I honestly moved away mostly for my own safety and because I wanted a brighter future with more opportunities. Looking back, it was a fairly unplanned decision, and while I don't regret it, I would definitely recommend being more prepared than I was.

Moving to a new place is exciting, but it's also a very serious step. If you're considering it, try to save enough money to support yourself for at least the first few months. Finding a job often takes longer than people expect, and having a financial cushion can make a huge difference when things don't go according to plan!

I'd also recommend researching practical things in advance - housing, healthcare, transportation, banking, visa requirements if applicable, and the job market. The more information you have before you arrive, the less overwhelming those first weeks will feel.

When packing, don't focus only on clothes and things that look nice. Bring the essentials you'll actually need for everyday life. Think about documents, medications, chargers, important contacts, and other practical items that are difficult or expensive to replace.

And perhaps the thing nobody prepared me for: homesickness. Even if you're excited to leave, there will probably be moments when you miss familiar places, routines, and people. Pack things that make you feel connected to home - a favorite sweater, photographs, letters, small gifts, or anything that brings you comfort. Those little things can mean a lot when you're having a difficult day.

Most importantly, remember that feeling scared doesn't mean you're making the wrong decision. Moving away teaches you independence very quickly. You'll make mistakes, you'll have moments where you wonder what on earth you're doing, and then one day you'll realize you've built a life for yourself in a place that once felt completely unfamiliar.

It's difficult, but it can also be one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. 🖤
