Alicia couldn’t help the brightened smile at Dylan’s compliment. It wasn’t that she wasn’t thinking the same, but it was nicer hearing it from one of her girlies rather than ruminating about it herself. It had been a while since she was content in a relationship for the most of it, she’d have to revisit some of her choices next time she dates someone. “I agree. But you didn’t hear it from me.” She playfully smirked before both brows raise in realization. “How could I forget? He looked so tacky anyways.” She scoffed, nodding slightly. “I guess history may repeat itself for someone else tonight.”

“Excuse me, could you get us a refill of sangria?” Dylan asked the waiter with a playful grin after she dropped off a basket of freshly baked rolls for the table. If Dempsey wanted the original pack in attendance, then a reminder of the antics that followed them was expected. Besides, a white dress and white chinos for brunch....how brave of them. “I love that for them,” she laughed. “Frankly, I’m surprised you didn’t end it with him earlier.” Though she had no doubt Claire probably voiced the same sentiment to Alicia, after all it was clear to everyone who had Alicia’s attention.

The universe was out to humble her. Massie felt like she was the butt of some grand cosmic joke — how else would she have managed to get Humpty Dumpty barf on her designer heels for the second time in a single decade? Turns out the standards for a start-up launch party weren’t that much higher than a high school rager.

Her VEERAH heels looked like they were beyond repair, but that didn’t stop Massie from leaning over the bathroom sink and attempt to wash out the vomit from the vegan silk. Dempsey was so getting billed, for both her shoes and the therapy session Massie was booking as soon as she got back into Manhattan.

The bathroom door opened, and Massie immediately barked out, “Occupied!” Two other people had attempted to get into the public bathroom, only to be immediately scared off by Massie’s dark aura. At some point, someone was bound to leak the story of Massie’s fashion emergency, and she was doing everything she could to avoid getting caught barefoot in Brooklyn.

Reading between the lines wasn’t rocket science. Being able to read the difference between a green heart and orange heart was the first thing one learned as part of the Pretty Committee, so Dylan could recognize a crisis. Massie may had disappeared to England, but the woman could see the familiar signs in her former alpha.

“I come in peace,” she assured, unfazed by the attitude from the fake Brit. After designing and styling for the divas she worked with, little could startle Dylan. Not even Massie, who she once so greatly admired. That was the truth of the matter, Dylan realized. She didn’t owe Massie anything; none of them did, but she felt the familiar pull back into their orbits. They had grown up, but some things never changed. Assessing the latest celebrity gossip with Alicia, helping Kristen make flash cards, and brainstorming with Claire - still felt familiar. Like stepping into an old pair of heels.

“So we can’t do anything about the smell, but I know how to at least treat the stain,” she offered. A long time ago, the woman in front of her picked her and taught her to shine. For that reason alone, Dylan acknowledged she owed Massie a favor. “Also, I know they’re not glamorous but I do have a pair of flats for you. It beats walking barefoot in Brooklyn.”

it’s not that cam doesn’t like rain. it’s just that, well, a whole week of it in the summer is a bit excessive, isn’t it? it doesn’t help that they’d had to work early today on top of everything else. after spending hours in the studio, cam had finally had enough and decided to call it a day, choosing instead to stop by a small shop in chelsea for something to give them some energy. as they walk out they nearly bump into someone and in order to avoid doing so, they sidestep and loose their foothold, iced coffee flying and cam slipping directly into a puddle in the process. a deep breath in place of the scream cam wants to let out and then they stand. “this day gets better and better,” he sighs to himself.

she didn’t have to acknowledge cam’s presence; she really didn’t have to. because at the end of the day, dylan remembered how much trouble cam fisher caused for her group of admittedly distant friends, but an annoying voice that sounded like kristen reminded her of a similar incident. “here,” she offered them her hand. maybe being kind took more strength, or maybe she didn’t need this moment coming back to haunt her.

“do you want to step back inside? they probably have a towel you can use.”

the easier way to avoid a party like this would have been not returning at all. todd is lucky that she gave a damn about him. sure, claire could have made up an excuse to get out of this almost high school reunion but since it was dempsey arranging it, she figured she’ll make a quick appearance as a favor before heading out — not a late one. thankfully the girls were here. “ well, only if you insist, ” claire teased before ordering herself a watermelon mimosa. “ ugh, yeah. she was texting me about him. has anyone punched him yet? because violence is vegan and i do have two fists. ” was she joking or serious? no one will ever know. “ please tell me i didn’t miss like the best moments of this whole thing and the party is now fizzing out. ”

as big as new york city was, sometimes dylan felt like the world was too small. or maybe, dempsey needed to get over what happened in high school based on the seating arrangements. “he has it coming for sure. god, i don’t know how alicia stayed with him for as long as she did. before i saw you, i think he was going to start talking about his stock portoflio,” she told claire. yes, meddling in the girls’ love lives was a no from dylan, but gossiping was its own category. plus she was talking to claire, the least uptight person she knew. “we can always start something. i heard talk of a flash mob,” she smirked.

