I like to think somewhere in the future, when Todd finally gets his first poetry book printed and out in the world, he would contact Mr Keating and send him a copy, alongside a small note directed to 'my captain' explaining that if those words where now printed it was in no small part because of him. He wouldn't be trusting the chances of him stumbling over it in a bookshop, it is something too important to trust on luck. I also think that, even already having a copy, Mr Keating would track a bookshop that sold it and buy another one, just to support Todd.

It’s about the effect that Keating had on all of his students, getting them to think for themselves.
Getting Neil to follow his dreams, giving Todd the confidence and the space to speak up, validating Charlie for not wanting to follow the rules all the time, encouraging Knox to follow his heart, letting Meeks, Pitts, and Cameron — and everyone else in that class — have a space where they could have fun instead of just studying for the future.
It’s about the effect that that the school and Mr. Nolan and all of the other teachers have on the students. It’s the rigidity that these children take into their lives when they should feel free to enjoy their time.
It’s about the effect of these boys’ parents on their lives. How they are so terrified of stepping outside of the box, of moving outside of the clean-cut lines of a life they didn’t plan for themselves. Not standing up for what they know or what they want. Giving up their dreams and aspirations and little moments of joy to appease to people who are trying to shape individuals with minds of their own into their own idea of a perfect person. Bearing down on them until the feel like they’re suffocating in the tiny space they’re trapped in.
It’s about the effect Neil had. It’s about what friendship can do. It’s about what happens when you lose someone so good.
How Todd only knew him for a couple months and he had such a positive effect on his life. Had him open up and brought him in.
It’s about him starting the dead poets society up again. It’s him finding Keating’s old yearbook, taking the leap to call out to him in the yard, leading them to the cave, convincing them all to join, giving Todd a place there.
It’s about him changing everyone’s lives for the better. About being such a great friend and person. Someone who took to do something they loved and did, with such passion and excitement.
It’s about how when he died, these boys grieved so much more than they should have ever had to lose. It’s about how when the effect of others leaves you feeling so very small in your own life, you don’t want to live it anymore.
It’s about a boy who killed himself because of the effects of people who wanted to stifle him. Who wanted him to be anyone other than himself. Pursue something that wasn’t what he loved. Take away any form of choice from him. Snuff out his light in the darkness of “should” and “must” and “need to or else you’ll make it no where”
It’s about the light that was ripped out of this world, and how his friends sobbed and screamed and fought and stood up for what they knew because it was something they could do and he would never get to again.
Charlie Dalton memorized She Walks in Beauty by Byron and recited it perfectly to the girls, as well as Shakespeare's sonnet 18, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" Memorized! Verbatim! And even without girls to impress, Charlie picked the "Teach me to love? Go teach thyself more wit!" portion of The Prophet by Abraham Cowley to read to his friends!
The boy loved romantic literature and you can't convince me otherwise. He likes romantic poetry and saxophones and he takes care of Todd in that snow scene and he is way softer and gentler and kinder than he makes himself appear and I love him so much 🥹 I love my stupid idiot son 💙
I’ll make an actual post about this at some point but hair in terms of control and social groups in media is so important to me because you see it in swing kids where long hair shows being against the Nazis and being a free thinker, outside of the norm- it’s an identity to have long and unruly hair, not just a style, it’s something that sets you apart from the rest and separates you from the crowd. It’s a symbol of youthfulness and rebellion. Once they get caught and they get sent to join the soldiers, their hair is clipped short and smart, there’s no personality and no freedom- they look just like everyone else. hair that once flowed through the wind wildly is now gelled back and unable to move, like how the young boys were forced into these positions in war and how they were trapped, at fear of death for disobeying. In films like grease and the outsiders, having this style of long, greased, slick backed hair is what makes you part of the group, it’s what separates you from the rest who arent apart of the gang. It’s also an identity, but the meaning has changed. It’s less about being against something and more about being a part of something- part of something Bigger. In the outsiders when pony and Johnny have to flee, one of the first things that they do is change their hair. They give up on this huge part of their identity and basically their family, what they’ve always known, how they were raised to be for their survival, something that they wouldn’t even have to do if the gangs weren’t a thing and there were no different groups that were distinguishable by their hair. If society wasn’t so split and so controlled, they wouldn’t have had to cut their hair, and this also goes for real life, aswell, and I’m not talking about hair styles.
