Since 2014, the intake for MA Material Futures grew from just 16 to 32 students. With the exception of 5 drop outs in 2015, we’re now a cohort of 27 strong designers - the biggest number since the course started in 2001. This year, we’ve taken the driver’s seat to promote our course as an initiative to raise awareness and engage the public in the increasingly important themes of climate change, renewable resources, systems change and digital citizenship.  We are aiming to raise over £6000 to get our work out and in front of the dynamic audiences of London and Milan. Any contribution at all is appreciated and each will receive a token of appreciation by way of thank you! Brief: How can permaculture and/or synthetic biology shape the future of sustainability? Context: You are the next generation of designers that can actively contribute to the shaping of a more sustainable world. By now you should be fairly familiar with current sustainable design strategies, but this project will introduce you to alternative fields which are both on a tangent, and at opposite ends of the sustainable spectrum. This project is designed to encourage you to explore alternative sustainable futures informed by permaculture and/or synthetic biology.

This brief asks you to consider what is the future of materiality in the context of ever more pervasive digital technologies. As our lifestyles become increasingly connected and ‘always on’, we want you to explore how a digital age is impacting our understanding of, relationship to, and interactions with materiality.
