Marceline’s face had been neutral when talking about her experience with time travelers, but John’s words caused her brows to furrow, her lips frowned. “Funny thing about fate. It likes to hit back.” She said. Walking over she leaned on the table looking him square in the eyes. “I’ve been doing everything I can to change that fate. It’s not like I said, ‘oh I’m destined to be alone let me sit around and eat bonbons til my fate comes to pass.’” Marceline said.
John sat back and let her say her piece, pausing for a few beats before replying calmly. “No need to get defensive. Just giving a suggestion.” Pushing his chair back, John carried his plate to the sink and then made a move for the door. “Thank you for fishing me out of the dumpster. I best be on my way before I say something else out of line.” He then gave a little mock salute and walked out, berating himself for the brief moment of thinking he could possibly say anything about changing fate when his own was bleak and getting darker by the minute.
Marceline watched as he cleaned his plate. She gave a small wave as he left. Leaning against the table she heard the mocking voice in her head. Rubbing her temples she let out a sigh before going about her day.
