What is your favorite liturgical season and why?
They’re going to hate me for this but it’s Ordinary Time.
Ik some people find ordinary time to really drag, but I love it. It’s the season of green and growing things. The fields are planted, it is time to wait. It’s time to wander. The sprouts are shooting up from the ground. There are fewer services and rites and rituals because you’re supposed to be finding the holy by serving at your food bank. You’re supposed to be out with the disciples and following in his footsteps.
I am also fond of advent and lent. Advent is blue in the Lutheran tradition. It gives me a gentle rhythm when I am usually feeling weary (the winter time always sees some sort of crisis from me). Lent builds me back up through the purification. I keep looking to lent as a chance to grow closer to God— each year I get weirder with my fasts. This year I gave up “saying yes without thinking about it first.”
