admit that "unfair" is wrong to use since they literally do not gaf. Furthermore, The Blade's "Knowledge or death" and the Empire's "Victory or death" are direct parallels sharing the same idea with just one word change, ultimately making them both very militaristic and Galra supremacist. Ulaz was dismissed by Kolivan for not following the way of the Galra, that is, upholding the Galra and serving them.
And yes! Keith very much is privileged. I mean, even the writers made sure to center him as much as possible. With Allura giving him the cold shoulder, It's merely "unfair" to him as he's pushed away by someone he considers a friend. In any other way, he benefits from his Galran blood all the time, like you mentioned.
Knowing this, I think it's much more accurate to describe her attitude towards Keith and the BOM as more of suspicion, caution, and distrust. She's one of the few survivors of a genocide and systematic murder of a culture and people PLUS a black woman! Her expressing those things against the very people who destroyed her home is unequivocally valid. Black and brown people have been constantly experiencing racism from white people by microaggressions, being called slurs, beaten, genocided, colonized etc. throughout history and even today. It's not prejudice to act that way towards your oppressors and to call it "prejudice" is insulting to oppressed people as it implies they owe their oppressors something.
Another thing: I have an Ick with the way Allura's suspicion was portrayed. What I mean is that the show doesn't seem to try and sympathize with her as much as it does with Keith. Another example of Keith's privilege and the misogynoir in the show.
I wanna thank you again for your input! <3
Thank you for understanding! and yes exactly! the show almost never lets us take her side nor allow her the space to actually express the shit she went through!!! Allura simply looking for connection to her people is almost never rewarded! Lotor manipulating her, the whole colony harvesting Alteans, her murdered father being called a coward, and her death!!! And shes the only one to get this treatment! not even Coran (who shares the same trauma!) gets beaten down like she does. :/
again, thank you for your understanding :D have a good day!!
