charlie's spirits were high, higher than they had been in a long time. not only were things looking up, with the last of the attacks getting further and further away from them, but summer was finally upon them, and summer was easily charlie's favorite time of the year. charlie was a bright and bubbly person; he loved excitement, adventure, and convincing his friends to agree to his plans of - harmless - mischief; all of those things were more achievable in summer, charlie typically found. the hot and generally fun-filled months finally being upon them was reason for great joy for charlie, though admittedly, one person in shrike heights had helped to pull that joy out of him for even longer than what the summer had lasted for so far.
reina, to charlie, felt like summer if it were a person. she radiated the same bright feelings of excitement, making charlie feel like he was a child once again, a child who was thrilled to be free from the gruelling school work and boring routine that he was subjected to for the rest of the year. her enthusiasm was a breath of fresh summer air, and for them to have connected as beautifully and as naturally as they had made charlie feel lucky, to say the very least. every day that their paths crossed felt like the peak of the most perfect summer, and for it to actually be that time of the year again only made it all the more better.
he was always excited to see reina, and it was no different as he spotted her out there by the lake. there was an added skip to his step as he closed the distance between them, and to hear her voice greeting him with such enthusiasm made his large grin double in smile. "howdy!" he greeted. "oh my god, for real?" the pitch of his voice shifted upwards with the very real excitement he felt. it wasn't often that he met somebody who agreed with his ideas and actually went through with making them a reality. "you are incredible- honest, and if i knew any stronger words i'd be using them, too," he laughed as he took the paper from her. "don't even worry about it, it just adds character," he dismissed the stains, but not before he felt his heart skip a beat over her honesty about why the tea ended up on the page. he tried to not think too far into it, trying to instead focus on her work - work that was growing his excitement to a level more intense than he had ever felt before, he thought.
โโ reina liked to think she was an exceptionally adaptable person. she thrived in any season, but admittedly, summer was her time where she could shine the brightest, closely followed by spring. she valued the colder months and the room for relaxation and contemplation they allowed as she was normally snowed-in somewhere thanks to the mountains of snow that accumulated over the course of just a few days in the wintertime. digressing, summer was when she dedicated most of her time to creativity and innovation, which is why she was so well-equipped for the task she set out to do for charlie. it helped that he was a favorable person in general and they got along splendidly, unlike anyone else she'd ever met outside the commune, really.
it was a real life miracle, meeting someone that complimented her so well even after enduring all of the horrors that had wreaked havoc upon shrike the last few years. she would never stop being grateful for the blessing that was their friendship. while she did believe that opposites attract, in their small town it was more sacred when similar people found one another and could reflect their feelings off the other and feel perfectly understood. she never had to worry if she was putting in too much effort or acting too sunny for charlie, because he would always mirror her enthusiasm and make her feel a little less like a stranger in the secular world around them.
"for real. i got a melody stuck in my head and it just poured out, but i did my best to make it not sound like word vomit," she laughed blithely and adjusted the strap of her guitar on her shoulder so some of the weight would be distributed evenly across her shoulders. a blush appeared on the apples of her cheeks as she was complimented, having grown up a humble spirit that never expected too much praise. she was just glad he liked it. "you're too sweet. i was thinking we make it a duet, though i'm not as good at performing as you are. and the chorus may be a bit wordy but just tell me if it's too much and i'll fix it. i even brought my fountain pen!"