Alicia’s eyes playfully narrowed at Dylan’s jab, though she was aware that Dylan was also being sarcastic. “Yes! That’s exactly it. I was thinking about which bitchy little dog he’s like.” She grinned, finally feeling a little bit better since sitting down. “Always nice, always looking out for the next big thing. I’m not surprised he’s here.” She shrugged, before her lips purse in amusement with a nod. “I was wondering if someone was going to get punched. Can we talk about the white pants? How brave.”

alicia always did have a fondness for purse dogs, dylan thought as she sipped her mimosa. it’s not she didn’t like the people she dated, because honestly dylan learned a long time ago it was best to avoid meddling in that aspect of her friends’ lives. instead, she was just tired of hearing about people who couldn’t keep up with alicia. “looks more like he downgraded,” she winked. “remember what we did at the astor wedding junior year?” she asked. even now, she argued what she and alicia did to the cheating groom was fair game. plus who still wore white tuxes in the 21st century?

"so update me, what happened with dempsey?” she asked as she passed her friend a plate of food. although she and alicia shared a penchant for gossiping, dylan didn’t care for the unnecessary fluff that their friend had a habit of using to build up anticipation. maybe she was impatient, or she just understood how short the shelf life gossip truly was. “last i heard, he was still pissed about what happened with derrick,” she explained, avoiding the mention of layne. what kristen and claire had seen in the woman was beyond her, but layne wasn’t even important today. no, all eyes were on their host.

the moment she stepped through the doors, she had started hoping that the uber never arrived in the first place. how easy could it have been to text dempsey with a quick apology and use the excuse of traffic? claire had hoped to just leave high school in high school, not to see everyone in the same room all at once. honestly, she had no idea what she was getting herself into when accepting the invitation other than supporting an old friend. but now she’s here and there’s no more excuse. thank gawd she spotted dylan when she did. “ if one more person asks me if pancakes are vegan, i’m running out of that door. ”

naturally, claire would be in attendance at today’s party. if the whole pitch wasn’t already up claire’s alley, the fact dempsey had never been subtle about his feelings regarding the woman was enough evidence. like who else but dempsey solomon would write an essay on instagram? “tell them to lay off the mimosas,” she smiled, surprised by claire’s late arrival. “speaking of which, you need at least two drinks first before i fill you in on what happened,” she stated before leading claire over to the bar. the mini high school reunion was expected, because it was dempsey solomon after all but dylan hadn’t expected so much to happen in less than an hour. “first of all, alicia’s ex is here. the one with the uneven jawline,” she started.

Out of all the terrible things Alicia had done in her life, she was certain that being seated with her ex and his fiancee was her payback. Anything she’s done before had landed here here, but at the very least she had Dylan besides her. Alicia was sitting besides Dylan, her back pin straight and a face that suggested she was both disinterested in Michael’s story on how he met her fiancee (so shortly after Alicia had dumped him- of course) but so happy for them obviously. Grateful that both of them had gotten up to get drinks, Alicia’s gave Dylan a look with a raised brow. “Before you ask, he wasn’t like that when we met.”

brunch was as crucial to dylan’s plans for the weekend as last night’s trip to onyx, the newest speakeasy on the nightlife scene. even so, launch parties typically weren’t her scene. in fact, this morning she had a good laugh when she learned alicia and kristen were also headed to brooklyn. for dempsey solomon of all people, but there was a singer attending she hoped to innocently run into today at the party.  “he’s nice,” she interjected, looking up once the heinous pair finally left their table. she was quite familiar with man seated on the other side of table, having seen his face several times on instagram before alicia did a cleanse. “reminds me of a chihuahua,” she said blasely. “did you see her burberry bag?”

i consider a day perfect if i manage to get through my to-do list. sometimes the list is something minor like taking the trash out, other times it’s stuff like doing meal-prep and whatever errands i need to get done that day.

lol, so dylan definitely isn’t my usual type of characters. she’s unapologetically sparkle and glamour, but what has been helping me with nailing her voice is asking the following questions:

what do you wish you knew as a teenager?

what can you do to help others from repeating your mistakes?

what’s your relationship with your mother like?

how do you define sibling rivalry?

lopunny: lopunny is constantly monitoring its surroundings. if dangers approaches, this Pokémon responds with superdestructive kicks.

bellossom: when it dances, its petals rub together and make a pleasant ringing sound. they say that the dance is a ritual to summon the sun.

azumarill: azumarill can make balloons out of air. it makes these air balloons if it spots a drowning pokémon. the air balloons enable the pokémon in trouble to breathe.

nidoqueen: nidoqueen's body is encased in extremely hard scales. it is adept at sending foes flying with harsh tackles.

meloetta: its melodies are sung with a special vocalization method that can control the feelings of those who hear it.
