Reading between the lines wasn’t rocket science. Being able to read the difference between a green heart and orange heart was the first thing one learned as part of the Pretty Committee, so Dylan could recognize a crisis. Massie may had disappeared to England, but the woman could see the familiar signs in her former alpha.

“I come in peace,” she assured, unfazed by the attitude from the fake Brit. After designing and styling for the divas she worked with, little could startle Dylan. Not even Massie, who she once so greatly admired. That was the truth of the matter, Dylan realized. She didn’t owe Massie anything; none of them did, but she felt the familiar pull back into their orbits. They had grown up, but some things never changed. Assessing the latest celebrity gossip with Alicia, helping Kristen make flash cards, and brainstorming with Claire - still felt familiar. Like stepping into an old pair of heels.

“So we can’t do anything about the smell, but I know how to at least treat the stain,” she offered. A long time ago, the woman in front of her picked her and taught her to shine. For that reason alone, Dylan acknowledged she owed Massie a favor. “Also, I know they’re not glamorous but I do have a pair of flats for you. It beats walking barefoot in Brooklyn.”

Most of Massie’s sharp edges soften once she hears Dylan’s voice. The claws retract, the prickly thorns wilt away, and Massie turns to fully face her old friend. It was always comforting to know that the Pretty Committee could never be scared away from Massie’s assertiveness, that they could view her at her brattiest and then still show up for that weekend’s sleepover. Most people wouldn’t have had the patience to deal with her. Dylan was never like most people, though, a fact that Massie took for granted when they were young.

“Flats?” Massie’s nose crinkles at the thought of wearing something on her feet that’s shorter than two inches. It wasn’t that she had a complex about her height, but it was much easier for her to look down on others with a couple more inches to support her. Without heels, Massie could feel a chink being formed in her carefully crafted armor. 

But what was the alternative? There was no way she could mark her return to the city with a reputation for wearing stinky shoes. “They’ll have to do, I suppose,” she said with a huff, before catching herself. “Thanks, Dyl. You’re a total lifesaver. If only Humpty Dumpty took a page out of your book and spent less time getting trashed at his own party, and more time investing in eco-friendly footwear.”

Alicia was working. It may not have been the hard hitting story she wanted, but to Dempsey’s credit, it wasn’t something completely vapid. Even if she had her reservations regarding him, an Elle magazine piece wasn’t something to scoff at. It was why she was happy to discuss the impact this business could have on the environment and why such a change was necessary with one of Dempsey’s PR people. 

Yet she could hear Sadie’s shrill voice ringing in her ears as she got the agent’s statement. The gossip mill always ran strong, and it seemed like most of her peers still kept up with old high school gossip. Nothing surprising, and she supposed her fake boob job was one of the least damning things to be discussing. Especially considering the ghosts lurking around her family home.

She wanted to respond to make Sadie’s blood run cold, a simple no, honey. You all were just copying me. But Sadie didn’t need the satisfaction. It was in fact Massie who shut it down, and Alicia could hear it all. The PR agent had since left, but Alicia had an amused look on her face as she and Massie met face to face. “For the record, the stuff on your blog was way better than Page Six anyways.”

Dissecting every minute detail of Alicia’s appearance had become second nature for Massie. In their youth she’d meticulously search for any flaws in the other girls’ outfits of the day, docking points if they didn’t live up to Massie’s rigid expectations. The unspoken rule was that Massie’s own outfits set the standard, and no girl could ever surpass it — Massie wouldn’t allow it. It was interesting to see Alicia dressed without Massie’s judgements in mind; gone was the girl in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren, and in her place stood a boss bitch. Massie had to admit that Sadie had one thing right: Alicia’s boobs looked ah-mazing in that dress.

“Of course it is — I’m not some shitty tabloid desperate for relevancy,” Massie responded swiftly, tucking away Alicia’s compliment for later, when she’d privately dissect every word and tone in which was was delivered. She’s read my blog? She’s read my blog but couldn’t give me a call back? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? “Glad to see you haven’t become a crusader for fake news, either. Though I’m surprised that The Hill would care about a shindig like this.”

Why would Massie Block, of all people, be in Brooklyn, picking at an almond croissant? Two words: Alexandra Regan. A Loser Beyond Repair in high school, but now the managing editor at Penguin House. And Massie’s ticket to getting a book deal.

Too bad Alexandra kept brushing her off and only seemed to only have eyes for... Was that Kemp Hurley? Wearing sneakers to brunch? Alexandra seemed to have no issue with his poor choice in footwear, giving him her business card and a flirtatious smile all while Massie crumbled up her croissant in a jealous rage. How was Kemp Hurley getting Alexandra’s number before she did? As soon as Alexandra stepped away and headed for the restrooms, Massie swooped in to grab Kemp’s attention.

“One: Those trousers don’t go with Ozweegos. If you’re seriously incapable of leaving the house without sneakers, then go for Superstars next time.” A lot of things may have changed for Massie, but it seemed like she was unable to hold back on her unwarranted fashion critiques. But it’s not as if Kemp wasn’t seriously in need of them. “Second: What did you say to Alexandra? Why is she fawning all over you and not over me and my blog?”

“Do I want to know why you were coming out of a car with my loser ex?” Probably not the friendliest greeting, but Massie was never a fan of pleasantries, opting to cut to the chase whenever she could. Besides, if she got Claire talking about herself, then Massie could draw attention away from the fact that she was stuck wearing Dylan’s commuter flats. She was in no mood to rehash Dempsey’s problematic stomach reflexes.

