Never Again? From Srebrenica to Gaza: The Deafening Silence of the International Community
The weight of Srebrenica has not lifted in 30 years. As a former member of the Srebrenica Memorial Board during my time at OHR, I stood at the battery factory where over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were abandoned to executioners. Their faces remain with me. Today, Gaza bleeds in real time. The international community’s failure is not a memory—it is a recurring blueprint.
Srebrenica was preventable. Dutch peacekeepers radioed for air support as Bosnian Serb forces closed in. Their pleas to UN command in Zagreb and New York were denied. "Safe areas" became slaughter pens. Women and children were forcibly separated; men and boys were systematically killed. Three decades later, mass graves are still being found. Denial persists in Bosnia’s halls of power, where architects of genocide are celebrated as heroes.
Now Gaza screams through our screens. We watch Israeli bombs flatten homes with families inside. We see children dug from rubble, their limbs crushed. Doctors operate on the wounded without light or anesthesia. Parents search for scraps of food in debris. Over 58,000 Palestinians are confirmed dead—15,000 of them children. Nearly 400 aid workers have been killed trying to deliver flour and medicine. Famine spreads as Israel blocks food convoys. Rafah, designated a "safe zone," is now a killing field.
What chills is not just the repetition, but the world’s refusal to acknowledge what it sees. Srebrenica’s horrors emerged slowly, through survivor testimony and exhumed graves. Gaza’s genocide broadcasts live: streams of bodies, starving infants, mass graves bulldozed before investigations begin. Yet governments and media outlets dismiss the evidence. They call mass graves "staged," starved children "propaganda," and executions "military necessity." When genocide is documented minute-by-minute and still denied, truth itself is assassinated.
The machinery of failure is identical:
- In 1995, UN hierarchies vetoed air support for Dutch peacekeepers.
- In 2024, the U.S. blocks ICC warrants and UN cease-fire resolutions.
- In Bosnia, Serb forces attacked aid convoys; in Gaza, Israeli snipers kill civilians waiting for bread.
- Corporate profiteers armed the killers then, and now fuel Gaza’s destruction while Tel Aviv’s stock market surges.
We honored Srebrenica with vows of "Never Again." Yet 30 years have passed, and 58,000 Gazans are dead, and thousands of bodies remain buried under destroyed buildings, with exact figures unverified due to inaccessible areas. The same lies that enabled Bosnia’s genocide—dehumanization, false neutrality, willful blindness—now enable Palestine’s erasure. When genocide is livestreamed and still denied, we are not bystanders. We are participants in the lie.
To those in power: History records your silence. No security council veto will veto accountability forever.