The longer that Leo was here, the more comfortable he became, though he still felt a little out of place. He wasnโt used to spending so much time with people he didnโt know, especially in their own home, and it almost felt like he was somewhere he didnโt belong. But that wasnโt true, and he knew it, though maybe his brain hadnโt quite comprehended that. Really he thought it might have something to do with the fact that he didnโt feel fully comfortable not being good at something musical. The only time heโd ever really had a teacher was for piano, and even then, there had eventually been little that they could actually teach him; after awhile, it had been just about honing his skills and perfecting his craft. In fact, Leo had given piano lessons before leaving for college and during both for the extra money and because he truly enjoyed it, though heโd stopped all that when he had his accident. Now the roles were reversed, and it felt a little strange.ย
Get out of your head, idiot,ย Leo told himself. Reina clearly wasnโt the type of musician who acted superior to those who didnโt know how to play their selected instrument (and Leo had met a lot of people like that), and he knew she wasnโt going to judge him for how little he knew. Looking around, he commented, โYour place is so different than mine. ย Iโm an only child, and a lot of the decor in the house I grew up in was sort ofโฆethnic, I guess the word is since my family is from Egypt. I was even born there.โ His parents had moved out of Shrike Heights before the killings started (which Leo was thankful for), and theyโd sold their house. How Leo lived in an apartment with minimal personal touches. โMy place now is sort ofโฆSpartan,โ he laughed, adding, โlike my name I guess.โ Realizing Reina might not know what he meant, he clarified, โLeo is short of Leonidas.โ At Reinaโs suggestion, Leo nodded. โThat sounds alright,โ he agreed, โjustโฆplease be patient with me.โ He was feeling pretty insecure, though he kept telling himself to relax. โI sing a bit,โ Leo replied, โso Iโm okay with that. But Iโm definitely not going to make a career out of it.โ Although Leo laughed, he felt a little sad too because at one point, heย wasย going to make a career out of being a pianist. But he didnโt want to think about that now.ย
โโ she always thought she was particularly intuitive โ which was a taught trait rather than something she was naturally gifted at. so she made the conscious effort of pulling back the drapes so more sunlight would pour into the room and make it seem like there was even more space for them to enjoy during their lesson. the last thing she wanted was for leo to feel uncomfortable in a home she built for everyone to enjoy, after all. she had received numerous compliments on it on separate occasions, but that didn't mean she would ever stop innovating to try and find new ways to open up the area and invite more warmth into an already comfy abode.
"egypt? wow. i don't think i've ever met someone from that far away before," reina said with widened mocha hues. she had been kept insulated from birth, never having left the state since she was born, mostly because she never harbored a desire to. she was content where the universe had placed her, even in spite of all the horror that struck her hometown. "spartan. leonidas. i love it. you just ooze coolness, don't you?" her laugh was light and silvery as she released the pegs and moved to adjust her fingertips on the correct strings so she would strum the right chords for the song. "you never know. you could walk out of here with an all new kind of confidence." she tried to enthuse.
As he looked around Reina's place, Leo got such a different vibe than his own, which wasn't a bad thing. He could tell that there was life here, that she was with people she cared about frequently, that the overall feeling of this place was bright and sunny. It actually reminded him a bit of her flier, albeit not so garish. Leo smiled at the thought in spite of himself, thinking about how different it was from his place. Now that his parents had left Shrike, spending half of their time back in Egypt and the other half in Florida, pretty much the only person Leo had over who actually meant something to him was Akito, and most of the time his apartment felt like it was withering away, while Reina's felt like it was blooming. He felt, well, a little jealous then, but he knew this was all on him, on his cold demeanor and general feeling of apathy. You really need to change that, Leo thought, though wasn't that what he was trying to do now? Even the Leo of a month ago wouldn't have responded to that flier, and now here he was in a stranger's home - a stranger who seemed to be a perky young girl at that - and trying to be a normal person for a change. So maybe he shouldn't beat himself up too much, at least not right now. Looking around again, Leo stated, "You...you have a really nice place here," which was difficult for him to say not because it wasn't true (it was) but because he wasn't used to being warm.
Settling into the living room, Leo put his guitar strap over his shoulder, his guitar resting on his lap as he plucked at the strings, making sure he didn't need to tighten them or anything before they got started. "I like a lot of things," Leo replied, thinking this wasn't an easy question to answer. "Really I'm a classical music guy," he revealed, "though when it comes to guitar, I guess I'm sort of interested in playing more...folksy stuff. Like soft rock maybe? I'm not sure how to describe it." Hopefully Reina understood. Surprised at her offer of tea, Leo replied, "Uh...whatever is easiest." He wasn't really familiar with tea or the different kinds, so he honestly didn't know which kind he'd prefer. "I basically know the chords, but that's about as far as I've gotten. I can play simple songs too, but...slowly."
