I think about Neil being portrayed as depressed in au where we doesnāt dies is cool and stuff however I donāt think Neil is depressed in the movie. Neil had zest(y) for life and I genuinely do think that his father killed him. The day that he lost his freedom he lost his soul and the memories he couldāve had and what is a human without memoriesā¦ I think that showing him as someone who wouldāve been depressed regardless of if his father had sentenced him to prison school sort of takes away from the impact of the ending. HOWEVER I DO REALLY LIKE SEEING MENTAL HEALTH REP AND THIS IS NOT A DISS TO PEOPLE WHO LIKE MAKING THEIR CHARACTERS SAD ASF BECAUSE I LIKE READING THAT TO PLEASE KEEP WRITING GUYS
I wholeheartedly agree. This is a take I usually don't share because I'm scared people will throw tomatoes at me, but I don't think Neil was depressedā His suicide was purely the result of his circumstances. His parents failed him, his school failed him, he WASN'T DOOMED FROM THE START!!

I like to think somewhere in the future, when Todd finally gets his first poetry book printed and out in the world, he would contact Mr Keating and send him a copy, alongside a small note directed to 'my captain' explaining that if those words where now printed it was in no small part because of him. He wouldn't be trusting the chances of him stumbling over it in a bookshop, it is something too important to trust on luck. I also think that, even already having a copy, Mr Keating would track a bookshop that sold it and buy another one, just to support Todd.

Itās about the effect that Keating had on all of his students, getting them to think for themselves.
Getting Neil to follow his dreams, giving Todd the confidence and the space to speak up, validating Charlie for not wanting to follow the rules all the time, encouraging Knox to follow his heart, letting Meeks, Pitts, and Cameron ā and everyone else in that class ā have a space where they could have fun instead of just studying for the future.
Itās about the effect that that the school and Mr. Nolan and all of the other teachers have on the students. Itās the rigidity that these children take into their lives when they should feel free to enjoy their time.
Itās about the effect of these boysā parents on their lives. How they are so terrified of stepping outside of the box, of moving outside of the clean-cut lines of a life they didnāt plan for themselves. Not standing up for what they know or what they want. Giving up their dreams and aspirations and little moments of joy to appease to people who are trying to shape individuals with minds of their own into their own idea of a perfect person. Bearing down on them until the feel like theyāre suffocating in the tiny space theyāre trapped in.
Itās about the effect Neil had. Itās about what friendship can do. Itās about what happens when you lose someone so good.
How Todd only knew him for a couple months and he had such a positive effect on his life. Had him open up and brought him in.
Itās about him starting the dead poets society up again. Itās him finding Keatingās old yearbook, taking the leap to call out to him in the yard, leading them to the cave, convincing them all to join, giving Todd a place there.
Itās about him changing everyoneās lives for the better. About being such a great friend and person. Someone who took to do something they loved and did, with such passion and excitement.
Itās about how when he died, these boys grieved so much more than they should have ever had to lose. Itās about how when the effect of others leaves you feeling so very small in your own life, you donāt want to live it anymore.
Itās about a boy who killed himself because of the effects of people who wanted to stifle him. Who wanted him to be anyone other than himself. Pursue something that wasnāt what he loved.
