Thinking about that scene in the book where the astronauts and the rest of the science team is watching the rocket launch. It’s where Grace tries to tell everyone that he’s just your average researcher before being throughly corrected. While the launch takes place, the scientists behind Grace basically push him into the back of the couch where the astronauts are. It felt like a beautiful piece of symbolism and foreshadowing. Grace’s progress with his work is interconnected and built off of the contributions of the whole scientific community. At the same time, it’s the same force that’s pushing him towards his fate.
IronFox has consumed my soul.
look at his pretty smile im going to fling myself into the sun
there's something to be said about how grace ended up "enjoying it". as in, he was forced into the position on the ship, but ended up making rocky as a friend and actually did end up saving earth. i wonder a lot about what that did to him psychologically. he must have hoped on some level that he would have failed, because then his protests would have meant something, and he would have been right, and they would have been wrong. but because that isn't the case, he has to live with the fact that he actually did complete what they sent him out to do, and they were right, and he even enjoyed it a little.
yeah. i think we get a pretty clear idea of the psychological impact it had in the final scene, when rocky informs grace that the hail mary is equipped to return to earth, and all he has to do is say the word. the way grace's body language and expression convey visible relief when he realises that rocky isn't telling him to leave, but asking him to stay. while i don't think the revelation was immediate, i'm certain that grace felt nothing short of saved by the realisation that he wouldn't be able to return to earth. that he had not only the choice but the desire to turn back for rocky. because everyone on earth is, in a way, complicit in grace's violation, through either ignorance or - as carl demonstrates - inaction. stratt made the call to sedate him, but it took multiple people working with her to catch him and pin him down and force him onto that one-way trip. how many other people on earth would have done the same in their shoes, if it meant the best possible chance of saving the world? if it meant that at least it didn't have to be them, or those they love? to return would mean living with the burden of that, either internalising it to avoid tainting the world's pride and joy in the success of the mission and dying with it as a shameful secret, or being subjected to endless relitigation and spectacle. going "home" was never an option from the moment he was recruited.
we also get a pretty clear glimpse into his state of mind when he says to stratt "at least i never have to hear you say i told you so, even though you were right". that "even though" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there (even though you hurt me, even though i should have died - it's a more common backhanded compliment than you might think, as a survivor, to be told "if i were you i'd have killed myself" - even though i was afraid, even though i said no). and that's not to say that i think he blames stratt (or carl, for that matter) at all - that farewell video is his gift of forgiveness, or at least understanding that all the power in the world and the choices she made with it don't make her any less of a martyr than him, for her. even though she was right. even though he enjoyed it.

i'm sure someone's said this before
but bloodymary but its like the summer hikaru died where the monster/eldritch horror in/part of simon has also kind of fallen in love with grace?
one of the last scenes of the movie is grace saying goodbye to earth. a real goodbye, this time
his last conscious moments on earth, he was pinned down, screaming and crying and desperately clawing at the grass as he was ripped away from home
but this time, he calmly and confidently takes a seat in front of the camera, wishes humanity well in his absence, and signs off before he heads off to sacrifice himself
guys
he got to sit down and do it differently.
they throw stratt in jail for life but world renowned, white european political prisoners don't get the short end of the stick in terms of prison arrangements. she's not in some overcrowded unsanitary hole of a women's prison, she was the most politically powerful leader on earth for god's sake. she was put there by important people already in charge, people who would still want to keep in contact with her from time to time. no, she'd have her own nice, clean cell: a bed, a desk, her own bathroom. she'd be allowed phonecalls and letters and meetings, they probably wouldn't allow her unmonitored internet access but they would bring her newspapers and maybe even leave her a tv so she can watch the news.
and she would eat well. the food would be good. it wouldn't be anything restaurant grade, but it would be clearly something prepared for her. and she would look down at her plate and her brain would run leclerc's calculations for their global food resources and she would ask herself how many people in her world are going hungry because there's systems in place to keep people like her fed like this. and her throat would close around every bite.
me when im confronted by the fact that i refuse to accept; im a horrible parent and no one knows
ok awesome, tumblr decided to just send my post into the void so here we go again:
elli came free with simon, meaning when he first woke up, he threw up a clump of flesh and… ta-daaaa! small elli materialized on our plane of existence.
simon is like the dad who didn’t want a cat, he kept his distance from her while grace figured out wether they could keep her around safely or had to throw her out into space (which he reaaaally didn’t wanna have to do, i mean, look at her cute lil legs!! she’s such a good, wiggly, little girl!!). once they were sure she wasn’t dangerous simon warmed up to her pretty quickly.
they’re connected in a cosmic horror kinda way, she can more or less sense him from anywhere even if her eyesight is really bad. simon can’t do anything special (except be very loving and caring towards her).

yes, now
from this post . So big brain
Grace: Oh yeah, when I was a teen, I was really into conservation. You know, protesting development, volunteering for environmental groups. Things like that. Ooh, I remember once chaining myself to a tree so they wouldn’t cut it down. I even helped run a summer camp to teach kids about nature and how to identify different plants.
Simon: ….. Take off your clothes.
Comic idea by @the-b1ah under my bloodymary swap au. This was really funny to draw LMAO

i think stratt should have a wife. not for any particular reason other then having her wife divorce her during the events of the book
i just think it would be funny if in the middle of an arguement with her taskforce leaders shes like “i’m sorry, i overreacted. my wife is divorcing me”
and in several order, grace is like
1. wow holy shit she said sorry
2. SHE HAS A WIFE?
3. AND IS GETTING DIVORCED?
*quickly double checks the calendar *
4. DURING PRIDE MONTH????
✨ Stargazing aboard the Hail Mary ✨
Rotating them around my head like a civil war butter churning centrifuge, and I have a cold so I don’t know if this makes sense or not - please be nice! 💜
