What every Morally Complex™ roleplaying video game needs is an extra button alongside "Accept Quest" and "Accept Quest [lie]" for "Accept Quest [deliberately misconstrue objective]". Sometimes everyone involved in a particular quest line is such a colossal prick that the only morally correct choice is to Amelia Bedelia them.

I don't mean this to be trivialising, but what really gets me about the bigoted attitudes on display in original flavour Vampire: The Masquerade is how antiquated those attitudes were even when the game was new. Like, yes, it's got all the usual suspects on display, but it also hates Italian people and has very peculiar ideas about the Irish. This is a game that came out in 1991.

I've said it before but a favorite recurring white wolf habit of mine is how all these devs seem to realize months after release that [X creature or order the game is about] is really European in origin and mythos. and rather than just say "the world of darkness is full of mystery and horror in every nation and this game only covers part of it" or some other easy answer they just. Panic and release the most orientalist supplement you've ever seen in your fucking life

My 'favorite' is when they just straight up released a game whose title was a slur. And just...everything to do with Pimp: The Backhanding.

The reason the Forgotten Realms is the most boring Dungeons & Dragons setting has very little to do with its inspirations and a whole lot to do with being fundamentally ill-matched to the circumstances of its publication. The Realms are basically a pastiche of every esoterically horny romantic fantasy setting that every B-list Mercedes Lackey wannabe ever came up with, except to keep it corporate friendly they had to take out all the femdom and dragon-fucking, and that's just not an environment in which the material can thrive. Fans keep talking about how to "save" the Forgotten Realms, but frankly, at this point the only thing that's going to save it is taking it away from Hasbro and giving it to some microscopic indie studio whose lead writer got banned from TikTok for discussing their werewolf mommy kink a little too sincerely.
