Milestone Monday
On this date, September 9, in 1543, Mary Stuart, at nine months old, wasĀ crownedĀ "Queen of Scots" in the central Scottish town ofĀ Stirling, and would remain queen until her forced abdication in 1567. A tragic figure, Mary would ultimately be executed in 1587 as a threat to the reign of her regal cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Mary's courage at her execution helped establish her popular image as the heroic victim in a dramatic tragedy.
To commemorate the occasion of Mary's infant coronation, we present plates fromĀ John Skeltonās 1893 workĀ Mary Stuart,Ā Skeltonās third work on Mary, Queen of Scots, all advocating for a sympathetic view of Mary as a heroic victim.Ā Mary Stuart wasĀ printed and published in an edition of 200 copies for Europe (with an additional 100Ā āwith a duplicate series of plates ⦠for Americaā) byĀ Boussod, Valadon & Co. in AsniĆØres-sur-Sein, a township in Ćle-de-France just north-west of Paris.Ā
