Reiner has needed to hear these words the entire show. Someone who BELIEVES in him. After everything he was made to suffer, everything he was brainwashed and tortured to do.. wanting to be a hero for his homeland and wanting to just be LOVED and accepted, especially by his parents.. he is now. By Jean. I don't know if it's romantic subtext, but it's definitely a deep connection. Forgiveness and acceptance is some of the best love anyone could ever receive.. to me, Jean took the place of Marco in this instance. He gave Reiner strength, and that helped his resolve in the end.