โโ reina was proud of the home she had made for herself, both in the commune and in the heart of shrike. she had put all of her love into decorating both places, but her home on the commune had been lived in for longer and appeared more lived in. there was the handcrafted windchime on the porch that made beautiful music, a sunflower wreath hung on her front door, and on the inside a plethora of haphazardly placed books and trinkets that couldn't fit on her shelves filled with art projects she'd kept throughout the years that she received from all her siblings. it was sort of a monument of her growth, now that she thought about it, and she was proud to host people whenever they decided to pay her a visit. "thank you, my brothers and sisters helped me decorate." she chuckled. "as if it isn't obvious enough." there were even crayon drawings on the wallpaper from where her younger siblings made quick work of leaving a piece of them behind.
"soft rock. i dig it," she grinned widely as she returned to the couch, offering him a cup of chamomile tea since the box was the nearest and crossing her legs comfortably. "slowly. we can work with that. how about we start with some pink floyd? wish you were here is a crowd favorite, i've found." she sipped her tea languidly before setting it aside and reaching for her own guitar, painted flowers and ivies decorating the body and encroaching the neck. "do you sing much, or do you just prefer playing?" she wondered as she began tuning her guitar carefully.

Now you need you be your best behavior, Leo told himself as he stood on the front porch of the house, waiting for Reina to answer. He kept thinking of the colorful flier and Reina's perkiness on the phone, and he kept telling himself that neither of those things were bad. Even before the accident, Leo hadn't exactly been Mr. Sunshine, but he hadn't had to psyche himself up and warn himself to behave. It was like now that Leo was so unhappy with his life, reminders that other people actually were just felt painful, but that wasn't their fault, and Leo genuinely didn't begrudge others of their happiness. He just wished he was too. I wish I'd never gone on that camping trip, he thought, though immediately Leo told himself to stop; he couldn't go down that rabbit hole now. So he took a deep breath and managed a soft smile when Reina opened the door. "Hey Reina," Leo replied quietly, holding his hand up in a wave. "Thanks for having me."
Walking into the house, Leo looked around, again wondering how he'd fare with life on the commune. He knew from hanging out (and getting high) with other commune members that they didn't have the same kind of modern luxuries, but it seemed like a pretty standard house. "So I'm still pretty new to this," Leo admitted, unstrapping his guitar case, "like not quite a beginner, but something close. I've been trying to teach myself. Usually I pick up instruments pretty easily, and I guess I did for the guitar too, but only the basics. So I guess I'm hoping you can help me get to the next level." Looking around, Leo asked, "Where should we do this? Living room?"
โโ kicking aside some toys that her younger siblings left strewn about the floor, reina made ample space for leo to get comfortable in her home on the commune. she always considered herself fortunate enough to be able to have a home away from home โ that being her cabin, of course, as now she'd been determined to make her apartment in town her main place of rest. no more running away or getting scared of things that weren't in her control. she was going to stick around for as long as she possibly could, and then some. she knew there was no use in living in fear. her fellow residents certainly didn't seem to think so. and she was given lots of advice during her break from town and the mall by her grandmother; like how hiding from what scares you won't make it disappear. it'll make you disappear. that really resonated with reina, which is what ultimately inspired her to put up the flier so she could help others heal through the ultimate medicine: music.
her home was well lived in and decorated accordingly, but it wasn't an eye sore, at least that's what she thought. the one thing that attracted the most light had been her glass windchimes on the front porch, which dangled and emitted beautiful notes whenever there was a breeze. "living room works," she said as she closed the door behind him before hurrying toward the kitchen. "sit down where you like! you can just show me where you're at and we'll work our way up from there. what kind of music are you interested in? oh, and what tea would you rather, chamomile or lavender?"
Ian didn't often shop at the mall. He was usually in and out after his shift and didn't spend much time in any of the stores outside of the grocer if he did. Today was different however. More often than not him and his partner scheduled their shifts to start and end at the same time so they could be in and out of the mall together but their schedules hadn't lined up perfectly and Ian had time to kill while he waited for Bo to be off. Ian found himself wandering into The Black Cat in hopes of potentially running into Edward and pick up a couple of incense while he was there. Unfortunately when he arrived he didn't see Edward that day and was instead greeted by someone else. At the question Ian instantly shook his head. He'd been raised to detest any and all "witchcraft" as a kid and while his grandma's influence hadn't stuck with him he still had his reservations about this sort of stuff. "Oh, uhhh, no thanks. I don't really believe in all that kind of stuff," he explained getting ready to part ways with them to check out the selection of incense he'd come in for.