Referring to her first real boyfriend as a “loser” also probably wasn’t going to make Massie appear as approachable as she wanted to be. But this whole party had set her on edge. Alicia had been hanging around Claire the second the Floridian stepped out of the car, leaving Massie to feel more like a third wheel than ever before. How was she supposed to worm her way back next to Claire’s side when Alicia seemed to be permanently stuck there? And now when she finally did have an opportunity to talk to Claire, she sounded more like an interrogator than a concerned friend. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but if you’re looking for a fling... you can do so much better than our former high school classmates.” That didn’t sound too judgy, right?

The universe was out to humble her. Massie felt like she was the butt of some grand cosmic joke — how else would she have managed to get Humpty Dumpty barf on her designer heels for the second time in a single decade? Turns out the standards for a start-up launch party weren’t that much higher than a high school rager.

Her VEERAH heels looked like they were beyond repair, but that didn’t stop Massie from leaning over the bathroom sink and attempt to wash out the vomit from the vegan silk. Dempsey was so getting billed, for both her shoes and the therapy session Massie was booking as soon as she got back into Manhattan.

The bathroom door opened, and Massie immediately barked out, “Occupied!” Two other people had attempted to get into the public bathroom, only to be immediately scared off by Massie’s dark aura. At some point, someone was bound to leak the story of Massie's fashion emergency, and she was doing everything she could to avoid getting caught barefoot in Brooklyn.

It took all of Massie’s willpower to not drink the bar dry. It was cruel to force her to converse with her former classmates, who all were acting as if they were her equals now that they were no longer stuck in a rigid high school hierarchy. Sure, Massie wasn’t the Queen B(itch) of OCD anymore, but that didn’t mean she wanted to play catch-up with Sadie Meltzer, who had trapped her in a conversation just to prove that she was as obnoxious as ever.

“I can’t believe Alicia’s boobs somehow got even bigger since high school. I heard that she got them done by the same doctor who did Heidi. Is it true that she always stuffed her bras in sch—?” 

And here Massie thought that she was done with the hallway gossip. “Do I look like I write for Page Six?” Massie snapped, cutting Sadie off mid-sentence. It sounded like the set-up for a classic Massie Block insult, but unlike Sadie, Massie had grown up since high school. For the most part. And Sadie wasn’t worth the punchline. Giving her nothing more than an eye roll, Massie turned away from Sadie with the clear intent on leaving the embarrassing conversation. Only to come face-to-face with Alicia, who had been well within earshot for who knows how long. 

“ I think his fiancé traded up, ” she muttered in return, raising her eyebrows at the pitiful sight of Dempsey stumbling out of the bushes, a sight reminiscent of senior year debate tournament parties. Even the cheating rang too true to years ago—hadn’t his high school girlfriend hooked up with the 2nd place winner of their biggest rival? Poor, poor Dempsey. 

“ Wow, Dempsey, you still can’t hold your alcohol, ” she deadpanned, to which she heard a slurred fuck you, Kristen. She smiled at him over the rim of her champagne flute, irritation and amusement warring on her features. And she was having such a nice conversation. “ Some people really don’t, ” she added to Massie, glancing back at her. “ Do you think he’ll find his way back? He is the host. ” What should we do with him? hung unspoken in the air while Dempsey was already spearheading a campaign against his fiancé ( or should she say ex? ), attempting to find his way towards wherever he’d seen them last. “ Jesus, imagine getting this fucked up at your own launch party. ”

The last thing Massie expected from a dull startup launch party was a love triangle between Humpty Dumpty, his fiancée, and one of the cater-waiters. Nor did she expect to hear about it straight from the mouth of the drunk entrepreneur. It would’ve been funny if it wasn’t so sad. 

“Humpty Dumpty had a great fall...” Massie’s eyes narrowed at the sorry sight: Dempsey Soloman stumbling through the bushes, sullying his glow-up the same way he sullied his last-season Tom Ford suit with hollandaise sauce. It was clear that the mimosa in his hand was far from his first, and Massie felt a sickening wave of déjà vu wash over her. No, she still hadn’t forgotten that junior year party when he ruined her studded Valentino heels. Massie may not have held grudges anymore (well, for the most part), but it was clear that Dempsey hadn’t changed. Or at least, he hadn’t learned how to pace himself at parties. “Some people never change, do they?” she muttered to Kristen, who she’d been having a pleasant conversation with before the party host crashed it. “All good there, Dump— Dempsey?” Massie called out, though it was clear to anyone looking that he was far from okay. Thankfully, the only people there to bear witness to his messiness were Massie and Kristen. Unfortunately, they were the last two people who wanted anything to do with him.

SPOTTED: MASSIE BLOCK AT THE SYNTHESIS LAUNCH PARTY

Let the record show that Massie wouldn’t have trekked all the way to Brooklyn for Humpty Dumpty’s little tree-hugger startup if there wasn’t something in it for her. But because Dempsey had the foresight to invite their most esteemed former classmates — including Penguin House’s newest managing editor — Massie figured it was worth a trip off the island to rub some elbows. It was high time her blog made an appearance on the NYT bestseller’s list, and if Massie actually secured a book deal out of this event then she’d even include Dempsey’s name in the the special thanks section.

MEGA SABLEYE: It blocks any and all attacks with its giant-sized gemstone. However, the stone's a heavy burden, and it limits Mega Sableye's movements. This Pokémon is feared. When its gemstone eyes begin to glow with a sinister shine, it's believed that Sableye will steal people's spirits away.
