I have an infinitesimal chance to get into a prestigious Parisian school but a peasant can still dream right ? I wanna climb that social ladder, meritocracy be damned !!!!
Don't stop talking about Palestine. While the world moves on, our families continue to live with fear, loss, and displacement every day. Please do not let our story be forgotten, and do not let silence cover the suffering of our children. Be a voice for us—your share may bring hope to those who have nothing left but hope. 💔
Gaza is bleeding in silence, and its pain is not a story to be told it is a reality that people live every single day. Do not leave it alone to face fear, hunger, and loss. Be a voice for those exhausted by war, and share their suffering so that their pain is not forgotten by the world's conscience.
Every share you make could be the difference between life and death for our children.

An abandoned theater in Rochester, New York. Formerly a pornographic theater, then just a facade after the Walgreens next door gutted it to use as a warehouse. The Walgreens with it's shampoo and baby formula and half of the store locked in cages; the contradictions stare into you. You go because it is the nearest pharmacy, close in walking distance for you and your disabled loved ones.
The Walgreens shuts down and it too, is now just a vacant facade, next to a vacant facade. You stare into the large windows meant to advertise it's contents, now only showcasing absence. A wide open space with torn up floors. You think about how perfect the location could be for low income housing, for squatting, for anything other than standing as a constant reminder of the city's failures to her people. The parking lot is empty, save for the occasional cop car, to ensure no one uses the lot or the building for anything at all. The cop ensures the space will stay as useless as himself.
They add letters to the theater's marquee; a reminder and encouragement of surveillance. "If you see something, say something. In progress call 911, over and done call 311." They board up the doors, ensuring that the space will stay in it's intended form: empty, useless, an eyesore that reminds everyone of their place. The freshly boarded up door has been emblazoned with a message from those who lack.
"A man would shelter, if he could / in the nook behind this new plywood / the building, abandoned / the man is too / how I wish you'd imagine / that it were you."
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918): 1) “Judith I” (1901), oil on canvas, 42 x 84 cm, and 2) “Judith II” (1909), oil on canvas, 46 x 178 cm.
Ough
but like this is what people mean when we say child sexual abuse is separate from "pedophilia". much of the sexual abuse that happens to children is not remotely driven by sexual attraction and its not even necessarily something like "traditional" sexual assault. it is the inability to see children as human. its the way children are legally and socially extensions of their parents, they are objects, so you can control them and touch them however you want. the parent is not seeking nor gaining sexual gratification out of it! thats the point! it is not the result of aberrant sexuality. its not even that parents are just in the best position to get away with sexually abusing their children (though this is also true). it is not that "pedophiles" intentionally seek to become parents to abuse their children. its that children are expected to be abused. we call it "parenting".
this is what youth liberation and family abolition is about btw. this is what we mean when we say the family must be abolished, for it is the family structure that allows and is structured on this abuse of children
I'm considering adding an aroace background to my usual profile picture but ☝️ i feel like the tiny cockade replacing the calibration circle on the record is funnier. It's been there the whole time too lol
in my last botany lab the professor had a prepared slide of diatoms set up for us to look at and i was not prepared for how delightful the slide looked

project hail mary and the martian are perfect foils of each other.
the martian is the story of one man stranded on mars with barely enough food and supplies to last him a calendar month, let alone the 14 that it inevitably takes to bring him home.
mark watney's rescue means millions of dollars in unplanned expenditures, cooperation between multiple nations that frankly have no stake in the life of one american astronaut, and risking the lives of 5 of his crew members. it is a story that makes you tackle the fundamental question of: "how much is one human life worth?"
the answer, the book (and its equally well-executed movie adaptation) offers, is everything.
they could have simply called it a day and told him that it was untenable, that they cannot possibly be asked to risk the lives of the rest of the ares iii crew. but they did not. they did not, because they deemed that no cost was too high if it meant that there was even a snowball's chance in hell that they could bring that one man home.
project hail mary, on the other hand, is a complete 180.
here, the fate of an entire planet's survival rests upon the shoulders of one rather unremarkable man. ryland grace is a middle school science teacher, whose only claim to fame is a controversial research paper. it is a story that forces you to confront the question: "how much do you personally owe humanity when its fate hangs in the balance?"
once again, the answer is everything.
ryland is not the brightest person on the planet, nor is he the bravest. he doesn't choose to be involved in saving earth, and he certainly doesn't choose to be sent on a suicide mission away from it. in project hail mary, one man has no choice but to shoulder this burden for the sake of humanity. and, it turns out, he's not the only one carrying this responsibility.
somehow, both books provide the same answer and message, only in somewhat different ways. they both serve to convey that life, no matter the scale, is worth preserving.
that when it comes to one man stranded 140 million miles away, no cost is too high, no risk too big, because his life matters. he matters. and he matters not just because he volunteered to go up there, or because it wasn't his fault, or because they know he's out there. he matters because he exists, and that is more than enough to do everything possible to bring him back.
or that no personal cost is too high to pay if you are the one person that can actually save humanity. the people may be faceless, nameless crowds to you, but their lives are worth saving simply because they exist. they exist, and that is plenty reason to doom yourself to certain death if it means that there is even a single chance in hell that you will save them. you don't have to be talented, or remarkable, or necessary to matter.
you exist, and that is enough for you to matter.
the Martian vs project Hail Mary is so funny because you’ve got one where they’re very slowly making a spaceship to bring a guy home and another one where they make a spaceship really fast to send a guy into space forever
It's so over (got stranded on Mars) we're so back (I can grow food here) it's so over (we left a guy on Mars) we're so back (we've established communication) it's so over (the airlock exploded and the crops froze) we're so back (we've cut down the launch window for a resupply) it's so over (the probe exploded) we're so back (the space program in China has been working on their own probe that can launch in the correct window to get him supplies) it's so over (we didn't tell the hermes crew about a separate possible mission) we're so back (the hermes crew committed mutiny and are now on the way to save Watney) it's so over (we have to remove the front of his spacecraft to get him into space) we're so back (we can cover the hole with a tarp) it's so over (the tarp ripped off during launch and the distance between the hermes and the mav is too wide) we're so back (we can use remaining thruster fuel to course correct) it's so over (if we do this we'll be going too fast) we're so back (we can build a bomb and blow up part of the station to slow us down) it's so over (there's still too much distance between the Hermes and Watney) we're so back (he poked a hole in his suit and flew to us like iron man)

Girl stop boasting about how "you uncovered the true me". That was like perhaps 1/8 of the true me. Like perhaps 3/16 of the true me to be precise.
adults with direct control over children aren't mistreating those kids by random mistake. random mistake doesn't translate into systematic oppression. adults with direct control over children mistreat those kids because the adults stand to materially benefit from that control. in order to criticize the mistreatment, you must also be able to accurately criticize the cause.
and fwiw adults with direct control over children aren't mistreating those kids because these specific adults were Born Evil either.
it's because they stand to benefit!! like with all oppression and abuse, it's a flow of power. those who act in abusive ways have material incentive to act like that, and often are even disincentivized from ending that abuse or making amends.
adults who harm kids look like normal people. they look and act "good" outside of those instances of harm. they have friends and successful lives. they're smart and charming. even the best adults are at risk of causing harm because every adult is susceptible to furthering the abuse and oppression of youth, even you! the cause is not a few random unrelated oopsies. the cause is not a few bad apples that popped up out of nowhere who you can scapegoat. the cause is that our society in structured in a way that gives adults complete and unquestioned authority over kids and then benefits the adults who use that authority to mistreat them.
