And like, each time I’m assumed to be an avid fanfiction fan and within that culture, getting judged by their assumptions and receiving condescending comments (I only read what my friends write. I really do not like, or involve myself with broader fanfic culture, it’s wildly bigoted). There’s misogynistic undercurrents. And I kinda wonder if this is because fanfiction is seen as a “female activity”. There’s no gender attached to amateur writing about pre-existing stories, obviously. But society attaches gender to it anyways. Especially with the supposed idea that fanfic originated with housewives who liked Star Trek. And the commonality of the term “fujoshi” being gendered. I haven’t seen as much gendering of modders, and likewise have seen less (but not negligible, often on gendered or racial lines) harassment of modders.
