The Girl Who Just Wants To Learn of the Day: Meet Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year-old Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban this week on her way home from school — ”A bullet struck her head, but her brain is safe,” one of her doctors reported.
Why is the Taliban targeting her? Because she openly campaigns online and in her country for education for girls.
A Taliban spokesman says that if she survives, they’ll come for her again:
She was pro-West, she was speaking against the Taliban and she was calling President Obama her idol. She was young but she was promoting Western culture.

I made a new bulletin board in my classroom.
It took four hours. Not a single student said anything to indicate they noticed. I also dyed my roots. Twelve students noticed/commented. Either my roots were really bad or my bulletin board is really bad.
Sitting at my desk this morning. I thought I smelled something foul.
It was a sandwich. Wedged under my door; clearly left there before the weekend. Balogna. Three days old.
Become a teacher, they said. It will be fun, they said.
When the kindergarten teacher asked me if I could put together a mural for behind the kids at their kindergarten grad ceremony themed "Stone Soup", I thought "wouldn't it be charming if I could build little straw houses for each of them? Wouldn't the parents think it was so cute?" Needless to say, I've spent a lot of hours at the school, I've got straw slivers EVERYWHERE, and I'm pretty sure the custodian and I are no longer on speaking terms. Happy grad day, kinders.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." Some days I think I'm holding students under.
My weekend! HELLO END OF THE YEAR REPORT CARDS, I've been expecting you.
What country are you from? Are you British?
Canada!
Have you ever cried at work? It's an interesting article, but I think the headline is misleading.

I remember being worried about my first year and in particular what I was going to do on my first day as a teacher all alone, something like this would have been useful!
Found this on my desk. My students are hilarious.

Ok, I need advice.
Recently, the lockers in my classroom were removed. In their absence is a large space along the wall now. I originally wanted to paint the wall with idea paint (to turn it into a giant whiteboard...) but the division has told me that I am not allowed to do so. I was somewhat considering buying a couch and some little bean bag chairs to put in the space for a reading corner (reading...wall?), but I have some reservations about that. Here are my thoughts:
Pro's:
Students might love the reading space
It will fill the space that is rather unsightly now
My classroom will be the cool classroom
Cons:
I will have to pay for the furniture with my own money (probably)
The space may become distracting
My classroom will be the cool classroom.
Ideas? What do you think??
Ms. Herrick, I've enver cried at a funeral. Not even the really sad ones. Is something wrong with me? -Adorable, very serious, student today.