โโ drew gave an eye roll in response, flicking through the cards and getting glimpses of each one and what it may have foretold for the young customer. they knew next to nothing about tarot โ but they had a handy guide that came packaged with the deck which they could refer to whenever they needed guidance. "c'mon. you don't have to believe in it to partake." they mused. they knew some people had a natural aversion to things of the unnatural variety, but it was the fucking black cat, what else would you be in there for? then, they saw the incense, and it became increasingly clear to them that the stranger was probably even less likely to take them up on their boredom-filled offer. "you won't even have to get the ice cream. that is to say if you get a good reading. you never know with these things."
๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: the black cat ๐๐ฏ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: open @shrikestart
โโ it was technically drew's time off, but they liked the atmosphere that their work had, and they hadn't really made too many friends to justify going out โ so sometimes they would come in and sit behind the counter, entertaining whoever was on the shift after theirs. other times, when they were especially bored, they would grab one of the tarot decks from the shelves and give impromptu readings that made absolutely no sense. but customers seemed to like it enough. it was on the house, they said, as if they had the right to charge for services they offered without having any expertise whatsoever. "hey, want a reading?" they decided to ask upon seeing a face in their peripheral, fanning out the cards and offering an impish grin. it was an older deck, released seven or so years prior, but it was still stunning. "free of charge. unless you're keen on buying me some ice cream if it goes well."
Leo had to admit that this was going better than he had thought it would. Based on the flier, he had been expecting the human embodiment of an exclamation point, but the girl seemed much...well, less, which was a good thing. You need to stop being such a dick, Leo told himself. He hated how bitter his thoughts were these days since he'd never been like that before the accident, but it was like he couldn't turn that side of himself off anymore. So he resolved to make more of an effort with Reina now, even if she eventually became more...animated. He might not be successful, but Leo was going to try. "Okay, cool," Leo replied. "I could make that work." He was surprised about this being at the commune, but he'd always gotten along with the members. They were pretty low-key and easy going, and they always had the best pot too, so he could vibe with Reina being a member. "My name is Leo Kaur," he answered, assuming Reina was writing down his name in an appointment book or somewhere at least, and he said, "I can come tomorrow if you want." Tomorrow was Thursday, and Leo was ready to hit the ground running with these lessons. He wanted so badly to get better, which was why he'd not let the sight of the blindingly colorful flier deter him. They made plans for a time.
The next day, Leo drove to the outskirts of town, where the commune was located. As he made his way through the fields and farmland to the house Reina had indicated, he looked around, wondering if he'd ever be happy with this way of life. He was used to more modern conveniences, but he didn't think he'd ever met a commune person who was unhappy; maybe they had figured out the key to contentment, and maybe Leo could learn something from them. As he arrived at Reina's house, Leo parked and got out of his car, walking to the door and knocking, his guitar strapped to his back in its case.
โโ she could understand that some may have been put off by the manner of which she chose to advertise, but it seemed to be paying off โ it even reached people that weren't in her demographic to begin with. that had to be a good sign. although she'd never dream of quitting her work at stitch by stitch, she considered guitar lessons a fun and proactive side hustle that could help her make rent by the end of the month rather than running back to the commune whenever her electricity was shut off. "leo kaur, okay," she repeated as she wrote down the name on a piece of yellow paper. "tomorrow works perfectly." she was genuinely excited for their lesson, as she always was, thoroughly enjoying teaching whoever she could everything she knew about something she loved.
tomorrow arrived, and reina dressed herself for the occasion: a pair of overalls painted on by her younger siblings and a shirt that read MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR '69. she couldn't remember where she got it. maybe it was a hand-me-down from one of her mothers. regardless, it was what she considered the least affronting outfit she could've assembled. despite her background in the commune and her affinity for the color pink, she wanted to remain semi-professional whenever she could. once she heard a knock at the door, she hurriedly took the whistling kettle off the stove and walked to answer it. "leo!" she exclaimed with a bright smile. "i was just about to make some tea. come in, please," she opened the door wider to invite him in.

๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: lake love, late afternoon ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ: @takemecn โโ after finishing an eight hour shift at stitch by stitch, reina stopped by her apartment briefly so she could feed her beloved parakeets and pick up her yamaha western acoustic guitar โ her most prized possession, just behind her inherited sewing machine that had a room of its own in her space. she was thrilled that it was no longer collecting dust in the corner of her bedroom, now serving a greater purpose as she had begun writing again. albeit, she only had the time while on lunch breaks or when business was especially slow in the middle of the week, but she treasured the time she was given nonetheless. she had come up with at least a dozen new songs ever since returning from her long-term stay in the commune, having spent most of her time there on a well-deserved rest following the attacks that occurred in january. needless to say she was glad to be back, and she was especially excited to see a friend and fellow creative soul. hurrying down to the shoreline, she kicked off her sandals and trotted up the boardwalk with her guitar case slung on her back and a smile written on her features. love lake was one of her favorite places in shrike, and, she found, was less intimidating to suggest as a hang out spot rather than the commune. plus it was gorgeous closing in on sunset. "charlie!" she exclaimed as if it were some grand reunion, which it was, sort of, as eight hours seemed to drag along whenever she had something as exhilarating as a musical to dedicate time to instead. "you won't believe this. i spent three hours perfecting a song last night. here," she handed over the neatly folded paper. "oh, don't mind the stain, i spilled my tea when you called to meet me." was that an embarrassing confession? reina didn't seem to pay any mind to it, simply excited that she had arrived on time โ as if she were anything less than punctual in the first place. just because she fit the conventional mold of a hippie didn't mean she couldn't respect other's time.

Ugh. That was what Leo was thinking as he looked at the flier pinned to the bulletin board at The Blue Sparrow. It was colorful to the point of garishness, and there were too many exclamation points for his liking; he could already tell that this 'Reina' person was going to bubbly and cheerful, and he was already feeling exhausted just thinking about it. But this was the only flier that advertised guitar lessons, and Leo needed them because teach himself wasn't going as well as he would have hoped. While he knew the basic chords, he felt sort of stuck now, and he knew he'd need more than a book, even with his musical aptitude (he generally picked up the basics of various instruments relatively easily). For a moment, Leo looked around the board to make sure there weren't any other fliers hidden underneath others, perhaps one advertising guitar that didn't look like a box of crayons had thrown up on it, but this was all there was. So Leo took a pen out of his pocket and jotted the number down on his hand with a sigh.
The next morning, Leo sprang awake suddenly, not sure for a moment where he was. Then he realized he'd fallen asleep at the table in his apartment, half of a beer nearby. As he reached for it to throw it out, Leo noticed the writing on his hand, and he groaned because he realized it was smudged. He could barely make it out now, but he thought he could just make out the number. So he walked over to his phone in the kitchen and dialed, holding the receiver with his shoulder while he tried to open a bottle of Tylenol at the same time. When someone answered, Leo asked, "Yeah, is this..." He paused, trailing off as he tried to read the smudged name he'd written on his hand. "Is this, um, Rina?" Leo wondered. "I think it's Rina at least?" And then suddenly he remembered, exclaiming, "Reina! That's it. Is this Reina?" He knew he was not coming off well in this conversation with the stranger, especially since he had yet to mention what he was calling about, so Leo quickly explained, "I saw your flier about the guitar lessons and was wondering, uh...if you were still accepting new students."
โโ reina had spent the better part of an afternoon constructing her colorful and garish flyer for the townspeople of shrike to behold. she had been meaning to offer guitar lessons for months, but between work and returning to live at the commune since the attacks she wasn't able to fully dedicate herself to something like that. she mainly had the demographic of mothers and children in mind, however she wasn't opposed to teaching a person of any age. it was the effort that counted the most โ and the bravery to reach out and rip off a piece of bright pink construction paper to read her given landline number. really, it was expertly crafted to attract people she already knew she may get along well with, which is why the prospect of teaching excited her rather than had her adrenaline pumping for when the next slaughter would occur. she would do anything to take that off her mind, if even for half of a day.
reina! that's it. this is reina? she was in the middle of assembling a bowl of overnight oats whenever she received the call, her phone jittering on the hook until she plucked it off and held it up to her ear. "yes, this is she," she said, mixing the oats in with some fresh berries as the other explained the reason for their call. her features immediately lit up and she froze for a moment, silently squealing to herself before she answered. "of course i am. i teach on tuesdays and thursdays in the commune. what's your name?" she inquired as she quickly reached into one of her junk drawers and began scrambling around to find a notebook so she could jot their information down.
