wolfbird enthusiasts i had an au idea
monty is the son of nobles and has been notorious for scaring off or ignoring his tutors. the allans are stuck in town while their travelling carriage is repaired and edgar ends up being hired to be monty’s tutor (as a last ditch attempt, hoping monty might listen to someone his age)
they go through the horrors together (edgar’s family leaving him [with an untrustworthy promise they’d be back], autistic meltdowns, some sort of assassination plot and monty being complicit in the death of his family, math) and along the way collect strays (poe, kevin, roland…) and form unshakable bonds :D
kevin is a runaway who hitched a ride on a wagon from a couple of towns over, he’s real rough and tumble and acts like he doesn’t need anyone and tells people he’s an orphan
roland is a devout little boy (yet to understand the ways that religion is weaponized against certain groups of people) and meets kevin as he’s scrounging around looking for food to steal.
roland offers to help him, takes kevin by the hand (because he has a look in his eye like he’ll bolt if he doesn’t) and takes him to see his church’s leader. now, i don’t know a lot about religion but i could see kevin being asked his god given name and refusing to answer and being slapped, roland trying to defend him and also getting hit for associating with a heathen. kevin having wanted to run off immediately but getting mad at the church leader for hurting the first person who has been kind to him and spitting in the man’s face before pulling a still in shock roland away.
somehow they end up at the finch manor, oblivious of its bloodstained halls
just remembered this au and MAOW.
maybe monty and edgar found poe as a baby? fallen out of a nest behind the post office. and they just. never gave him back because they’re meddlesome children.
and, true to canon, poe is also meddlesome and terrible and edgar tries to give him to monty a couple of times because “he doesn’t bite you” and monty always says that poe loves edgar

Poe being raised by them is so cute. Love to think that despite being a little shit Edgar and Monty are both way too attached to Poe to be that bothered by it
honestly wish we had more of the boys interacting w Poe one-on-one (but we did get Monty and Poe interactions so lowkey Wolfbird win!!)
If this were to be a fic or sm I could see Poe flying off and observing the Roland and Kevin B plots as a transition to the perspective switches 🙂↕️🙂↕️ if that makes sense

Lockstock is so good and awesome and the story is so intriguing and emotional and i’m rooting for everyone but so worried for all of them… HOWEVER
I made a huge mistake making an Oc who I ship with Cheeky shortly after ep 1 because now I keep thinking about my stupid Oc whenever anything major happens… like- [[SPOILER]]
i think edgar must’ve gotten used to going away and keeping himself busy because his dad and granddad didn’t want him pestering in their personal relationships etc. and he finds it difficult to shake the habit and will quietly slip away with a book when no one is talking to him or specifically requesting his company
the other boys discover this fairly quickly as he will mysteriously vanish and they have to look for him. they each have different strategies to make sure he knows they want him to stick around during social things
monty tends to sit next to edgar and lean into his side or have some other casual physical contact, roland always tries to encourage him to join conversations or at least ask what he thinks, and kevin (who i think is also used to being dismissed but reacts differently) will periodically wander off to do something but always comes back to hang out with edgar and try to make him laugh

as a history major i have some thoughts on jazz vampires. here they are
firstly, when are we? i would place the play in the 1930s due to ragtime being something jerry's father was into (ragtime being a genre from the 1890s to 1910s) and the mention of zoot suits (originated in the 20s but rose to greater popularity in the 40s). the play is stated to take place in louisiana. okay, so this play takes place in jim crow south. this is vital.
jazz (and ragtime actually) are both music genres that were invented by african americans. zoot suits (mentioned by sam) were also originally popular with african americans, expanding in the 40s to mexican, filipino, italian, and japanese americans. so critically, in the very first scene, the boys (especially sam) have couched this play in a black space.
then, you get to charlie. a sheriff who bans his daughter from going to a jazz club. yes he has reason in the play, but you have to think of the implications of an almost certainly white man banning his white daughter from going to a black space. especially since this play is set in the segregated south. then there is the fact that a white man (sampire) is specifically preying on black people because they taste better (which has its own extrapolations with the history of cannibalism in pre-civil war south) and all together the play has really interesting social context. also appleby is a person of color and his relationship with bella is an interracial one. i hc him as black but i can see him as anything but white
