side note: i’m super happy to read many people still interested in analyzing scenes from season 1, it’s my beloved (yes, i loved season 2 too) and deserves to always be praised.

This is such a meaningful and sad scene, not only because their last kiss 'before the disaster' takes place, but there's like a promise made between them through their words, simon initiating the kiss and wille reciprocating with a hug.

a promise that shortly after will be broken.

Words don’t count as much as actions, but when they’re the one thing someone could hold on to for hoping in a better and happier future with the person you love - then they count.

It was fair for wille to talk if he truly believed his words - reminder he actually stuck to them at first and give it a try by confronting his mother during the car ride to the palace - but simon had every right to be upset and dissapointed at what his official statement ended up being instead.

Here they are both scared of the consequences, they search for strength and comfort in the other’s arms, at least until wille jumps up out of anxiety, simon can’t help but notice it and their fragile bubble bursts. it’s a come back to reality and the real world is their biggest enemy at this time, they have all the reasons for not wanting to face it, if not together, and to be afraid.