Noah had complicated feelings towards Seth. On the one hand, he wanted to tie his laces together and trip him for what he'd done to Eilonwy when he'd left. He had to remind himself that it hadn't been out of malice. Noah knew maybe better than most, what it was like when a way out of Shrike had opened and one had to take it. Ultimately, Seth wasn't a bad person, quite the opposite in fact. He was pretty cool! Nobody was perfect, after all, and Noah had grown enough as a person to know there were two sides to every story that were worth hearing. When he'd first learned that he and Eilonwy had gotten together, he'd been really happy for them and he'd been hoping to get to know him a little better. Now that Seth was back, it surprised him to know that the other wanted to hang out given all that had happened, but Noah didn't hesitate to meet up out of curiosity and a quiet little hope that there was a chance that broken fences could be mended.
"I know, dear. I wouldn't be a proper heart-breaker if I didn't know how to steal a man's heart completely first," he said jokingly, grinning as he found them a spot to sit down and take a load off. "Listen, I'm not gonna lie, I'll watch those soaps with my grandma, but when it's this nice out?! It's hard to justify staying at home," he said with a little laugh. After ordering a few drinks, Noah smiled at Seth. "You know... I know that things haven't exactly been easy. But I'm glad to see you back," he said with a little nod. "How are you? I mean, like... how are you really."
โโ seth knew things had changed between them. how couldn't they have? one minute he was dating noah's best friend, the next he was packing his bags and booking a one way flight to new york state. as many friends as he had to lean on while they were broken up, he was sure eilonwy had just as many, which meant he had to make it up to a lot more people so he would be in good graces with them. if this had happened any sooner in his life, he wouldn't have cared about the opinion of his ex's friends โ but this was entirely different, as he had matured from that contrary bastard he mostly was throughout high school and during college. now, all he wanted was the approval of people like noah so he knew he made the right decision coming back at all.
"my ma used to make me watch them relentlessly. i know way too much about luke and laura," seth let out a chuckle as they ordered their drinks. that was one thing about all this: noah's presence made any environment comfortable. at least, in his opinion. he just exuded a similar kind of energy to his ex that made wherever they were instantly more tolerable for him. "i'm glad to be back. really. when i was younger i never thought i'd say that," he grinned halfheartedly before worrying on his lower lip. "... i'm okay. in therapy, which is... new. but it's helping, i think. what about you, anyway? i feel like i need a total fill-in on what's been going on."
what does reina really think of the mall?
she has mixed feelings. on one hand, it's helped her branch out and bloom into a more confident version of herself, and on the other it's been the source of so much bloodshed and horror that she never thought anyone could be capable of when she still lived in the commune. but she's thankful, at the very least, that she's had the chance to work there and meet people she never would've met otherwise.
what was junko's first impression of shrike heights?
it was much quieter than sapporo, that was for certain. and more isolated. it was cozier, but maybe that was just because of their past experiences back in japan. they liked that everything was within walking distance, although they were never seen without their adoptive mother or father alongside them. and most of all they liked the scenery โ despite all the horror that's occurred, it remained a beautiful place throughout it all.

what does seth love the most about shrike heights?
eilowny. probably the people. with so much chaos and destruction and fear and horror that plagues his hometown, one thing that's never changed has been the perseverance of those who live here. it's been inspiring, especially coming back after an attack and being met with grace and kindness.
what is reina's favorite thing about herself?
โโ despite being put down plenty for her lack of social awareness and intellect, reina has always thought she was a very good sister, which is the most important thing she thinks she'll be any time soon. she learned about all things homesteading so she could better take care of her family. even now she's very dedicated to their wellbeing and visits as often as she can to help around the commune.
